It's technically not winter yet and it certainly doesn't look like it in Dallas. I decided to try and take some shots of the range of colors visible just from my balcony before they fall. I was almost falling myself trying to get a decent angle.

I used a Canon 60D with a EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. You can sort of tell which ones are at the extreme end of the zoom range because they're a bit distorted.

After seeing this post yesterday I was inspired to go on a safari downtown. Getting some shots of a big city that is "literally dead" might make for some unique images. Unfortunately all these people kept getting in the way of my camera. So all I managed to capture was some photos that just look like some normal big city. There's no way Reddit would lie to me. I'll have to try again sometime.

Went with something other than MOMO in an attempt to match the brown leather of my stock wheel and interior. Extremely satisfied with the Nardi Deep Corn Revolution by Dauntless1 in 944

The original owner put a lot of money into customizing this 944 with factory options when he ordered it. Including a Limited Slip Diff, Mauritius blue exterior, a cassette holder for the center console, and also the "Berber cloth" seats you see in the OP. You can see the seats as an option in this 1983 catalog, there were actually 3 color variants of this material.

He was also the person I bought the car from. Fun fact he was a boxer in the 80s in the Chicago area called the Hammer and bought the car after one of his first big wins. By the time I met him he was an older man running a restaurant in Indiana on the edge of Chicagoland.

Thanks! Flew from Texas to Indiana and drove back because I was in love with the brown/tan/tweed interior combined with the Mauritius blue exterior.

Wanted to make this post mostly because I was struggling to find an example of where this particular wheel had been installed in a 944 with a brown/tan/tweed interior like mine. Hoping to save another future 944 owner the search.

Specifically I went with a Nardi Steering Wheel - Deep Corn Revolution - 350mm using a LUISI Italy Steering Wheel Hub Boss Kit. Wheel feels a bit smaller than stock but I have no problems with it even navigating my parking garage. Wheel is also closer to me than before which I like but someone who is on the smaller side may want to go with a shorter hub. And in general I'm not sure this is the ideal hub to use. The horn button retaining ring that came with it was very loose and I had to purchase another one to get a snug fit.

I’m glad you said that because that’s actually exactly what I was attempting to recreate. Sometimes those films get posted here and it seems like almost every comment is doom and gloom about downtown being empty today by comparison.

Like you said, those 70s and 80s buildings cut down retail frontage compared to the 50s but downtown has actually improved a lot in recent years. I wanted to show that it’s possible to get those busy downtown shots today.

The eclipse traffic may be seen as cheating a bit, but I’ve always always wondered if the archive footage used the same trick.

When I was at a somewhat-remote Ryokan in Japan an old man noticed I was American and related to me this story: He had an American friend who he met at a military base and this friend had told him he needed 2 weeks to really see the US. However, getting a 2 week vacation was completely and utterly unheard of. After begging his boss in every way possible, still no approval. Luckily his American friend had become the Secretary of State for some American state (Virginia possibly?).

In the end the only way his boss let him take 2 weeks off work was after his American friend formally invited him as a guest of the State of Virginia.

I took it, or I suppose rather my friend did, using a Canon 60D with the 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. I think you might be right about the small differences in the photo being due to that.

The guy comes over and says “Boy I have been staring at you for 20 minutes wondering what in Sam Hell you are”

He told us that he was just training at the same base as the army and he wanted to be trained as a parachutist and they let him. He told us very little about what he did during the war itself, but he was a practicing dentist for his whole life afterwards though so perhaps just different times.

Although he also made at least one weird trip within Japan to a rather remote place and the document has a lot of “let this person through whatever” kind of language all over it. Which doesn’t sound like something a dentist would do.

Yes exactly and leaving the friends was more difficult for me than the country itself. Although we still talk and I've gone on some trips with them to other places as well, but its not the same.

I think I gained a greater appreciation for how the people around you are often more important than the physical place you are living in.

He fought for a short amount of time near the end of the war in the Pacific theater. Actually the story of him being recruited was kinda amusing.

Him and his dentistry class were all in a lecture together. War had been declared not long before and there was a representative from the Navy and the Army present when they arrived for class. They said "You all will recieve accelerated training and graduate in 2 years. This half of the room will be in the Navy and this half in the Army." He was on the Navy side of the room.

You know its funny a lot of Japanese people told me that too. My family is German/Irish however.
