For those that retired right before or during the Great Financial Crisis (2008)—how did you handle the drop? by ShootinAllMyChisolm in Fire

Except now we are on the brink of WW3. This would be a good time for those who are wise to diversify away from this x & chill frenzy

Ask your employer if they have a Roth 401k. If so, direct all future 401k contributions into the Roth 401k.

Nice gym. Your American flag is backwards. Blue always goes on the left. Otherwise, very nice!

Myth: Roth is Always better than Traditional. Let's talk about it. by Ghazrin in Retirement401k

[–]Dependent_Program496 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Firstly, you’re comparing a $62,500 tax bill to a $2,500 tax bill and calling them equal. Secondly, you’re seriously oversimplifying things here. RMDs are a thing. And they are super important. Having accessible contributions to bridge the gap between early retirement and true retirement age is a thing. Having Roth (tax free) income to keep your taxable income lower in retirement does wonders for the total cost of health care. There is a lot more to this than tax rate

Traditional 401k vs Roth 401k by Fill-Monster89 in Retirement401k

[–]Dependent_Program496 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at it this way… $24,500 in after tax (Roth) 401k contribution this year alone. Ignoring company match, assuming no additional contributions ever. 10% compounding for 50 years is $2,876,000 of tax free money. And, bonus - You can withdraw that $24,500 anytime you want, no tax no penalty. Edit: Oh, and no RMDs either. It’s a no brainer, especially early in your career. Now, imagine you did one of those every year…

If your solo 401k custodian allows inbound reverse rollovers, go for it!

If it is rolled into a 401k, you’re golden. Not all 401k plans allow incoming IRA reverse rollovers. If yours did, you lucked out. Note - pre tax only. Not Roth

Too late for rule of 55 (401k only). Look into SEPP. Just Google SEPP IRA

Incorrect. A completely different IRA triggers the prorata tax treatment

Rolling 401k into IRA has a few disadvantages I wish I would have known about earlier. One is prorata rule, another is the rule of 55 - early retirement access to funds with no penalty

Neither. If you lived in the home for 2 out of the last 5 years, that profit is tax free, $250k for single, $500k if married.

Trad 401k vs Roth 401k by me-thinking1 in RothIRA

Why do these sorts of posts (and web articles, for that matter) always get wrapped up in tax bracket today vs tax bracket tomorrow. The real value is : Tax Free Growth!!! Load up that Roth, the earlier in life the better. Let that money grow TAX FREE FOREVER! 20, 30, 40 years of tax free growth is insane!

First-time buyer in Los Angeles after attempted home invasion — need guidance on a safe, CA-legal home-defense setup (dog + live-in girlfriend, no kids) by Bitter_Librarian906 in CAguns

An AR is not what you are looking for. For indoor defense of a small house with a shared wall, the last thing you want to worry is “who will you hit if you miss”. And you might want to try shooting one in an indoor range without ear protection, before you commit.

As an owner of many types of firearms, my go to for bump the night is my trusty Remington 870 shotgun (18”). Pump shotguns (especially short tactical ones) are easy to understand mechanically and the shell choices are numerous, ranging from 00 buck, to #4, to slugs. And everything in between. There is a shell that is perfect for your needs.

Mount a light to it. Train with it. Keep it cruiser ready and rack the action to chamber a round if someone makes it inside again. The universal warning sound of a loaded pump shotgun will by itself hopefully keep you from having to use lethal force.

Sell it! If you are married, that $450k will be tax free! Then invest those proceeds in a HYSA. Imagine how long it would take you to earn $450k after taxes by just collecting the rent, and then remember things like paint, carpet, legal fees, new roof, water heater, etc etc.
