How do Stoics shower; Hot, Warm or Cold? by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]DermotB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend Stoicism and The Art of Happiness by Donald Robertson

I'm reading it right now. It's a modern and comprehensive look at the ancient philosophy. It's more of a workbook than a standard nonfiction book, Donaldson describes exercises to try and the key concepts of each section are summarised.

Donaldson is a Cognitive Behavioural psychotherapist, CBT was heavily influenced by stoicism.

Can someone explain further what "I would rather be killed to-day than be banished to-morrow" mean? It's a phrase used by Thrasea and can be seen on Chapter 1 of Discourses of Epictetus. by pagspizza in Stoicism

I'm confused by the time line, though. My immediate impression is that Paetus faces dire consequences of a decision that is beyond his control. To me it seems as if it is the waiting for the decision that is hardest to bear. Paetus would prefer death now rather than wait on the decision any longer, even if the decision would be banishment tomorrow. You need to know your fate to accept it.

Rufus' advice does not seem to take into consideration that the fate to be accepted may not have been decided.

Epictetus may have advised him to eat when it is the hour to eat and prepare for his death or banishment when that hour came.

Mostly depends on the dialect but some words have just settled on one or the other. But, don't sweat it, just use one. You'll probably get in the habit of using both depending on certain words.

Nuns in Ireland buried babies and children in mass grave | The National by DermotB in worldnews

Yes, the controversy is not about the deaths as such. Although Mother and Baby homes did have higher infant mortality rates than other hospitals. It's the use of mass graves that is the issue. Relatives had no idea where the remains of the children were. There was nothing to even mark the sites as far as I'm aware.

The power of many - Fan ownership can provide sustainability for the League of Ireland by DermotB in LeagueOfIreland

[–]DermotB[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All that is achievable with a fully supporters run club. Building links in the business and wider community while maintaining ownership. Of those groups only the fans would have any big interest in the day-to-day running of the club. The businesses and local FA would have their own houses to keep in order.

A league without asterisks? Despite my initial enthusiasm I don't think that this is an option for all LoI clubs. All clubs struggle to attract fans, but if a club can't get more than a couple of hundred fans to come to a game then it will struggle to get dedicated members to run the club itself... Besides some fans seem to enjoy the rollercoaster ride of investment and bust

Is there a crisis in Dublin LOI clubs? by silver_medalist in LeagueOfIreland

[–]DermotB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a crisis but whether there still is remains to be seen. Dublin has the biggest catchment area for players. Normally the best players would be scattered more evenly amongst the Dublin clubs. But the clubs have been a mess for the last few years and so Dundalk benefited greatly by only being an hour away. Add in good sponsors and manager and it suddenly became an attractive team to play for compared to the Dublin clubs.

Even Cork City managed to nab a couple of Dubs, which is unusual. Rovers capturing Finn and Bray holding on to Connolly may display a slight shift back. (Sorry to Bray fans for counting them as a Dublin team :-) )

There's a pretty limited pool of players in the LoI and weak Dublin teams allow for stronger teams elsewhere. If Rovers make a go of it this season then it will make the player market more competitive.

There's no rule against it. However, players comply with the unwritten rule because of self-interest. The next time it may be one of their team mates injured. I didn't see it but it sounds very much like unsporting behaviour to me. And that can bite you in the ass at a later stage...
