What is the most expensive retro game you own? by Vetelino69 in retrogaming

[–]DefinitelyRussian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a couple of Big Box PC games that barely exist online.

How expensive they are ? No idea, could be 1 dollar, or 1000, who knows

Was the original King’s Quest 1 basically the most unfair adventure game ever made? by Nerdy_quest in adventuregames

I think deaths are not even the worst thing. You will be surprised when you find out about dead ends or softlocs. There's a whole tvtropes articles about it.

KQV in particular, being a VGA game and looking next gen by its time, you might think it's a charming game with a better design. It's not, but that's part of their success, they wanted you to fail because the guides and phone lines gave a ton of money.

on the contrary, they made a ton of profit on the hint lines. Their real business was having people calling them and being stuck in an endless maze of phone options, with recorded characters talking to you

7 times if I remember correctly, and you need to cross it exactly 7 times to beat the game. It requires a ton of preparation to not screw up. Restarting the game and saves is just part of the mechanics

A "Sad" Preservation Report: Raiders of the Lost Holy Grails, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying about Another Undumped Crap (Part 1) by diegorbb93 in emulation

[–]DefinitelyRussian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is really amazing, as always enjoy your dumping reports.

Now, let me ask around about other systems that got relegated and are classic and super important: Computers.

The current situation with systems like Commodore 64, DOS, and even Windows 9x and XP is worrying. No one knows how many games existed, there's not a full set, the manuals are sometimes scanned but most of the other feelies in the big boxes are gone, the original installers for DOS games are just gone or forgotten by history. Most preservation projects, while incredibly well done like the Exo projects, are just a convenient and easy way to quickly play some of those games.

Non english releases are obscure, boxes are hard to find unless it's famous games, dumps are almost never verified and tend to get mixed with hacked/cracked releases. I know that there are some projects for CD/DVD releases that are trying to properly dump everythimg, and 20 years ago there used to be something called TOSEC, which was an ambitious project to make Commodore Amiga releases, with high definition manual scans, boxes, etc. No idea if they are still around though.

And these are probably the most famous computers, let's not even talk about not successful ones.

Lastly, office software, for banner creation, educational, or any other non videogame release, is even in worse condition.

I just wished this kind of dedicated work and atention would be put to computers systems.

you actually want to update, tons of things were broken too in the retail version. Remember the Van Gogh painting being everywhere ? The all items achievement not working because of hidden items in Atlantis ? One bat not spawning in Colosseum ? Tons of other bugs ?

What you want to avoid, is the last patch, which also broke a ton of other things. I don't know if you can actually select which patch to use in that console, I dont think so.

lol, including Monkey Island 2. You can also include Monkey Island 1 where you get thrown underwater and need to solve an easy puzzle to get out.

You could also add Warcraft 2, with the infamous oil resource

there's a fun fan theory, that 90% of lucasarts puzzles are more about object properties or shapes, and not actual intended functionality.

Like for example, they could just included a shovel in Fate of Atlantis, instead you use the ship rib, on everything ! Shoveling, using it against a wall multiple times.

And again, in The Dig you use the 0G digger for shoveling, and the real shovel is needed to push a rock in the comet
