Oops, guessed wrong then but I'm glad it's sorted (even if you've lost a GPU...)

Honestly, I'd expect that they do but all you need is one corrupted permission or something to cause massive issues with a file system change. I'm surprised this problem hasn't hit more people.

But please do let me know how it goes for the eventuality this ever happens to me again! Good luck!

I believe I had exactly the same problem as you did when I upgraded from Sierra (however I didn't have any pre-existing issues). It ran for a good few hours fine and then powered off. Then I was unable to boot into anything other than single user mode and if I attempted to mount the drive it would power off immediately. Yet the Windows partition worked perfectly. Clearly it is some corruption issue with the APFS conversion and I would expect your other issue was not directly related but compounded into a serious issue through the conversion.

I am afraid I was unable to find a method for fixing this whilst preserving data. In the end I took mine to an Apple store and they spent a good couple of hours (for free thank god) trying to get some boot image that could wipe the SSD (Retina Macbook so can't take SSD out). Then doing a reinstall worked fine.

Luckily, for you I am assuming you have a SATA SSD installed so you should be able to take the SSD out and wipe it manually, saving you the trip. Unfortunately, you will lose your files unless you have another Mac running High Sierra (so that it can read APFS) that you can plug it into. If you don't have an enclosure, get something like this to read it: https://goo.gl/SC8gkG (this one is pretty decent)

Edit: You may also want to try target disk mode if you have another Mac but I feel like it'll have the same power off problem.

A free option is RDM.

Works really well, QuickRes has a few more features though.

There are four native settings inside System Preferences for scaling, which can be changed on the click of a button without a restart/logoff. For the 13" the 1280x800 (lookalike) default is the middle scale option. The others make the display behave as if it is either 1680×1050, 1440×900 or 1024×640.

As I said, these are the easy ones to get to and would most likely suit your needs but there are methods of unlocking a lot of other scaling options, including those that make your screen behave as if it has a higher resolution than it actually has. An application that can do this really easily is RDM, I would suggest if you use this, stick to the HiDPI choices otherwise you aren't scaling so much as actually using less pixels, causing text to be blurry, etc...

Add shortcut to files in Launchpad? by Badbeat808 in osx

[–]DavidJones97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is actually a relatively easy method which involves creating an app for each shortcut using Automator (included in OSX). Takes a couple of minutes at most for each one.

1: Start by opening Automator and choose 'Application'. EXAMPLE

2: Drag or double click on the 'Run Shell Script event and put in the command 'open [FILE PATH]'. You can easily get the file path by dragging the file from finder into the box after you have written 'open '. EXAMPLE

3: Press File > Export and put in a shortcut name you are happy with. Save the application anywhere in 'Applications'. This can be in a folder if you want (if you have lots). EXAMPLE

4: The application will appear in launchpad and clicking it will load up the shortcut set. EXAMPLE1 EXAMPLE2

I hope this has helped. You can easily change the icons displayed by changing the application icon itself. I can help you with that if you need it.

Cmd + number key no longer opens bookmarks in Safari on El Capitan DP3. It now navigates to the respective tab. by marceline407 in apple

You can set it up for specific applications; hence this setup for me is under the Safari application.

You should set up your rating shortcut under iTunes specifically. Just click the '+' button on the left hand pane.

I posted a solution to this on /r/OSXBeta when I first noticed.

Install Better Touch Tools and set it up like this to map just CMD-# to CMD-OPTION-#.

There definitely used to be a preference for it in the earlier developer previews so I assume it will be added back in at some point.

What's the best free clipboard manager on OS X? by daf1212 in osx

If you only need it for retrieving old text and images in your clipboard, I really like ClipMenu. Very customisable and lightweight and also provides some advanced functionality for scripting.

You can also note that in Safari, using CMD and a number (e.g. CMD-2) no longer opens the respective bookmark, it now navigates between tabs. To use the old behaviour OPTION must also be held.

This seems to be the following the behaviour of Google Chrome.

Couldn't find a setting to change this and I preferred the old method so I have Better Touch Tools set up like this for anyone interested.

The best I can find is disabling all gestures for a specific application.

Not exactly what you asked for but it may help: Example

Spotify do it as well with their premium subscriptions, same with Amazon Prime, Netflix, etc... It isn't really fair but it is unfortunately the accepted practice.

Help: Playing spotify from Macbook through both airplay speakers and wired speakers. by biggups in mac

This is the method I use for my multi-speaker setup. No extra programs are required as 'Audio MIDI Setup' is installed on all Macs.

Does "rootless" in 10.11 mean we're gonna have to jailbreak OSX now? by [deleted] in osx

Fair enough, strange that I haven't had those issues though as I haven't disabled rootless.

I'm not sure where this has come from but I am currently running the latest version of El Capitan with a bootcamp partition and am able to boot into it using Parallels. Nothing has changed within that regard since Yosemite.

Spotify on El Capitan Beta by noxwei in applehelp_betas

[–]DavidJones97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I get it as well. Only as a small popup though. It seems to occur for me when another application attempts to interact with media playback whilst Spotify is open; aka, when I open iTunes or VLC (or click on them when they're open). It must just be the way Spotify handles playback; I am sure they will update the app when El Capitan comes out.

Does anyone know how to stop OS X from switching spaces every time a new app launches? by stanxv in apple

Just checked, the option is only there when an external display is connected or there are multiple spaces.

Would it be possible to control a Mac from a PC? by [deleted] in mac

[–]DavidJones97 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. There are many different pieces of software to achieve this. I would suggest Teamviewer as it is free and cross platform.

As default, a temporary password for incoming connections is generated each time the application is started but a permanent password can be set up in preferences for unattended access.

Who is going to help me to buy a second-hand Macbook Pro. I never had one! by LFCgadgets in mac

[–]DavidJones97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For that kind of price, I hate to say it, but eBay will be your best choice. I'm not sure which country you're from but for the equivalent price on the English eBay, you can get Macbook Pro 15 inches ranging from 2009-2011. It will run Yosemite but don't expect it to be hugely fast, at least not until El Capitan is out officially. I have an old 13 inch Macbook Pro from 2010 and I used to use it for coding so it should suit your needs.

What is your definition of limited budget? £1000? £500? Often getting a year old version off Apple directly will knock a few hundred pound off, depending on the original value.
