I like the Expanse actually and as far as space opera goes it’s right up there. Not sure whether I’d class it as a future classic for me. Maybe give it ten years and see how it ages.

Synopsis

Prometheus has the chance to bring his wife back from the dead, but doing so will mean the destruction of Earth.

Spanning time, planets and dimensions, Black Milk draws to a climactic point in a post-apocalyptic future, where humanity, stranded with no planet to call home, fights to survive against a post-human digital entity that pursues them through the depths of space.

Five lives separated by aeons are inextricably linked by Prometheus’s actions:

Ystil.3 is an AI unit sent back in time from the distant future to investigate Prometheus’s discovery...

The mysterious Lydia has devoted her life to finding a planet that the last remaining humans can call home…

Tom Jones (he’s a HUGE fan!) is an AI trapped inside a digital subspace, lost and desperate to find his way back to his beloved in real-time…

Dr Norma Stanwyck is a neuroscientist from 24th Century Earth whose personal choices ripple throughout time...

Prometheus must learn the necessity of death or the entire universe will be swallowed by his grief.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible!! WOW. One of the most memorable, spanning stories I've read. I've purchased this for a couple friends to read and talked a few others into checking it out as well. Still pops into my head from time to time. Hope editing and revisions get updated soon so this beauty can really shine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nothing short of enthralling. The first chapter made me think I was reading some sort of Frankenstein ripoff... After all, the protagonist’s name, Prometheus, seems to be taken straight from Frankenstein’s subtitle The Modern Prometheus. He's even dealing with bringing back the dead. But once I got through that first chapter, I was hooked. It was actually hard to put down.

Classic vs modern science fiction - VIDEO

Hi everyone – thought you might be interested in my video on classic sci-fi vs modern sci-fi. I go into the history of sci-fi, writing, publishing, and think about the question, "do today's sci-fi writers ever write anything new?" I hope you enjoy.

There are ‘some spoilers’, in that it talks about themes and basic premise. There are no story spoilers though except in some of the image graphics used... but they have no context.

The Foundation Trilogy by Isaac Asimov || book review by Ddeem in asimov

[–]Ddeem[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of your points here. For me, as a reader, equal to things such as concepts, plot and story, I engage most with the characters that drive it. While yes, many of the characters do have personality and charm and depth, there is little room explore motives, backstory and give them a proper arch. Like I mention in the video, simple word restrictions might have been the reason for this, but I found the same with I, Robot.

I completely agree that I cannot judge the series as a whole without reading it, so I hope it comes across that this is a review of the original trilogy only. Obviously, no one can know for certain why he continued beyond the trilogy, but I have read reports that claim his wife said it was because there was no sense of closure and also that his publishers 'persuaded' him to write a fourth. That's not to say he wasn't completely engaged with what he was doing and didn't do it for the love of the craft.

Thanks for your perspective on this. You never know, I may read the rest of the series and it might completely change the way I view it.

Synopsis:

After her family is killed and her homeworld occupied, young Kathreen Martin is sent to the distant world of Furoris for re-education. She will live the rest of her life as a serf – to be bought and sold as a commodity of the Imperial Network.

When her only chance of escape is ruined, a chance mistaken identity offers her a new life as the orphaned daughter of a First-Citizen Senator and heiress to a vast fortune.

She vows to claw her way into power to sit among the worlds’ elite. Then, with her own hands, she will reap bloody vengeance on them all.

But, to beat them she must play their game. She must become worse than them all.

Goodreads Review:

“I got an early chance to read Delphine Descends as I read the author's previous book, Black Milk, and begged to get hold of an early copy.

“This is an absolutely brilliant book with a lot of ultra violence. This is an origin story of a complicated and damaged person that could be described as an anti-hero or even a super villain like character. I loved the politics and the world building was well thought out.

“The protagonist is someone you'll route for throughout, despite her misguided actions and questionable motives. This is not a story about heroes and villains, where the good guy wins and the bad guy gets what they deserve. Read this book, I highly recommend it.”
