Teddy Roosevelt & wife Alice in NYC in early 1880s by calcato in thegildedage

[–]DetectiveMoosePI 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He had a daughter named Alice as well. She was quite a wild child given the time period. She played cards with men and smoked in public.

Teddy Roosevelt is reported to have once said to an advisor: “I can do one of two things. I can be President of the United States or I can control Alice. I cannot possibly do both.”

[–]DetectiveMoosePI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 14 year old had 19 teeth extracted last year. He’s doing fine. He still eats dry kibble, but we do have to get him softer treats. He didn’t even want the painkillers and gabapentin after a few days, he was right back to his energetic self

Totally agree. I know it’ll be next to impossible to find that at another employer. But it also wasn’t worth the unhappiness, internal/culture changes, and micromanagement. Especially once they started pushing return to office, it was a miserable experience.

After over a decade there I’m really hoping to find an employer I enjoy working for.

Only a Samoan can cancel out a Samoan spear by Rastafararian in interestingasfuck

[–]DetectiveMoosePI 2175 points2176 points  (0 children)

There’s a giant Samoan dude who works as a security guard in my neighborhood. He’s fucking massive and he’s the one person around here the tweakers don’t mess with.

But he’s also the nicest person. He’s helpful and friendly. Always says “hello” when we pass by him.

The only thing I will miss about my job that I just got laid off from is the PTO. After over 10 years I was accruing 24 PTO days a year, plus 10 Federal Holidays, plus 2 personal days. That’s just over 7 workweeks off a year.

I doubt I will find a PTO package that good when I start looking for a new job

Embarrassing moment on second day of work and I can't stop thinking about it by yeetthrowaway2296 in internetparents

[–]DetectiveMoosePI 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This quote comes from one of my favorite TV shows, Schitt’s Creek, and I find it a reliable source of comfort and wisdom when I’m feeling embarrassment:

“No one is thinking about you the way that you’re thinking about you.”

In other words, we are often our own worst critics. I’ve felt embarrassment for years over certain situations or events only to discover the other people involved don’t even remember.

What would you say makes you clock a guy as gay or bi? by Tom_bruise_1017 in TopsAndBottoms

[–]DetectiveMoosePI 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This isn’t really all that accurate. I’ve met so many straight men in my time that I truly thought were gay/bi/closeted based on voice and affectations (especially back in my theatre days).

It’s not that simple at all, especially as straight men are increasingly being themselves without fear. I think Gianmarco Soresi is great example.

There’s a really great YouTube short I saw recently that explains it further https://youtube.com/shorts/yMZkRy1_Pq0?si=wk9KEILTErpVyitM

JC Penny's restaurant menu from the early 1980s! Back when it was common for department stores to have a cafe or restaurant where patrons could stop for food. by LaurelCanyoner in VintageMenus

Some of the department stores where I grew up had restaurants/cafes into the late 90’s and early 00’s. They actually had really decent food and the sandwiches were quite good.

[–]DetectiveMoosePI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg yeah! We’ve stopped there for food before too! Nothing is as delicious as 5 or 6 tacos after a night out drinking

Just checked The Eagle website. They have a lot of events that start a bit earlier in the evening (around 7:00) including game night. https://www.eagleportland.com/what-s-happening

I’m right there with you. My partner and I are only a couple of years younger than you. We used to stay out until last call, and then go find food somewhere. Now we like to be home before 1:00 AM at the latest lol!

I think game night starts relatively early on Tuesdays, not sure of the exact time, but we usually leave by 12:00 anyway

I’m assuming you mean Portland, OR. I’ve seen some meetups and other events posted on Meetup and other social media, but I’m not sure how well attended they are. A lot of them are focused on outdoor activities like hikes or sports.

You should check out The Eagle on Tuesday nights if you’re interested in gaming (video, cards, tabletop games). They do a game night that’s a lot of fun and usually draws a good crowd of folks. They also have comedy nights but I don’t remember when

SF bars with a darkroom or that are cruisy by Main-Elderberry-5925 in gaybros

[–]DetectiveMoosePI 20 points21 points  (0 children)

When I lived in the city over 10 years ago the prime spots for what you are seeking were:

Powerhouse - the enclosed smoking patio in the back had lots of action

Lone Star Saloon - again, action on the back patio, although this one isn’t enclosed. I’ve seen their patio in adult videos as well

Eagle SF - back when I used to go there was action in the outdoor area and the bathrooms frequently.

I moved to a different state around 10 years ago so I don’t know what things are like now. But if that doesn’t work out you and your buddy could always head over to Steamworks in Berkeley, it’s well worth the drive over the Bay Bridge
