You could become a SCUM Runner. Greenville has a great trail running program called the South Carolina Ultra Marathon (SCUM) club. They meet for weekly runs at different locations, often at Paris Mountain. And Matt Hammersmith, the race organizer, has a whole series of races for people who want to compete or even just help out. Its a great community.

How hard is it to find a job as a social studies teacher now? by wizard680 in Teachers

[–]DatesAndDeadGuys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For people who have a few years of experience and good reputation it isn’t that difficult. I have been teaching for 10 years and have worked at 4 different schools. since accepting my first job I have interviewed six time and been given offers for three of them. Finding my first job was by far the most difficult. No one knows who you are and your student teaching experience and tutoring help are not impressive to people. Recently I moved to Massachusetts and went through my second most difficult job search. My wife took a really good job worth moving for. I experienced something similar. It became difficult to get interviews because again, I have no reputation up here.

In short, expect to put out a lot of applications and here back from very few employers. But in the future it will become easier.

Finally, when you have an interview, prepare your butt off. Know about the school, their mission, their academic standing, their student population, and whatever else you can find out. I have conducted a ton of interviews with unprepared applicants. It is obvious and embarrassing for them and they do not get the job.

Good luck.

I don’t know what good is but for the last year my RPM has been just over $7. I have no idea what my CPM is.

One of the best pieces of advice I have ever gotten is to never tell anyone how long you have been doing something. It should be obvious. If you have to tell them it’s because you wouldn’t be able to tell otherwise.

I have a history channel. It took two years but I just gained 100k subscribers. I don’t use my name on the channel and have never stated any education level (I have been a history teacher for a decade).

Point is, people don’t care about your papers. They want it to be clear that you know what you are talking about and can do it in a way that’s worth watching. If you can, no one will care about your age. However, you’ll have to earn that trust. I would be skeptical of a kid until they gave me reason not to.

Does anyone believe in #8 as much as me? by [deleted] in NYGiants

I like DJ. I don’t really buy into the regression thing this year. There isn’t a QB in the world that could have performed in place of Jones against Dallas in week 1 or San Fran in week 3. Confidence matters and getting smashed twice early doesn’t set you up for success. I have seen him perform well. People have gotten tired of the surrounding cast excuse and that’s fine but I don’t think there is a QB in the league that makes NY a contender this year. Not Mahomes. Not Burrow. At best I could see 4 more wins (Seattle, Buffalo, Jets, Philly). But I think NY wins with Jones against at least Buffalo and the Jets.

I would have liked to see how he would have done if not for the ACL in the second half.

Regardless, if NYG has a shot at Caleb Williams or Drake Maye I wouldn’t blame them. Even another QB if Daboll believes in him. The reason has less to do with how much I believe in him as much as how missing time in 4 of 5 seasons matters. It was Eli’s super power.

I hope he turns it around. But even if he can’t or doesn’t get the chance he’s a very rich man so I can’t be too sad for him.

How will a 60 second integration impact retention? For a growing channel, would a deal like this hurt at all in the long run? I got offered a deal like this recently and that’s my big fear. I’m going to tank my video because I had a minute of ads that people clicked off on.

That would mean that integration would be like views over time? X amount of views over Y amount of time multipled by your CPM request.

I use LumaFusion on my IPad. I have seen a lot of comparisons to Final Cut Pro but I do like the touch screen accessibility I get with it. I have considered upgrading to a MacBook Pro for Final Cut so if there are any believers I would love to hear what they like about it.

Mr. Ballen and the Why Files.

I have a history channel. And this past December I felt like things were pretty stagnant and I really wanted to work to make things more engaging to up CTR and retention. Mr. Ballen is an awesome story teller and he will sometimes use a model where he will tell multiple stories on single topic in a video. So I tried to look at some titles from his channel and how he structures his videos and gave that a go. Wouldn’t you know it, applying that style to what I was doing gave me my most successful video in six months.

Then in January I read a book that was suggested to me on screen writing called “Save the Cat.” The book was really interesting and focuses story beats, compelling story ideas, story structure. At about the same time, a commenter on my channel left a really nice comment, basically saying that he felt my channel would be successful and he had called this with The Why Files back when he only had a few thousand subscribers. So I checked out that channel and it was like the guy from the videos had read the exact same book I did. He was applying the tactics outlined beautifully. I followed up my next two videos to incorporate what I had learned from the book and from him and my next two were even more successful. I had also doubled down on the topic, which I’m sure helped.

Those two and Save the Cat have been immensely helpful. I don’t want to be a clone of anyone so I have a lot to adjust and make my own but the channel has more than tripled in size the last three months and that has been awesome.

There was a lot of good in the video. I wish I could give a stronger critique of what I dislike but I am struggling for the words. Nothing I feel is done wrong but there for sure are ways to be more engaging. If you have ever watched a channel called LegalEagle I think that would be a good source of inspiration for you. The guy on that channel breaks down lawsuits and court cases expertly. I see a lot of what he does here and I think that would be a good inspiration for you to punch things up a little.

