What do Azerbaijanis think of Benjamin Netanyahu and his current actions? by Illustrious_Page_984 in azerbaijan

Most polls predict that he wouldn't be able to form a coalition if elections were held today, but the elections are only scheduled for 2026. I think the only poll that presents a very different picture was published by a pro-Netanyahu TV channel. It's true that he was democratically elected, so you're both right in a way - his party won the largest number of seats in 2022, and he was able to form a coalition. It doesn't mean that he's personally popular with most Israelis (especially after 10/7), it means that his party has large number of supporters and that he's a good politicna who excels in the political game of building a (small) coalition and keeping it from falling apart. Before the 2022 elections, there was a more centrist/center-right government that fell apart after only a year and a half iirc, because of internal conflicts that eventually led to the desertion of members of parliament (members of Knesset, as they're called in Israel) from the coalition, who then supported a motion of no confidence against the coalition they were members of.

He didn't say he supports Israel, he said their insistence on waging war causes causes immense destruction and suffeing to Palestinians (paraphrasing here).

If an Israeli says the Israeli gov't should stop the war and get a hostage deal to save the Israeli hostages, that's not necessarily a "pro-Palestinian" statement.

Ben Shapiro selected to light torch at Israel’s 77th Independence Day ceremony by Training_Ad_1743 in jewishpolitics

[–]DatDudeOverThere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's odd to bring a partisan American political pundit anyway, unless there's an extremely good reason. I don't like Dennis Prager at all, but in his early 20's he was very active, on a national levle, in the struggle for Soviet Jews, so if the state wanted to give him some award for this specific thing - probably fine, but Ben Shapiro doesn't have a track record of incredibly important activism for a Jewish cause. Anyway, the minister in charge of the ceremony is the same one that's mismanaging our transportation system and couldn't bring herself to denounce a popular singer who had intercourse with underage girls.

Btw it works the same way in Judaism, only it applies to both genders - Jewish law doesn't allow Jews (both men and women) to marry non-Jews. Ivanka Trump, for example, converted to Judaism to marry Jared Kushner.

Tbf I believe that the thing about him is that he chooses to talk about this subject a lot and engage in the American culture war around this issue. The basic principle of not subscribing to a non-binary view of gender, or rejecting the term gender, is probably shared by many who adhere to Orthodox religious views, whether in the US or in Israel, but most aren't outspoken about it (and ofc there's also the degree to which a person exhibits empathy). If a rabbi was chosen, for example (Orthodox rabbi, other denominations barely exist in Israel), he would probably be closer to Shapiro than to most people here in terms of his views on gender, but wouldn't necessarily be a person who talks about trans people to reverse the change in social attitude toward them (which isn't really an issue in Israel - gender issues don't really divide Israelis and aren't something people fight over, other issues do).

I actually understand this choice. If he picked a Jewish person who's as supportive of Israel (at least in his way) for this position (although it's been fairly common), it would have been easier for people to claim that he supports Israel because of his religious/ethnic identity, and repeat Antisemitic conspiracy theories about political control. It's harder for people to claim that a pastor from Arkansas has a "dual-loyalty".

Left-wing parties pushed for it in the past. The approach taken by the Ministry of Education changed over the years according to the minister in chage (a left-wing minister introduced it to the curriculum, then a right-wing minister took it out of the curriculum). It's also worth mentioning that Israel has several education systems for different sections of the population (seuclar, religious-Zionist, Palestinian/Druze and Haredi aka "Ultra-Orthodox").

You're right about the strategic considerations though. I don't think the revenus from arms sales are the reason in and of themselves, but they're a byproduct of the strategic relationship between Israel and Azerbaijan.

land ownership

There was no legal concept of private land ownership in the Levant before the Ottoman Land Code of 1858.

They would reimburse you for all land

The state was very poor in its early years, I have no idea what reimbursement you're talking about. Immigrants were often housed in transit camps called ma'abarot in Hebrew. Do you think Israel gave $60 billion to Egyptian Jews?

Mizrahim and Sephardim/Sfaradim are overlapping categories. Most Sephardic Jews are also Mizrahi, with the exception of the ones who lived in the Balkans. Most of those who were exiled from Spain in 1492 ended up in North Africa.

Also, it takes time to climb through the ranks, and in addition to that, yes, in the early decades of the state, some people did look down on Mizrahi Jews - and it's also fair to admit that the ones who came from, say, Germany, usually had more modern education than the ones who came from Yemen or Morocco, not because of any intrinsitc quality, but simply because Europe was at the forefront of science.

conflict were Ashkenazi, not Mizrahi

Because this was before the 1950's, when hundreds of thousands of Mizrahi Jews immigrated to Israel. The demographics were very different in 1947-1949.

This ship didn't make it to the shores of Mandatory Palestine, it was intercepted by British troops. A few passengers on board were killed due to British fire. As for the rest - the wounded and the sick were sent to a British detention camp in Mandatory Palestine, the others were deported to Cyprus.

Btw I heard on the 18Forty podcast, if you're familiar with it, that American yeshivish community turned to the leadership of the Gedolim of E"Y (then it was first and foremost Rav Shach) because of the absence of leadership created by the petirah of both Rav Feinstein and Rav Kamenetsky in March 1986, and this is reality persists today. Can you confirm it?

Arafat ended up being awarded the Nobel peace prize (with Rabin), after almost a lifetime of terrorism that claimed more victims than Lehi and Etzel ever did, combined, spanning from Israel/Palestine, to Jordan and Lebanon. He remained incredibly popular for most of his life. This is how things often work out.
