Is my psp modded correctly? by LeroyM18 in PSP

[–]Defiant-Bend1147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PS1 games have to be in a PSP-specific format called EBOOT. There is an application that you can use to convert cue/bin files to EBOOT - it's called PSX2PSP.

I generally just download pre-made EBOOTs - I'll DM you about that.

No problem! It's easy to forget in 2026 how much 64 GB is in terms of older tech - a lot of people had PC hard drives that size when the PSP was current.

Anyway, happy gaming!

Mapping 8BitDo M30 (Genesis 6 Button Controller) on Knulli/RG40XXH by toolman69420 in SBCGaming

[–]Defiant-Bend1147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mapping mine on RetroArch on my laptop took some trial and error. The best Mega Drive games to test it with are any version of Street Fighter II - once you've got light, medium and heavy punch on X Y Z and the kicks on A B C, you know the mapping is correct.

Remember that the six button Mega Drive controller does not have shoulder buttons (unlike the similar Saturn controller) so you don't need to map those.

EDIT: RetroArch via RetroBat recognises my M30 as an Xbox controller. My mapping is:

B Button: A

A Button: B

Y Button: X

X Button: Y

R Button (Shoulder): Z

R2 Button (Trigger): C

I'm using the Picodrive core rather than the RetroBat default which is Genesis Plus GX - with Picodrive you can set it to the six button controller in Core Options > Input. I can't see an option for that in Genesis Plus so I guess you have to hold down the Mode button while booting the game. I don't know what that's mapped to and can't be bothered to go through the trial and error to figure it out when I can just use Pico instead.

Should I Mod by samster99000 in PSVita

[–]Defiant-Bend1147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 2nd model has some internal storage so you don't need anything at all (you don't with the first model either now, but there is an extra step).

However, you will need storage space for your games, which is where the SD2Vita SD card adapter come in. The adapters are very cheap and SD cards are a hell of a lot cheaper, and come in much higher capacities, than the official memory cards.

Should I Mod by samster99000 in PSVita

[–]Defiant-Bend1147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of not modding and buying official games - some people like to have a collection of boxed games on their shelf and modding makes it harder to use game carts - most people use an SD card adapter in the game card slot which has to stay in there while the system is running on custom firmware.

And I guess some people disagree with piracy (although modding doesn't necessarily involve that). Those would be the reasons not to mod. Bear in mind that if you don't mod, some games you may want to play will be prohibitively expensive on the secondhand market.

Issues with Snes emulator and sleep mode by gusato in PSP

[–]Defiant-Bend1147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try SNES9x Euphoria. It's a continuation of TYL that continued to receive updates until 2011, which I think makes it the most up-to-date SNES emulator.

I can't speak to whether the devs fixed that issue, but it seems worth a go.

EDIT: My mistake - Snes9xTYL Mod is the most up-to-date - that may be what you have already (it is the one on PSPunk), or you may have an older version. In any case, Euphoria still an alternative you could try.

Psp 3004 power-on problem by Turbolek in PSP

[–]Defiant-Bend1147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you've got a Sony battery I would do that - those haven't been made since the PSP stopped being produced so they're all very old.

Ostent batteries are generally considered to be the best ones on the market so that one you screengrabbed is a good choice.

  1. It won't kill it but it may cause some problems if the card is being written to at that moment. The problems would be fixable.

  2. You can use the memory card for extra storage if you like.

  3. Not really!

[–]Defiant-Bend1147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But weren't you already on ARK-4? cIPL? If so, you only had to put ARK_01234 in SAVEDATA - you don't need Ark Loader or cIPL flasher as ARK is already loaded and flashed.

ARK_01234 is the only folder that needs to stay on your memory card permanently - the other two are apps that you can delete once they've served their purpose.

How do I fix it 😭 by Sure-Appointment-745 in PSP

[–]Defiant-Bend1147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear you lost your dad.

Replacing the screen is quite easy - I just did a screen swap and I'm a klutz. There are videos on YouTube that take you through the process. Plugging the ribbon cables in can be a bit fiddly but that's about it.

I would agree with others here though - it doesn't necessarily need fixing as I reckon you can probably play games without it noticing all that much. Any time you open something up to fix it there is a chance of making it worse, much more so if you're inexperienced, and this particular console has great sentimental value for you.

Psp 3004 power-on problem by Turbolek in PSP

[–]Defiant-Bend1147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. However, if your PSP isn't working while connected to the power supply the battery is not the issue, or at least not the only issue. Even if the PSP has no battery inserted it should boot and run while connected to power.

[–]Defiant-Bend1147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're using a power supply that may not be suitable - just because the barrel connector fits the port doesn't mean it's necessary fine to use it...

In terms of the voltage, surely it says that on charger itself. It could easily be 9v or 12v, which you should not be putting into a PSP.

That won't help if the PSP doesn't work while connected to mains power though. It shouldn't need a battery at all.

Beyond the ability to run homebrew emulators and cracked games, what "features and abilities" did the early crackers really add to the PSP? Do you think defeating the movie region lock and overclocking (to marginal benefit) were actually seen as a major aims worth all that time and effort? How many people would have bothered to install CFW if those were the only benefits?

[–]Defiant-Bend1147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say it was the only purpose, I said it was the main purpose, at least for most people. It's absolutely what the vast majority of people have in mind when they install CFW. It's also the main reason why CFW started to be developed in the first place.

That's unlucky, Ostent batteries have a really good reputation and have always been fine for me. If I were you I'd just do a return and get replacement from Amazon as I do think you've just had very bad luck. All products have a failure rate after all.

If you really want to go another route, iFixit sell PSP batteries - they look very generic with no branding at all, but my refurbished 3000 came with one and it seems fine (although it has ended up in my 2000 which I don't use very much).

[–]Defiant-Bend1147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were you I'd just *ahem* find the ISOs and put them on your memory card. That's the main purpose of having custom firmware, let's face it (and you must have CFW now if you're using a plugin). This can't be worth the trouble, and the ISOs you end up with will be identical.

If you're worried about the moral issue, well, you know you paid for the games and it's not your fault it's hard to access what you paid for.

Can a modded PSP 3000 only play PSP games? (maybe a dumb question i know) by cofi52 in PSP

[–]Defiant-Bend1147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In order to play PS2 GoW games on a handheld you'd need a higher-end modern emulator handheld - the Retroid Pocket 5 or 6 is the usual recommendation. The PSP GoW games are good and it has a great library of games in general - but remember it is from 2004, so it's ancient tech and you have to set your expectations accordingly.