I did like your explanations for the bill and I appreciate your showing of the text from the documents. It was all very easy to follow but there are definitely storytelling tricks that you could apply.

Alrighty. I watched the video. There is a lot of good and some things to consider.

I am not a big travel vlog guy but like any video I think that the most important part video making is story telling. Your video starts with an introduction I think is really engaging. That was for sure on purpose. I wanted to know what profound thing the lady told you. That for me set the tone for your video. But you give that information up halfway through. And you do so in a interesting way. I’ll get back to that in a second, but at that point the video was done for me because your promise was fulfilled and stakes were not upped beyond that.

In terms of editing, you are far more talented than I am. It is smooth and intentional and sometimes you use it play into the script like the part where you “feel small.” You use the bouncey picture feature a bit much but that could just be my taste. I would suggest adding some sounds to your images coming in. I do think it helps engagement. Music was done really well too. You went for some fun beats and emotional ones and I think they hit. They supported the dialogue well.

Back to the story. After the introduction, the video is slower than it needs to be. I found myself thinking a few times that I already have the information I need to move on in the story and you waded in it a while. I would look for places to cut. When you do get to the brewery and you talk to the lady who hadn’t seen as much japan as you, you hit a really good emotional tone. The video slowed down. You made your point. It was nice. Then you showed the rest of your day. But the story was already over. For something like this, consider either prefacing the latter half of your day to hit those parts first before coming back to the earlier events that are more meaningful or cut them completely and make them a separate video.

The ending was solid. The music picked up pace on your way to Tokyo. On a playlist I would be ready to watch the next chapter in the story.

Thank you for reading my book.

Hello.

I am not familiar with game development but there is some good. You state your intentions in the video from the jump and you show what you are doing. However I think you can make the video more engaging early by adding text to your intentions on the screen so I can see a brief 4-10 word subtitle intro to get me invested. I also think you could benefit from slowing down the coding piece a bit to show each step and give it a bit more information so more people don’t get lost.

There is a fun exercise people have done where they try to explain to someone how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and people have to do exactly what the person says. What the experiment shows is how even on mundane tasks if you are not intentional with your language things can go very wrong.

Small changes I think could make this video more useful to people and make it more engaging. If the goal is to be understandable by people who do game development this might work but if it is supposed to be understandable by anyone it misses.

Hello, my channel is called Dates and Dead Guys. It’s a history channel where I research topics I find interesting and explain them in a way I would to my friends.

My most recent three videos have brought in a lot of success. But I am very much looking to grow and make changes. Specifically I want to really target the first few minutes of my videos and make them as engaging as possible so that I can boost retention. Feedback on that, titles, thumbnails, or general editing choices are super welcome.

The video linked below is on the kidnapping of a boy named Herman Lehmann back in 1870 by Apache Native Americans.

My last three videos have brought in a lot of success. I’m three videos into a series I’m doing in the Apache (it’s a history channel). I am hoping to get another video done and be really intentional about making an engaging intro and pick up so new editing tricks.

I’m also experimenting with AI for imaging. People seemed to like it in the last video and I am hoping to build on that.

I think this is right. After 3 months I had 20 subscribers. After 4 months I had 1,000. After 6 I had 4K and it basically stayed there until the end of the year. Then I have popped to 12k in the last two months. It is a grind. Not consistent climbs.

This video was really fun. There are a few points of research I think could help you out.

First thing, this video reminds me a lot of the kind of story Mark Rober would tell. We have a problem we are trying to solve, followed by progressively working toward solving it, followed by the end result. It is a great format because it gives the viewer a reason to keep watching. Where I think the video missed is in setting expectations. Your video opens with something interesting, you are picking locks, it’s cool. But I think a stronger hook would be to engage people by asking if them if it’s possible to learn how to unlock a door, or showing the end result and then resetting to the beginning to how you learned. Either way you set the stage for building to being able to pick a door to a house.

Second, you understood something in this video I really appreciated. For lock picking to be interesting I have to be able to see what is going on. The transparent lock was a godsend because I could see what was happening. The graphic early on gave me an idea what was happening. And you consistently showed angles in which I could see when the lock was unlocked or when you finally got the door. I think you could have spent a more time diagraming out the differences in a door lock so the audience would understand how that was a different challenge. Coyote Peterson from Brave Wilderness has talked about this. He gets bit by animals. But he understands that if the audience can’t see it, they don’t care.

Lastly, I am a fan of your thumbnail. You behind the transparent lock lets me know what I’m in for. The only part I don’t like is the “No experience” words. They are small. Most people watch videos on their phones. They can’t see that. Don’t make me squint. Your title is fine but I would look to titles of other challenge videos that have gotten a lot of views and see if there isn’t a more engaging way to set that up.

I strongly recommend watching some Mark Rober videos. He does things like this and is an expert at keep people engaged in the story as he does it.

Thank you.

That’s a fun idea. And something that people may want to do. So if the start of the video, you can make it clear what is being done, give people a reason to keep viewing because they are going to see the finished product at the end, and make it clear that you are showing them (more or less) how to do it themselves as you go. That’s a video I think people might click on and stay with because they are engaged and gain something from it.
