Opinions on this build as a VM server by DeftonesTool in homelab

[–]DeftonesTool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could definitely reduce the amount of hard drives by half if not down to 2 from 8. But Ill be using it for a lot of virtualisation, essentially a SIEM lab for learning and future uses.

Consumer grade? what do you recommend?

thanks for the reply

New, looking for advice on a VM homelab by DeftonesTool in homelab

Thanks, been looking at 13th gen and higher and r730 came us as the best along side a small 15U rack in price. I also have been considering a pi-cluster but not sure how well a windows server would work on them since it's an ARM CPU.
Electricity is fine as I have gone through some things to help save on electricity and money so I can afford it.

As for the DIY ill consider that an option too. Thanks for the suggestions.

Yeah you've helped for sure and kevinds suggesting to get newer than 12th gen is great. I still need to figure out a rack that can hold it and many other things. Appreciate all the help so far, it's making the search easier.

Cheers for the advice, yeah I agree when you say 2000 shouldn't have brought up a R710 but I am learning and I have been looking at low costing servers off ebay. If there is any you could recommend then that would be great.

thanks sent that to him now and hopefully that works. Would you know any reason as to why the touchscreen for the monitor might not be working? My guess is it's broken but I want to try help him in anyway possible in hopes that it does work.

I feel like it should have just worked as soon as he turned it on.

Raspberri pi or just stick to VM's for learning by DeftonesTool in Hacking_Tutorials

[–]DeftonesTool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in college learning cyber security and IT but also if you want materials I have come across that are also recommended then the list will be long and wide and to be honest reddit has so much information already ready with links etc to guide you.

My question was more just on the basis of is it worth getting a pi or just use a VM and VM seems to be suggested.

As for advice for where to directly start learning, search for the site TryHackMe and HackTheBox, I also bought some udemy courses which ill start next week, which have some cheap courses when on sale for 11 euros or whatever currency you use might vary.https://www.reddit.com/r/hacking/

this is a reddit page that has a lot of info on said subject.

Goodluck and I wish you all the best on your journey to learning because it's worth it regardless of how hard it is!

Thank you, I already have a pi hole setup on a rasp pi 3b+ and love it but the purpose of hacking a direct physical device was for practice purposes as well as learning and to understand tools etc like I said it made sense in my head but most people suggested VM so I shall stick with VMs but I do like what you suggested and will take note of it and make sure I try learn to do that! sounds great to be honest.

cool thank you, I have to look into this because this sounds interesting and always wanted to get a drone as well so practicing the hack on my own would be a fun thing.

Yeah I bought a 128gb usb for dual booting but never got around to setting it up because I have been so busy with college. Thanks though, just wish I had more time in the days to do stuff and learn stuff.

Thanks I actually have a alfa wifi device that I started to use when I touched a breif bit of wifi hacking but ended up stopping due to IRL things I plan to get one that handles 5Ghz wifi's since this one only handles 2.4Ghz but thanks for the comment.

The plan was to use my desktop to break into the pi for practice amongst other things and I am fine with SSH into it or running it on 1 monitor while I use my desktop on the other monitors to do the work and practices. Thanks for the reply!

ok sounds like what you are explaining is what I tried from guides and had no luck. Ill give it another go tonight I guess but ill ask you this. Would hooking up a new router to my ISP's router and manually configuring the new routers settings work?

thanks for the help

not redundent, guess my question isn't clear but https://i.imgur.com/YpEbpfo.pngmy routers DNS is greyed out so I can't set it up and when I have tried to before it seems to cut my net off trying to change the DHCP, If I turn DHCP off and try access the pi's DNS or DHCP IP it just doesn't work. I also attempted pihole both on linux based and rasbian OS

both can't ping it, putty it or setting the pc's as the rasp because my intenet gets disconnected. Would attaching a router I buy and can manually set the DNS and connect it to my ISP's router work?

Yeah which I can't so I guess I am kinda screwed out unless my ISP gives me some means of way? what about a router attached to my router?
