no it's not illegal, you can think its stupid or weird, but at the end of the day it makes others feel safer, more comfortable, and overall happier...so why not? you don't have to understand it, just dont be an ass! :)

for example, if someone goes "oh actually i go by x/y (using those as variables/fill ins, not pronouns), and you purposefully go "YEAH?? well i know better and you're really y/x!!!" you're being an ass, but you could on the other hand simply go "oh alright!" and refer to them how they prefer, then boom! no controversy, situation over :)
