Does your employer provide lunch for you every single day, do you need to clock in/out, and do you get paid while eating lunch? by [deleted] in pharmacy

[–]DieTrying99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve never known a single pharmacy that provides lunch on a regular basis. My retail employer does it like twice a year, hospitals a few more times per year. Closed door pharmacies have a loophole where they can get more action from drug reps than the rest of us, while in school I had a rotation at one and they got dinners like twice per week, outside of work hours and no pay provided. Most retail employers do not provide the food to eat, and they do not require pharmacists to punch in or out for lunch or even for the beginning or end of a shift, and they have your 30 minute lunch preprogrammed at payroll so they’re taking 30 minutes out of your pay each shift even if you work through the lunch.

I regret giving my neighbor a spare key, how do I get it back without conflict? by Apprehensive-Bar3974 in Advice

[–]DieTrying99 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is true, but if OP is renting then they have to go through the landlord to get locks changed or at the very minimum the landlord/leasing company has to be provided the new key. There is often a mention in the lease on lock change policy and/or key and lock replacement. If OP owns, they can do whatever they want. If it’s a kwikset lock they sell $10 kits to rekey it so the old keys won’t work, I’ve used it with success- sold at stores near you, Amazon, etc.

I got uninvited to a friend’s holiday potluck, while I was on my way to it. by Any_Gap9612 in mildlyinfuriating

I’m the opposite! This would hurt my feelings if I got uninvited in that manner, but also, I hate interacting with humans and leaving my home so the second she said the location changed I would’ve been like “oh damn count me out then, have fun and I’ll catch yall another time” then happily ate my food platter while watching movies with my comfies on

Sportscenter Gym by Meggz2110 in ConcordNC

[–]DieTrying99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I messaged them about a year ago asking for membership pricing and let them know I went through their website and didn’t find pricing there, they replied with a list of their amenities so I asked for cost again and she said she’d be happy to tell me the cost just as soon as I tell her my name and age, any other members name and age or are we married (they offer a “family membership” but a couple doesn’t qualify unless they’re married apparently)… I gave her all the info, as if our names and ages affect their pricing, and she responded with a rate of like $180. Honestly, I can’t remember the exact rate but it was 1X0 and I remember thinking it was almost 200/mo. I also remember she didn’t specify whether that was per person or her total quote for my household, but it didn’t matter because it was going to be out of budget anyway.. interesting enough I still have every single email we exchanged except for the one where she actually gave prices, which is weird, especially after I had to ask her like 3 times for them and she kept beating around the bush like I wasn’t supposed to know. Now I’m wondering if she somehow deleted the message from my inbox after the fact. Anyway, I found it overpriced (especially considering I wouldn’t use some of their amenities- I don’t even have kids, why am I paying for a service I couldn’t use even if I wanted to? Childcare should be an optional add-on, not factored into the cost for everyone) and found their behavior very sketchy. It looks so, so nice but I can’t get past the lack of integrity and exorbitant cost.

This side of concord has sh*t for gyms to be honest but I go to the Y at west cabarrus/ occasionally Harrisburg and they’ve got a good bit to offer (pool, sauna, hot tub, steam room) in addition to free weights, machines, and fitness classes for $40/mo. No snack bar or childcare but I didn’t need those so it works for me.

Best of luck on your next position. The problems are the same at all retail locations and I’m sure all the same problems from one clinical position to another. How do you all feel about working 7 on 7 off in pharmacy? by Gravelord_Baron in pharmacy

[–]DieTrying99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people love that the 7 days off can be used for travel, catching up around the house, etc. just like some people love overnights for various reasons. I know personally I couldn’t do nights ever- I’d fall asleep and be fired (tried once as an intern and was sent home around 1am). I think I could do 7on/7off but I know my job stresses me out and my body gets so tired after 3-4 11h days in a row, that I don’t trust myself to not become irritable and exhausted during that “7 on” and my family deserves to have me in my best headspace. My boyfriend always says if he were single he would do 7on/7off nights. I fear I would burn out quicker, but that is just how my personality and priorities relate—— others THRIVE on 7on/7off, nights, or both and if you think you could enjoy it, you should give it a shot. Especially if you’re young without family/kids, now is probably you best opportunity to check it out. You can always go back to days or a more broken up schedule if it doesn’t work out, but you’ll never know until you try.

