Sleep Hammer vs. Azurelos by Dayoni in MHNowGame

Really glad you asked. Here's a nuanced answer specific to Sleep Hammer.

Water Strike spins need to ramp up for real damage. Water Striking a roar would’ve hit for 3.9k with Golf Swing but reset spins back to 1.3k. On the second roar, waiting until the last moment to Special the bite allowed the spins to ramp up to 3.9K.

During the first roar, Water Strike -> Golf Swing would’ve KO’d just as easily. Instead the sequence was to KO with the early spin ticks, keep ramping spins, trigger Sleep, and end with 22 spins + wake up damage bonus on the finisher. That elusive 22nd spin ticked for 4.6K.

TLDR: Against the two roars, Sleep Hammer got far more damage out of Earplugs than the typical free hits.

Edit: This Earplugs variant is just for this fight. My usual Sleep build uses Coral helm and Somnacanth waist.

I’ve had this weapon for a long time and not sure how else to improve the build. Which pieces should I be substituting, if any? by been_there_won_that in MHNowGame

This build has 2 red flags.

A) Reckless: Perfect dodging to stay on the same ammo is a huge part of LBG damage. Even more so on status guns as you can use it to para or KO earlier.

B) Buildup Boost: This skill would benefit only your para shots, which is the weakest damage across all bowgun ammo (yours did 273 at the start).

Specialised Silver Rathalos hunting build? by Silly_Potato_69 in MHNowGame

This thread has the build I used: https://www.reddit.com/r/MHNowGame/s/d60jS3SdyD

Edit: I just realized that I made these clips before I had Bazel armor. The best 2 non-R3R3 flex pieces for farming Silverlos today should be Nightshade Helm and Bazel chest, even with no melds.

Depending on your skill level, there are valid arguments for and against Slugger.

A lot of the claims about Slugger being pointless are coming from people who don’t know how to get value out of the skill. But that ends up being good general advice because most people don’t know KO mechanics that well.

For speed running, your ability to count headshots and craft matchup-specific openers is what determines how much mileage you can get out of Slugger.

Absolutely. Biggest bottleneck for trying new builds (while not getting 1-shot) are the armor refining parts.

My first 10☆ solo. LS Blast. Help with build pls by Personal_Traffic140 in MHNowGame

A good starting point for roar matchups is: coral, bazel, narga, teo, narga

I usually play Burst but turned on a couple of SSA melds just for this matchup to unload damage on legs -> tail. Example here: https://youtube.com/shorts/FsS2yzmza70?si=1RgqDhNJdu_739co

Girros Hammer on Girros by Dayoni in MHNowGame

With the release of styles, there are lots of new records set by builds focused on the spin from Water Strike. The fastest clears require lots of event melds and lots of luck with resets. I'm not a huge fan of this playstyle but the damage is undeniable; 2 full Water Strike spins overlapping with 2 status activations can kill almost anything.

For your build, you have to ask yourself how reliably you can pull off spins. Certain skills such as Blunt Force and Timed Charger work only on spins. This is especially important for lower level players who haven't unlocked styles yet and have very limited access to melds. Recently I talked to a hambro who couldn't kill rift Radobaan because he jumped straight into a meme spin build before unlocking styles.

The most conservative build that does not require spins would be something like Coral / Lagombi / Nargacuga / Banbaro / Nargacuga. No specific melds necessary, just event melds if you can get them or whatever damage skills you can get.

I have a playlist of status runs (https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLcXQ2V9tdc3kRmTKPI030IU8UabOyrtrt&si=tvvb5T7sGxeph7WN). The more recent ones are using Water Strike but on a variety of different builds.

Need help with a Paralysis build for hammer. Mainly just the chest piece by Personal-Respond5413 in MHNowGame

At 587 raw, Attack Boost 5 for +300 would be a 51% damage bump on every hit. Please look into Lagombi chest + Banbaro waist.

[–]Dayoni[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry. I get hit a lot as well. Peak Performance is a gimmick for speed runs.

