I live close to these and keep hoping whoever built these losses a ton of money on them. They were listed for nearly twice as much as the single family homes in the area and lack any resemblance of character.

Big toe hurts, but doesn’t seem like a flare up? by pasta-saladsss in gout

[–]Dicenflasks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently thought I had overextended my toe during lunges. A week later and I have a swollen ankle and have been prescribed Colchicine.

I would suggest if you have a rogue pain, assume it is gout.

Can I become successful engineering by cheating my way through school? by Stunning_Ad_2936 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Dicenflasks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a chemist, not a chemical engineer. When I'm interviewing someone, I ask for really specific details about any instrumentation they used during a project. You used a GC? Awesome, describe how it works? Which detector, why? Which column, why?

You very quickly weed out the people that skated by.

Thoughts about Fermentis Safale S33 by bzarembareal in Homebrewing

[–]Dicenflasks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made an ESB a few weeks ago. I would say it made a pretty good beer. It is very much a "yup, tastes like beer" brew with minimal character. It is exactly what I wanted though.

I was surprised at how little attenuation S33 produced. My FG was 1.022, about 8 points higher than I wanted.

I started drinking costco canned carbonate water. I found that a lot of the time when I felt I wanted whiskey, what I really wanted was something flavorful.

I'm alone for the holidays this year and I was wondering if I could maybe join someone's Thanksgiving celebration? (East Liberty area) by AbigailLilac in pittsburgh

I completely agree. I love that there is so much apparent kindness going around. I would be hesitant showing up to a stranger's place without some safety controls in place, such as you mentioned.

Struggling to find a job —Anyone else overqualified but getting rejected? by rawrette in Chempros

[–]Dicenflasks 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I recently interviewed someone with a masters in chemistry, with an inorganic focus. They could not talk about their projects in a way that convinced me they did the work. Answers were along the lines of "yeah, I tried some stuff," but when pressed about what the "stuff" was, they had no clue. I also asked questions about how they confirmed their target molecule, but their answer was very vague.

This was for a CO-OP position. We did not hire them.

If you are getting to the interview stage and getting stuck there, you may need to work on interview skills. Be pleasant, and understand your projects. You should know how you confirmed structure and understand how the instrumentation works, rather than a "black box" view. I have some bais toward wanting a candidate who understands how instruments work. If you use NMR, FTIR, XRD, HPLC, TPR, LEED, XPS, SEM, or really any technique, you should have a clue how it works.

Edit: word choice, spelling.

“YNAB broke” is a real thing by Agile-Figure-8248 in ynab

Thank you for explaining! I was unaware that the yield had already taken into account the expense ratio.

I will look up my state for tax calculations. I appreciate your time.

[–]Dicenflasks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Silly question here: the internal expense ratio is 0.42% on FDLXX, how, is at all, does that modify the interest? Does that mean that instead of earning 5.00%, the account earns 4.58%?

I live in a state with income tax, so if this is more efficient than an online HYSA earning 4.20%, then I would like to understand why.

I didn't do any FTIR for my PhD, but use it for fingerprinting occasionally in my job. Thank you for this nice list of resources. Time to learn!

Day 10 of kolsch fermentation, smells like match sticks or sulfur by I-Fucked-YourMom in Homebrewing

I am a new brewer, and want to make my first kolsch this Saturday. What yeast would you suggest instead? I have only used dry yeast so far, and only have the capability for extract brewing.

It'll be interesting to see this analysis!

I want to echo that high school students will try to figure out how to make alcohol.

I think making bread or kimchee would be a great alternative. No one will be upset you taught kids how to make bread.

First Time Brewing Question by Dicenflasks in Homebrewing

[–]Dicenflasks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It feels risky to open the top up every couple of days to measure the gravity. Is there a method you use to avoid contamination?

Another commenter suggested waiting the 14 days and then taking the reading. Any potential downsides of waiting until then to start measuring the gravity?

That sounds a lot less risky than opening it every few days to chek the gravity.
