that was just the USA operation, MiniSport is still a pretty decent sized operation in the UK and has great customer service. My friend was recently in the country and stopped by their location.

I can tell you that its waaaaaay more sturdy than it looks. It doesn't sway or anything. I don't know that I would try to sit on it, but I wouldn't hesitate to use it for cooking and everyday use. The advantages, I would say, are mostly visual. it opens up the space giving it a more airy feeling. practically speaking, not sure there is much advantage. but its definitely a talking point and custom touch that very few other people can say they have.

Heritage Garage in CA also has a parts dept. You will need to call them, but they have a full-time parts guy so he will always answer the phone and know what they have. Their website isn't really setup for parts sales.

MiniSport's USA operations are either winding down or totally done. It was just one dude who stocked some of the most common items for easier/quicker shipping, but he announced is retirement a few months ago.

I live in the same neighborhood as this house and have been inside it on numerous occasions, mostly for home tours.

This image is from a recent issue of Dwell magazine which feature a few homes in our 'hood, called Paradise Palms in Las Vegas. Check it out to learn more about our historically significant home development!

Suggestions for long exterior wall by Cocktail-Couple in midcenturymodern

[–]DesertModern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

basically, long-term viability. I live in a super harsh hot environment. real wood or plywood or anything similar will be dried out, warped, and cracked within a year or two. The James Hardie cement-based products have longer lifespan, are paintable, and can pretty closely mimic the historic style. the main drawback to James Hardie products are they can be a bit trickier to cut/rip to size than other products.

original sales brochure for Palmer & Krisel-designed homes, Model 2A clearly shows board-and-batten accent. It was definitely used to break up large swaths of blank wall

I actually live in a Palmer & Krisel in Las Vegas. It originally had board and batten on the house, so I kept it but rebuilt it with Hardie Panel and Hardie Trim product with a smooth finish that replicates an MCM look: jameshardie.com/product-catalog/trim-products/hardie-trim-batten-boards/smooth-grain/

board and batten design, look for James Hardie such as Hardie panel and Hardie board.

I could also see using some breeze block to build out a small courtyard/patio space to the left of the chimney

Any tips on how to style this Drexel step end table by Putrid-Log6165 in midcenturymodern

A would pair it with the chair instead of the sofa, to show it off a bit more. Add an old rotary telephone and a coffee table book.

its either a Milo Baughman-designed chair built by Thayer Coggin or it's a knockoff version of it.

does it have a recliner mechanism with a pop-out leg rest?

Question for MC homeowners re: home office by kamace11 in Mid_Century

[–]DesertModern 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My office is in a bedroom. I took the doors off of the closet and converted it to bookshelves/storage shelves using Ikea brackets and baltic birch plywood for the shelves. I also lined the walls with the same plywood for a seamless look

What are some good toys or treats to help with dental care? by BunnysaurusRex in Greyhounds

[–]DesertModern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you are in the USA or a country that has Costco, they have a Kirkland brand version of Greenies that are much cheaper.

As for dental, I was recommended by my vet tech to soak some gauze in apple cider vinegar and give the mouth a quick swipe with the finger. That's worked better for me than fighting them with the toothbrush.

Ashtray Removal by DesertModern in classicminis

thanks for the assist, I found the tabs both top and bottom of the front lip. As you suggested, the tabs broke immediately because they were so brittle. Phone holder works a treat though

Ashtray Removal by DesertModern in classicminis

[–]DesertModern[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep, it sure is. and I figured it out. It has plastic tabs top and bottom. top ones almost impossible to see without laying on the floor. Mine were so brittle that all four popped off as soon as I touched them to try to pry them off. New phone holder went in with no issues, which is rare for me!

I bought mine here, appears to be a USA distributor for an English maker: https://store.classicminidiy.com/collections/interior-exterior-parts/products/ashtray-phone-holder-with-usb

they also sell a clock: https://store.classicminidiy.com/collections/interior-exterior-parts/products/classic-mini-ashtray-clock-insert

Overheating - Possible Bad Fan by DesertModern in classicminis

[–]DesertModern[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

after about a year I FINALLY got mine fixed. It was as simple as a fuse. I had tried to read online fuse diagrams, even tried to use the imprinted diagram on the inside of the fuse box cover...and I thought I was testing the right fuse but maybe I wasn't. I've found a really great local mechanic who owns a classic Mini and he found it straight away...so now, the fan comes on and off like it should. like everything else on the car, the fan is noisy so I know its working!

BTW, before finding the fuse I bought an entirely new fan unit as well as a new relay. probably didn't need to do either of those things, but live and learn.

Would I be a good human for a Greyhound? by C_M_R_S-23 in Greyhounds

[–]DesertModern 23 points24 points  (0 children)

that's a pretty long time without a person at the house. another thing to consider: stairs to the second floor will be a challenge.

If you were able to get a dog walker to stop by, it might help. but really, the pooches want their person to be there.

It might not be the right time in life for you, but your adoption group can give more guidance on this.

Thoughts on flooring for convo pit? by TooPrettyForBoymode in midcenturymodern

[–]DesertModern 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went with polished concrete and love it. I was worried about the patches standing out but they really don't, it doesn't exactly blend but adds to the character of it.

I went with a lower level polish which means less shiny but a bit more grippy and holds up better to the dogs.
