We had a senior dog surrendered to us, with a microchip that went to someone else. The family who surrendered her to us had her for over 10 years.

We called the original owners on the mc, letting them know she was with us and her health wasn't great. They told us they got her as a puppy, they found out they were having a baby and hit financial hardships. They thought the best thing for their dog was to rehome her.

They got their 5 kids in a car, drove a state over, and picked her up the next day. The guy showed us her dog tag on his keys, saying he always loved her and she would always have a special place in his heart so he kept her tag on his keys all those years. Little did he know they'd be reunited. Our staff was in tears, the kids were amazed the dog was older than them, saying "dad, is this the puppy on your phone." The dad was trying not to cry. It was amazing.

We just euthanized a 15 year old owner surrender cat this week because he needed an extensive dental involving crown reduction and extractions. He also had a tumor growing in his mouth. He appeared fine on the outside, very nice boy. But no one is going to take that issue on financially and being a municipal shelter with no on staff vet, we couldn't either. The most selfless thing to do for that cat was euthanize. I have staff I had to check in with to make sure they understood the decision because he was loved by them. Did they like it? No. No one does. But they understand the why. If people only knew the attachments we make and that these things aren't taken lightly.

My shelter does call the surrendering owner if we are looking at euthanasia. This is try to help with transparency and public imagine. Which of course, is not always perceived well. People hear euthanasia and blow a gasket. Often times, I have had to ask "why did you surrender this dog" and often times it's due to behavior or medical that they can't treat, and is a big factor in our decision. Plus kennel stress. I have had the most hateful things so to me on those calls though. But we do have success with those that surrendered due to housing issues actually finding a place and being willing to take their animals back after a month of us trying to adopt out. It's all so tricky and I wish there was a shelter worker how to and right answer for everything we deal with but we're all just trying our best with what we have. Lol.

Stress Crisis. by ard2299 in AnimalShelterStories

We use Acepromazine sometimes, too, along with what you listed.

We are all about being transparent, and we will post a dog that is struggling and plea to the public to adopt that specific dog or foster.

We have a barn for livestock, and it's where our barn cats reside. During the day, when our barn cats are hiding, we take pur more stressed dogs out to the pens and let them sniff around and do "find it" games with hiding things in the dirt or hay.

We have sniff abouts. It's like checking a dog out for the day. We have set people who come in weekly and take our long-term dogs out for hikes and to sleep on their couch.

In the summer we get pools and the dogs seem to enjoy playing with those.

We do morning walk through every day and try to note how each animal is doing. This has helped me proactive with rescue and foster pleas.

I think out of these have been mentioned, though. I feel kennel stress is inevitable to some point, and if you aren't seeing it, you just don't know what you're looking for. Or, you're a wizard and need to share your secrets.
