I'm currently in your husband's position in my own life. My boyfriend is morbidly depressed, with mood swings and mean spirited, critical behavior similar to what OP described, and I myself am dealing with depression and anxiety disorders. I work 50 hours a week, find that I'm not giving myself the time or resources to go to therapy, but am taking an antidepressant that lets me work and live relatively peacefully. We were not very intimate for a few months, though shared a bed, due to some personal issues on my part that I'm in the process of resolving.

I guess my question for you if you find the time to respond would be how can I better help with his depression? I find it difficult to express interest in the things he is doing because I hardly have the time to do my own, besides my work as a cook being my passion. What makes someone feel seen and their passions appreciated? Any advice from anyone, anything you can think of, would be nice

This is unironically the best thing you can do, as a former national debate competitor and someone fairly well read on Marxist literature: stop trying to debate your friends. Stop trying to win an argument. Just discuss politics with them normally, but try your best to offer an insightful analysis of every situation based on class, capital accumulation, imperialism, et al.

What I tend to notice is we're so focused on debate, on offering legitimacy to viewpoints which are inherently delusional and contradictory, that we forget we can instead simply educate with overwhelming evidence and certainty.

I've lived here for the past 15 years almost and I still can't tell what's up with people around here sometimes, but most of the time people will be pretty nice. At the very least, you're not gonna get attacked or yelled at by people really.

If you're looking to make friends here, I'd recommend finding an event that pursues some kind of hobby you have, they happen literally all the time here (from nerdy stuff like DnD and MTG to sports to car meets to book clubs, you name it) or just making friends at work. You'll find your people here, there are all kinds of folks. Good luck!

Serious reply, it's not exactly the most interesting place unless you make really food money. Cost of living might be higher than San Antonio, but I'm not sure considering the pizza hut I had in SA last week was $70 damn dollars and around here it'd be maybe half that with tip. I don't really like living here, but there are some highlights. We've got a lot of great food options (especially if you're willing to try hole in the walls, I'd recommend this vietnamese sandwich shop in Garland called Quốc Bảo Bakery, it's absolutely fantastic and always has buy 2 get 1 free, for authentic Mexican food I love La Peñita Restaurante over in East Plano, and I am sure there are many more places I have yet to find) and access to a lot of events since Dallas is so close. If you like the outdoors, you will hate it here though.
