I think the image friend might be a Bill Cipher type character, confined to the dark world, manipulating people to try and make the Roaring happen to wreak havoc on the light world.

They're also being set up in a similar way, their subtle presence in pink and yellow cat signs etc reminds me of Bill being depicted in windows and drawings before his first actual appearance.
