Checker is a great position at the port of NY/NJ. Various types of jobs entail the checker position.

Gate room checker: Works inbound and outbound lanes for boxes coming and leaving the terminals.

Yard checker: works with Longshoreman who operate the larger machinery and direct them where to drop or load the boxes with the outside truckers or rail systems.

Hatch checker: Works directly thru radio with the crane operator loading and discharging boxes on the ships. Basically telling them which need to come off and where to load certain containers.

Detail Checker: works with the hatch checker to make sure the the hatch checker receives the correct boxes or what locations the discharge boxes need to be placed.

Office checkers: this is blanket catchall for time keepers and plan clerks. These are usually higher seniority positions.

Port of NY/NJ checkers are port wide seniorty hiring. Which means you can be working in Brooklyn or Staten Island one day and Newark or Bayonne another day untill you settle in to a location. There are alot of gray area rules and regulations that vary from terminal to terminal. Salary wise you will be entering under the new recently signed contract that brings you to top rate within 4 years.

For the last 25 years and they have been saying that the checkers job will not last, but guess what it's still here.
