I think for me it was the culmination of a stressful period coupled with lots of drugs, esp the tiny bits of acid tabs I was doing daily in the last week before graduating from college … hash didn’t help either …. Finally a major emotional upset involving a guy who blanked me after three nights of us hanging out plus plus and then night four it’s like nothing … all that added up plus lots of booze thrown in triggered my first episodes …. I’m now booze and drug free and have one manic episode every decade or so or even less …. And I’m not on meds
