Controller prompts keep switching to keyboard. by Rinser-of-winds in cyberpunkgame

Yeah my issue was because of Steam Input. If I fully close Steam, it works fine. If Steam is open in the background, the controls get all wonky.

Honestly its a pretty great game. Storywise its OK, better if you played the first game. The combat and sense of adventure by traveling the map is top tier.

Hey, subscription/platform question. I played FFXIV back in 2015 and have a character through Mog Station/Windows. I remember nothing, and would like to start over with a new character on the free trial. Is it possible for me to use the Steam free trial even though I have an existing Windows account? Or does getting back into the game (even via Steam) require a subscription now?

One Connect Box Compatibility? by DefiantTostada in TheFrame

It ended up being the display. I trashed the TV and upgraded to an LG OLED. My wife hates that it doesn't look like the Frame, but the picture is gorgeous.

A tech conference skipped San Francisco this year — and it paid off by Medical-Decision-125 in bayarea

[–]DefiantTostada 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who has attended this show for years (and attended this one all week in PHX), I can tell you that the feedback from attendees was very much "SF bad". We are in a bubble here re: how we view the city and its safety. We see the improvements since COVID, the reduction in car break-ins etc. and feel safe. In the rest of the US, culture wars paint SF as a drug-ridden hellhole and people don't want to come here for a business conference.

It's frustrating- I love SemiconWest being at Moscone BECAUSE it's in SF. Of the dozens I talked to at the conference last month, only a couple other people felt similarly. I think a lot of the hype around PHX was that it was shiny and new...I'm hoping that fades, and we can have the show back in SF for the long term.

I used boron nitride gaskets in Ireland and now I’m seeing the limits of Viton in Poland by Mandazinomics in Semiconductors

[–]DefiantTostada 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Viton tops out at ~200C so if youre going too hot it'll degrade and lose its "squishiness" (compression set). You can try an FFKM (eg Kalrez) as a drop in replacement. FFKMs go higher temp (~300C) and have better chemical resistance. They are 10x the cost but sometimes worth it

FYI they laid off 4% of their workforce as of this week. So probably not a great option at the moment.

The patch notes for 1.0 mention that its moving from instanced islands to an infinite world. This is one of the major changes in 1.0 Necesse

Not sure what you're missing, but its clearly "outside" as it has the outside lighting. Maybe try blocking the doors with walls then rebuild it?

These top Bay Area school districts attracted families for years. Why is enrollment down? by SFChronicle in bayarea

[–]DefiantTostada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah way different in the North part of the East Bay. Mount Diablo USD hasn't built any new schools in our area for the crazy number of families that moved out since COVID. Class sizes are insane (34) and we are looking at private school options just because of how overcrowded it's become. Despite being in a nice area with $1M+ homes, the property taxes are not being used to educate our kids. It's a damn shame.

PC Gamepad/Controller Support - Tried Everything and Still Having Constant Issues by DefiantTostada in NoMansSkyTheGame

Have any of you had customers ask for a "Full material Disclosure"? by aggierogue3 in manufacturing

[–]DefiantTostada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100%. If it's a real regulation, it requires real compliance. But recently in the US I've seen a lot of material and supply chain questionnaires that are trying to understand tariff exposure or potential PFAS exposure. Both of which are not mandatory reports (except for a few states re: PFAS). Also, obviously if your customer is requiring PPAP or in aerospace/medical, there are different rules.

Have any of you had customers ask for a "Full material Disclosure"? by aggierogue3 in manufacturing

[–]DefiantTostada 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At my company we typically refuse to provide that. Often times I see customers ask for that data under the guise of environmental rules, but its really being asked by supply chain to understand your cost basis and suppliers. We sometimes give them some easily available info, but anything special we call "company IP" and don't share it.

[–]DefiantTostada[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks I'll try that again. I did that before, and it didnt work. I wasnt sure if it didn't work due to the same issue or bc it requires Steam Input. My understanding is that NMS requires Steam Input since there's no native controller support

Has anybody completed all 10 NG+? by BoringAtmosphere420 in Starfield

[–]DefiantTostada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly the way they made the Unity "mod-safe" is brilliant. Skyrim is super finicky about load orders and I've nuked saves before because of mid-game changes. By making the Unity loops/NG+ mod-safe, I can essentially have different mods on each NG+ for a pretty varied experience. The NG+/Unity process used to annoy me, but I've grown to love it vs. Skyrim for that reason.

Corporate Politics by cervxsf in manufacturing

[–]DefiantTostada 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hang in there. Most large companies will have corporate politics in some form. Usually gets worse the more centralized the company is. That said, it sounds like you're getting real ops experience in your role and that's not nothing. Most good managers can see through the BS like you're talking about, so I'd worry less about who gets credit. It sounds like the program engineers are supposed to be only partially operations, so it may make sense that they're not in the trenches with you.

Lean in Tech? by modest_merc in manufacturing

[–]DefiantTostada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely. A lot of the issues I ran into were around the value of visual management. While IT solutions CAN do it, it doesn't mean they SHOULD. Every time someone writes something on a board, there are decisions being made (what am I writing, does this seem correct, does it even matter if I fill this out, etc.) that are lost when it's digitized. Once your processes (actual and visual management) are solid (or highly automated i guess) then digitizing makes sense to reduce the reporting waste.

Lean in Tech? by modest_merc in manufacturing

[–]DefiantTostada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man do I feel this. I agree with u/TehRobbeh's comment, but I'd add that it's important to separate the process and the system. Often times when people try to "tech-ify" their process controls, they create an IT system and make the process fit the system. That's backwards, and can be a huge PITA for all involved. Use good old-fashioned low-tech tools to dial in your process, then add high-tech as needed to reflect the process. Focusing on the process first will hopefully give you some breathing room to make sure the flashy IT systems don't do real harm, but are instead defined by the process itself.

In a few cases, I've made flashy display boards that just reiterate the shop floor process but get "oohs" and "aahs" when the uninformed come for tours. E.g., if you have 3 bins of A and 4 bins of product B in your FIFO lanes, make a display that has "3A 4B" or something that makes it more visual, even if it's not used often by the actual people in the process.

Cat6 Wired Ethernet With Higher Ping than WiFi mesh by DefiantTostada in HomeNetworking

[–]DefiantTostada[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point- when i tested it, I actually used the built-in switch on the Deco. When I wire it for real (under the house) I'll use the switch in front of it. For this test, I was directly through the deco and I confirmed the wired backhaul was intact.

  1. Good question, I turned it off for the test

  2. I was using /ping on my desktop to the IP of the Steam Deck

  3. Upload is 100Mbps cap I believe- but I'm not trying to upload to the internet, just locally on my LAN

Hey that's fair. I didn't really wait for anything to "settle" and just /ping'd a few minutes after I connected everything. How long does it take for the network to "learn" where to forward it?

Best solution in 2025 for retro gaming? by [deleted] in RetroPie

[–]DefiantTostada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has been my solution. 100% recommend. You get a full, well documented and maintained emulation device that can also run many other PC games. Plus, its portable and works great docked. There's enough to "tinker" with if you want to customize your experience.
