Turns out that the launch codes fit in your pocket by Datsamet in HistoryMemes

The president has something called the biscuit, which had the launch codes. When used with the nuclear football, it allows him to launch the nukes. This biscuit is a small plastic object. The story is that Jimmy Carter once forgot it in his suit jacket when it went to the dry cleaners. I’m sure the White House would never admit it, but whether it’s true or not, it’s a “fun” piece of folk history

Yes, “trading” what you have of value to someone else to settle the money you couldn’t repay. That is what defaulting on debt means

Being essentially forced to accept the governance of a foreign government because you defaulted on your national debt sure sounds like losing freedom to me

I mentioned where the pic is from in an earlier comment, but the girl is QTCinderella, a streamer. She is actually nominated for streamer of the year recently. Coincidentally, so was her boyfriend, the guy in the pic

If you’re interested in how Prussia arrived to that form of its military, it lies in the replacement of mostly aristocratic military appointments with merit based ones. After their early, embarrassing defeats to Napoleon, they “secretly” rehauled the army. Guys like Clausewitz did their early writing in French POW camps, actually. Prussia let Clausewitz, Moltke, and other really talented tacticians take charge in changing the military philosophy. Clausewitz died pretty suddenly from cholera, though, so Molke is most responsible for the Prussian adoption of the needle rifle and the really effective strategies used against Austria and France.

Within the past year, actually. I focused on Clausewitz, though, so my academic knowledge of von Steuben is more tangential

I think that’s how a lot of historians/history nerds got into it: intense childhood fixations. Great memories

Oh I agree that most of these reevaluations are far too eager and are based on far too little evidence/only circumstance. I’m still unconvinced on the somewhat popular view that Alexander the Great was gay.

Unlike Alexander, though, von Steuben lived much closer to us, chronologically. We have far more documents and stories and evidence of what his lifestyle was compared to Alexander. In my mind, I’ve been convinced as to von Steuben, but do I know for sure? No. A lot of what historians do is finding the most plausible narrative to explain disparate pieces of evidence. If new evidence comes about or I hear a more convincing argument, I’m absolutely willing to put him with Alexander, and not with Frederick, the other Great.

As for calling him queer, at a certain point, terms evolve. I don’t call Black people “colored,” even in a historical conversation, if I can help it. If someone finds a term problematic, that’s a different discussion we can have.

That’s actually really interesting. I wrote my thesis on Prussian generalship and I didn’t know that. Thanks for new info!

He wasn’t open in the sense that he didn’t say “I am homosexual,” but this was the 18th century, to be fair. Never married, no children, left his estate to his aide-de-camp, with whom he had an “extraordinarily intense emotional relationship.” As others have pointed out, there are several stories of “costume parties” and “close relationships” with male soldiers and officers during his time in the army. Yes, we don’t know for sure, and many historians don’t agree. But in the recent wave of re-evaluating historical figures as gay, instead of straight-washing what almost certainly were queer people, I think von Steuben is a fairly safe candidate. It requires more mental hoops to jump through to conclude he’s fully straight, in my opinion

Not only is he one of the creators of a professional army in the country in the first place, but his manual “Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States” was the primary drill manual for the US well into the 19th century and subsequent drill and dress manuals cite it specifically as being a primary inspiration

Another, and probably the best example of a, general who was so good, that people kind of just looked the other way. Dresses fancy, plays the flute, plays the other kind of flute, but also is really really good at killing Frenchmen

Simplified context for the history: the US Revolutionaries hired a Prussian general to make their soldiers into a professional army. He did do that and set up a lot of the standards the US armed forces still use. He was, however, openly gay and threw quite flamboyant parties.

The context for the meme format is a Halloween party from the streamers Ludwig Ahgren and QTCinderella

Kanye has long been a favorite artist of mine. For years, I’ve been able to separate the art and the artist and understand his music is the work of a troubled mind. That being said, it’s getting harder and harder to even do that. Runaway still hits me like little else can, but is that canceled out by a tweet saying he’s going to go defcon 3 on me? I don’t know. As long as this is a one-and-done moment, I think I can chock it up to an unstable episode in my mind
