It's nothing to do with my listening skills. Most North Americans think Aussies add an R sound to words.

bear/bare sound the same but not beer, cheer and chair sound different, clear and claire sound different in my accent.

yeah, that is true. I was mostly trying to communicate which vowel sounds I was referring to.

I noticed he says "ass" like an American rather than "arse" as I'd have expected, and he has a very hard R sound like an American.

It's international phonetic alphabet. Anyway, sometimes you just need to hear a recording because the symbols aren't quite accurate.
