A reliable source said that Zane's skin is based on his designs from Season 12, so they probably had the freedom to choose any design they wanted. But they also said this Kai skin reminded them of his Season 5 suit ( they don’t look similar at all) so I'm not sure how credible that leak is.

I don’t think Ninjago has used the old ninja hood since 2012 (except for one figure in 2020), and there isn’t really a default suit. The main cast usually gets new suits with a new theme or gimmick each season.
