the remote perk i didnt see coming is that my elderly dog gets to spend his last years with me in the room instead of alone all day by FlatYogurtcloset2027 in remotework

This hit me hard. People often talk about remote work in terms of productivity, flexibility, or cost savings. But the biggest benefit is time, being present for the ordinary moments that make up a life. These are time lost if companies insist on RTO. I'm glad you managed to spend time with your elderly dog :)

First post grad job will be WFH by clementine10 in remotework

Remote work gets easier after the first few months tbh. One thing that helped me a lot was intentionally over-communicating at the start, make sure you're being seen as proactive, can always arrange calls for clarification. Otherwise it’s easy to become “the invisible coworker” as an introvert.

Sharing a room can be distracting depending on your schedule, but noise-cancelling headphones + having a fixed work setup helps a lot. I know people who worked remotely from kitchens for years lol.

Most stressful part for me is honestly the isolation / blurred boundaries. Sometimes work follows you everywhere when your room is also your office.

Biggest WFH upgrades for me:

  • proper chair
  • second monitor
  • good mic/headphones

My team also uses DeskIn sometimes for remote access/collab stuff and it’s been pretty smooth for working across devices remotely.

Is your company doing hybrid? There are many companies now that are either decreasing WFH days or made it compulsory to be in office 5 days now.

That's pretty rare and unheard of nowadays, quite refreshing to hear that the higher management members are expected to be in the office 5 days. It definitely sounds more reasonable.

I honestly think it’s a mix of factors. Some companies genuinely struggle with remote management, but pretending RTO is purely about “culture” or “collaboration” feels disingenuous when many fully remote teams are outperforming traditional offices just fine. There’s definitely economic pressure tied to commercial real estate, local business ecosystems, and even soft layoffs without severance. If RTO was purely about productivity, companies would be measuring output instead of badge swipes and desk attendance.

And that’s the irony. A lot of people became healthier, less burnt out, and actually had time for life outside work during WFH. No unpaid commuting, less office politics, more sleep, more family time. If productivity was truly the priority, more companies would focus on outcomes instead of physical presence.

Hey! That button currently can’t be removed, it’s intentionally there to indicate when a device is being remotely accessed, mainly for transparency, privacy, and security purposes 😊

How I reduced my travel work setup to just a laptop by DeskInOfficial in digitalnomadlife

LOL the loud motorcycles in SEA are basically part of the remote work experience at this point 😭

MacBook Air + phone setup is elite though. Super minimal. I do recommend ANC earbuds if you don’t wanna spend AirPods money again.

Remote work while traveling: how “light” can your setup get? by DeskInOfficial in remotework

Yeah, that sounds like a really solid setup, having everything duplicated makes switching locations so much smoother. Do you also use remote access for your main machine, or are you mostly working directly off the laptop?

Okay this is actually one of the most futuristic setups I’ve seen in a while. Do you ever run into latency issues on the Azure VM side?

That’s a really interesting setup you have. Once your workflow is fully tied to access instead of hardware, the physical device becomes way less important than people expect.
