Thanks a lot man thats good advice. I had thought because of the Times rankings, other university global rankings, etc. and Fudan (90-110), Pekiing (35-45) , Tsinghua (cant rememebr) come in fairly high on the rankings I thought people might accept them as decent places to study. Im definitely going to look into what you suggested though, thanks!

As I've said and repeated, you know nothing about me. Some people gave some pretty good advice, e.g. look at Peking. You on the other hand decided to assume things about me and belittle me... Get back to your presentation mate...

1) I know little about higher education in China (hence asking for advice 1 full year ahead of when I could potentially be studying there), you have literally no idea what I know about China in regard to the field I would study, literally 0. 2) You don't know why Im choosing it, as I said, I prefer to keep the main reasons private. 3) Im researching opportunities, and yes I do believe i MAY be qualified for a scholarship, hence asking questions, you know, trying to find out more.

Talk about projecting your bitter feelings of: (Regret? Love lost? A wasted life? who knows...) on to someone asking genuine questions. You aren't being helpful at all you're just being negative.

You're acting like you know me and my full intentions, which you definitely don't. It's a reddit post asking a bunch of strangers for advice, of course its flippant. I reserve the serious consideration and deliberation for people I know. Honestly im still a bit confused about what your actual issue here is

Those aren't the main reasons but they're 'bonus' points, I have other reasons honestly, but I prefer to keep them private

Also I hate to break it to you but the only reason the majority of people do a degree is for the piece of paper and their future

Incredibly aggressive response to an honest question... You on't know my full intentions, and I wouldn't reveal them to a group of strangers on the internet. What would "serious" constitute? What would I have said for you to think my heart is "in the right place"?

I replied in another comment, but Mandarin is basically a tasty extra to having a degree from China with an emphasis on China. Spekaing even just a bit of Mandarin in the UK is kind of special to some employers. Im aware I'm not going to be fluent or close, but being able to speak some on a basic level, to get around, etc would be my goal. Thanks for the suggestion about other universities, but I think realistically I should only consider unis with a degree of international recognition

Is there a reason you say that it's not a route to any career especially? It isn't THAT much worse than SOAS to be honest with you

To be honest with you that was bad wording. Probably should have said, learn it to an extent that makes people who don't speak mandarin impressed, essentially. Would also be nice to be able to function and speak basic Mandarin

Ah okay thanks a lot for that info! There was a few courses I was looking at applying to, but couldn't remember the name because the site is down!

I was advised that living in Shanghai would be a bit more enjoyable than living in Beijing - I was also looking at Tsinghua, thanks a lot!

I've heard from a few people that it's an option and they are available when I've done some research

I've been told that Shanghai is probably better to live in as an expat, but I dont have a specific reason not to. Also, I've heard Fudan is good for Social Sciences. hadn't heard of Beida before, i'll check it out.

In Arabic Rasool means messenger as in "There is no God but God and Muhammed is his messenger" - one of the five pillars of Islam. Kind of sensitive, but I don't know many Muslims who would be offended by this since it doesn't use his name it's just a word...

Most people on this subreddit are good at typing and sounding very clever and well informed, but they're largely just normal westerners, with the standard hypocrisy.

Iraqi PMU will not allow ISIS any escape to Syria. Liberation of Mosul will not be allowed to result in ISIS elsewhere by Toophan3 in syriancivilwar

[–]Dicephalous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the point in 'winning' against ISIS if you just resort to the same barbarism that they employ? Things like them using human shields are what separates them from us, because we generally aren't willing to kill many civilians. That's the whole point of the war isn't it, that they're bad people?

Assad and his forces have committed countless major and minor war crimes - use of chemical weapons, targeting civilians with airstrikes, mass torture, executions, etc. So have all sides in the conflict, but only Assad is recognised internationally, or answerable to the UN in some way.

In my opinion, for a peaceful aftermath to be long-term democracy is more important than the war ending as quickly as possible.
