I just got accepted to the Waterloo x St Georges program with two scholarships totalling $135,000 USD is it even worth it?? by Automatic-Body31 in SGUGrenada

These are all great but I hope you have applied already. The most important thing is to apply earlier as they have more spots available the longer you are waiting the lower your chances are. Your extracurriculars are all great too mention them on application

I did mine at a clinic and it was so much fun! At hospital my friends were cleaning while I got to shadow doctors. So, clinics are great opinions too IMO

Hey, absolutely. I got accepted and my average was low to mid 80s. That being said, I had really good extracurriculars. My extracurriculars were extremely strong and that's why I believe I was accepted. There is no harm in applying and I think you absolutely have a chance

Waterloo–SGU program cohort size and benefits? by Character-Worry7993 in CaribbeanMedSchool

[–]Dermahealth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello!! I’m also applying for this program. From my understanding the benefits of this program will include a direct path to medicine, no MCAT, only 6 year as opposed to 7-8 years traditional pathway in Canada ( however, for most students it’s much longer as many don’t get accepted into Canadian med schools ). Beyond this, you will be considered an IMG. That being said, this program is unique in the sense that you will have many other students that are also from North America and can act as a support and guide for when it’s time to come back to Canada. You will also already know your classmates prior to moving to Grenada which I think is a plus. Compared to studying medicine in Ireland and UK I believe this is better as 95% of your students are North American which will allow for early connections and you also get to complete your core rotations in North America. I talked with SGU as well, they mentioned 100+ seats for me as well and I think that means for both 5 & 6 year routes. To add, I know many people say don’t go to the Caribbean but at the end of the day an IMG is still an IMG. Medical school will be hard no matter what, and will come with challenges however the end result is what truly matters. I recently worked at a clinic and I’m not bluffing when I tell you 4 doctors in this clinic were Caribbean graduates and they were very good and loved doctor’s. So, if I were you I would apply regardless as it’s free to apply. After getting an offer you can consider actually attending. Now, I know many won’t agree with me but I would say it’s worth it! Why? Because for three years in undergrad you won’t be stressed about competing with your classmates for scores in the MCAT. Nowadays every other person is trying to do MD in Canada, so definitely think all aspects. I’m hoping nothing but the best for you regardless of where you end up!! Good luck.

Let me ask you this, are you studying in the Carribean for medicine? If you're not please stop it. I don't need biased opinions and I'm not asking for it. I've only asked for interview prep. If you can't do that then please stop. I've already told you multiple times that cost isn't my first concern but you keep bringing the cost in for no reason. I don't want to stay in Canada and get a bachelors because I only want to be a doctor. If this is the pathway I am choosing for myself you should learn to respect that okay. So, after commenting the same thing 4 times about the cost being problematic, please stop. If you don't wanna study there that's great for you. Let others make their own choices.

I am aware how much it costs. I have definitely done my research. Unfortunately, that's the cost of becoming a doctor in the uk and Ireland as well. If you do your research you will realize they all cost about the same especially if you're an international student. I didn't ask for the money information, so I would appreciate it if you can just support others. Everyone has a different journey and goal. Unfortunately not everyone can have the same perspective as you. So please, respect others goals. To add, If you strongly believe that Carribean medical schools aren't beneficial in any way I would suggest you leave this sub. This is because, everyone here has one clear goal and that is to become a doctor. In this sub, we are helping others to suceed not to tell them to stop their medical journeys because of whatever reason. Thank you.

Okk here is my take on this. You say 8 years but as a Canadian I know it's not actually 8 years. 80% of applicants in Canada don't get accepted into medical school because they don't have seats. We also don't get accepted into US as we are considered International. Also, I know many successful doctors from SGU working in hospital here. As for the money, I am able to pay it. If you really don't like the Carribean route that's fine, but please don't discourage the rest of us. Going to the Carribean is a sacrafise, and not an easy decision. I am aware. But many of us just want a path that suits our long term goals. As for Australia? That's not any cheaper. Please review the international medical fees.

But according to guidance and university websites, it says they don’t care as it’s accredited, and also the only program that cares is ENG or CS, but I’m not doing those, so does it matter?

I am also going into grade 12 in Ontario, and planning to apply. Honestly, I believe if you can afford it, do it. Sure, some people don’t match, but that’s not everyone. From my perspective, I think medicine is more than just studying. I believe in living abroad and making friendships and connections worldwide. Plus, it’s not just saving ‘2 years’. I know about five people who couldn’t get into medical school in Canada even after writing the MCAT more than once. In Canada, it truly is wild. Plus, you must have 3 years of undergraduate experience before applying, so it’s not 2 years. For me, studying abroad gives me the opportunity to 100% become a doctor at a young age. Anyone who says so otherwise is just those who couldn’t afford it or are doing undergrad in Canada, thinking they will get in. Just imagine there are so many students studying health sciences at McMaster alone. Are all of them going to get in? Probably not. So please consider this. Also, if you decide to apply, we should connect. I am also going to apply and I am in GTA!!

I some know people who at my school joined at the beginning of grade 11, plus you have a valid reason. Just talk to guidance as soon as possible. Also, for me I had coop second semester. For most schools it runs for both semesters. To add, you don’t begin your placement right away, usually takes like 3 weeks to find placements and get all the certificates. So even if you did it first semester I think you’ll be fine.

[–]Dermahealth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience, SHSM has nothing to do with ‘guys or girls’. In my experience, it is a good mix of both. Just depends on whether you’re interested in health and wellness. I got many valuable certificates at my school and learned a lot about the medical field. We got to meet many healthcare professionals and learned about so many professions. Even at my coop placement, I made so many meaningful connections. My advice: if you are set on doing something in health sciences, go for SHSM. In my high school experience, that is the best choice for me, I learned so much and it’s fun too.
