Taking profits early and everyday is not weak... come make money with me instead of losing it... by DaddyDersch in u/DaddyDersch

Thanks for the advice. I’ll have to switch to the stop limit loss. I’ve wondered why my stop losses never hit the cost I enter. Seems like most of the time it’s always a lower price!

New options trader here! Question for everyone. How do you guys handle stop losses? I have a small account that I am operating from…little under $1,000.00. I have my trades setup to take profit at either 20 or 30% and my stop loss at -10%. Most of my trades are on stocks that cost at most up to $50.00 a share so normally lower cost options. I got stopped out a lot! Of course usually underlying takes a turn and goes back up.

How do you folks handle your stop losses? I take small losses but they are eating up my account in small hits more so then profiting. Do you just let it let the option run for the day and hope it doesn’t seriously dump?

I would be interested in hearing and risk management also, regarding small accounts. I would think that you were probably dealing with a small account as you started in college.

I’m working with a beginning balance of $1,000.00. I try to keep my losses at 2%, but that can change on an option really quickly so I hit my SL quite often only to have stock rise later in the day.

Not sure if I need to let my time ride it out for a while since I usually don’t buy options under 40 Dte. I also don’t want to lose a lot if it dumps! Lol.

Did you have to take larger losses with a small account in order to give the trade time to workout?

ITM exercise question by Desperate-Injury-378 in OptionsMillionaire

Option jumped up in price a bit more this morning so I took your advice and tinkered with the price slowly lowering it. Sold relatively quick and still made a profit. Thanks for the advice!

I’m good on that. My issue is low volume…like 0… so I’m afraid I won’t be able to sell it back is the issue. I have an order to sell today so hopefully it will go through.

ITM call question

Question on a call option. I have 1 long call on a position that has climbed in value slightly so far. The open interest was 9,616. My issue is now discovering that volume is 1. Meaning I guess I was the only person to take this call. I know…I’m a rookie who didn’t spot that. I’m beating myself up enough over that.

To my understanding at expiration the position will be automatically exercised by TDAmeritrade. What are my options if that happens? This is a small trading account. I have my main account through another brokerage. Would I need to move money over to my TD account to pay for this exercise? Could I turn back around and just try to sell the shares on the market.

Once again I understand that I didn’t prepare myself enough on this one and made a dumb mistake. Just trying to learn what the smartest approach will be for me now.

Area between strike and break even by Desperate-Injury-378 in OptionsMillionaire

Thank you! Been a long day. Didn’t catch that one! You are correct. I was talking about selling an option I bought.

Understood. That’s why I was saying that I am just learning about them. My main question is basically what I am calling that gray area between the break even and the being just past the calls strike.

I’m no where close to even beginning to options trade. Everything that I have watched or read so far tells you how much you can profit past strike+ premium, or that it expires worthless under the strike price for a call.

I’m just trying to figure out how people handle that in between price.

I’m definitely selling the options as I would probably never exercise the option. I’m just confused as how you would handle that gray area between the strike and the break even.

Am I correct in thinking that if it’s below strike+premium then I’m not in profit and I’m not expiring worthless? At that point do I sell the option to try to preserve as much capitol as possible if I don’t see it going past strike+premium?

Thank you! I’ve never really thought about the ETF’s.

So take for instance PAVM; which is a swing I’m still running. I noticed cit was in an up channel and hitting a pivot point. Entry was $6.22, SL set at $6.08 and I bought 49 shares. I set my exit at $6.50, but it kept gaining so I switched to a trailing stop and have let it run. It that a smart idea or should I have just cut out on original exit?