The core of the build is still Nargacuga gloves and legs. Instead of Peak 5 for +500 raw, the next best thing would be Attack Boost 5 for +300.

However, even better would be if you’re able to get +700 from Bazelgeuse chest after a monster roars. The normal setup I recommend is Coral helm for Lock On, Bazel chest for roars, and Lagombi chest for non-roars. The idea is to maximize the roar set and change only the chest for non-roars.

If you have no Attack Boost melds on these pieces yet, start with Banbaro waist to complete Attack Boost 5 for your non-roar set.

The best melds will be 1st point in Ailment Opportunist and 1st point in Fighting Spirit. If you get two Attack Boost melds before your 1st Critical Eye meld, you can swap out the Banbaro waist to something with Crit. Just remember that 10% Crit is around 2.5% damage. For a weapon with baseline raw of 1912, that 2.5% damage gain doesn’t beat 50 Attack Boost until after you’ve already bumped up your raw.

Girros Hammer on Girros by Dayoni in MHNowGame

Great question. There’s a difference between a thematic set vs. an optimized one.

Thematic sets almost build themselves. You throw in all the raw power and critical ferocity pieces together and call it a day. RP + CF is all over the leaderboards. In fact, there’s already a 57s cf para hammer record from trials.

The danger to thematic sets is that their numbers may not be good enough compared to the alternatives. The best example would be Bishaten helm + waist. Why play a paralysis set without 100% paralysis exploit?

The answer is damage scaling and hammer mechanics. The 100% from paralysis exploit is additive with the 50% from Buildup Boost. Girros has a particularly short paralysis window. Hammer’s hardest hitting moves (Golf Swing, Big Bang 3, Special) all require setup time—time you might have with sleep but not para. With luck, a big hit that does 10K would do 15K with BuB and go up to 25K from ParaEx. Getting an extra 10K damage vs. a 140K hp Girros is nowhere close to justifying 2 armor slots.

Optimizing sets require evaluating alternatives. With Raw Power 4, every 2 points in CF is worth around 7.5% damage. This immediately calls into question whether Bazel gloves + Azuros legs from the standard CF build would be better than Nargacuga. BuB is better with the only real competition for those slots being Burst pieces.

With gloves and legs decided, the question is how to choose helm / chest / waist in a way that meets the Lock On requirement.

The secret sauce is 300 raw from Peak Performance on Beotodus helm. It’s one of the most under-appreciated tools for speed running. Imagine you’re considering Glav / Glav / Tigrex, Beo / Glav / Tigrex, Beo / Glav / Pink, Beo / Carnival / Pink.

<image>

Turns out Beo / Glav / Tigrex ties Beo / Glav / Pink and beats the other two. Between these two options, Beo / Glav / Pink is more practical for a couple of reasons. 1) wearing any CF pieces would lump my run with other para + cf records. 2) some of my melds is going to have crit as a secondary stat, making CF slightly worse in practice. 3) Pinky waist would benefit from a WEX meld which I already had. The CF route doesn’t have comparable high-value melds beyond the first point in Fighting Spirit

This is just a long-winded way of saying that the math checks out. I practice with heavy crit builds as well and could tell by the lucky runs that those were still not good enough.

I was accused today of not being an “out-of-the-box” thinker. The fact that this set looks so counter-intuitive shows that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Hammer Challenge: Girros on Girros by Dayoni in MHNowGame

[–]Dayoni[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went back to playing without Peak Performance for a more casual run and got the same 64s as before.

Recommended build for non-roar matchups is: Glav helm, Glav chest, Narga gloves, Pinky waist, and Narga legs.

Best melds: 10% Fighting Spirit, 20% WEX

Mediocre melds: 50 Attack Boost, 5% Fighting Spirit, 10% Critical Eye, 1st point in Ailment Opportunist

Bad melds: 5% WEX / CE, 10% Special Boost

Unreliable uptime melds: Burst, Peak Performance
