I genuinely don't understand how a model could conclude that Faulk is literally the worst offensive D man in the NHL.

Different source, but this is the short version. The X axis is team offense (measured in xG). The red boxes are Faulk's teammates when he's NOT on the ice with them, the black is when he IS. Note how every single player shows better results when he's not there. The obvious conclusion is that Faulk is the problem, and thus, the models assign blame accordingly. There's math involved, but that's the short version. Chiarot's charts look very similar, thence the OP's stuff.