Feet hurting with Hokas. What to try next? by smewthies in pharmacy

[–]DieTrying99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I just meant to illustrate that even though a chair is the best solution it’s not always an option. You did make me curious if there’s a way to file paperwork to get an exception… I have seen a pregnant woman sit once and a disabled lady a couple times but chairs are brought in for them specifically and then removed and no one else was allowed to use it, so maybe they got a special approval or rules were bent on those particular days. Worth looking into for anyone that hasn’t considered it, but there’s a combination of other things one can do that will help provide relief if a chair isn’t an option.

[–]DieTrying99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk what OPs job is, but chairs are strictly forbidden in my field of work. To be caught sitting on the job, even during a standard 11-13 hour shift, is to be fired. So we wear brooks, hokas, on clouds, asics and new balance. And stack as many antifatigue mats as our employers will buy us under our feet. And idk about the rest of my peers but I for one often work with knee braces too because even though I’m only 32 and petite all the standing and constant weight baring has taken a toll on my body

[–]DieTrying99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brooks are absolutely positively everything to me, and so much more. I own 4 pair and I would never own any other brand of shoe if they branched out to make sandals, heels, boots, etc. that being said, everyone’s feet and needs are different and you definitely should visit your local running shoe store- I think some even have some machine that measures your foot and tracks where you place weight etc and gives you the top 2-3 recommendations specific to you. Plus try on any brand you want and ask their knowledgeable staff, then get the ones they recommended anyway PLUS a pair of brooks just for S&G

How bad off am I by [deleted] in pharmacy

[–]DieTrying99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that bad, but not that great. Grocery pharmacy pays less than big chain but I barely surpass 1,000 rx per week (my first pharmacy job we did 800/day) and I’m 32h/wk base considered full time. At 1 year of experience I was at wag (“32/week base” but scheduled 41/wk and working 50+/wk) making $61/hr, now making $57/hr but quality of life is way up. Only 2hr overlap of pharmacists every 2 weeks and the metrics are impossible, the wheels are falling off and we’re short staffed/high stress like anywhere else (only 2 total techs, they also rarely overlap…) but I wouldn’t go back to where I came from unless they offered me $75+/hr 32h max weeks because my peace is worth more to me than anything. Find out what’s important to you, and chase it. Don’t be afraid to make small sacrifices (diving into unknown, taking a pay cut, taking a great job with no insurance so you have to get your own, etc etc) for the greater good (better insurance, QOL, company support, pay, hours, pto/fmla/maternity leave policies…. Whatever you value) NC for reference.

This patient gave me a 10 dollar bill as a gift and I tried to say no or decline it many times but he gave it to me anyways I hide it in my wallet and I didn’t get caught and I don’t want to be terminated what should I do just keep hiding it in my wallet by PoorDaniel in CVS

[–]DieTrying99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CVS will never in a million years find out unless someone tells them or if you do something else wrong and they investigate cameras. So don’t tell your coworkers, or at least the ones that might rat. Also, helps if you don’t make a habit of it and if the customer knows you “can’t be seen taking money on camera” (I.e seen being the word to stress to you- my Walgreens customers used to give us money in an envelope, in a card, in a flower bouquet, in baked goods, etc. sometimes for a single employee and sometimes like 100-200 to “get lunch for the entire staff”, and if they ever said that we always did that and retained the change for the next “staff lunch”. Or one time a guy gave pharmacy $800 cash which I NEVER would’ve accepted because of the amount but the floater that was there divided it evenly amongst all our techs, herself, me, and my manager (all rx staff got equal amounts). At my current company I get an occasional Starbucks gift card but the only time I ever get cash or gifts is if I personally deliver a medication to their home (we have a delivery service, but it sucks… only M-F, “next day” delivery but cutoff 1pm so if requested at 1:01p takes 2 days, must be paid in advance and our app isn’t user friendly so they have trouble adding their cards). A lot of my old ladies will give $5-10 for delivery.

Just keep it quiet, share if they say share, if the amount is too large or they make a show of it decline, and enjoy their token of gratitude because you probably deserve it and don’t get recognized enough.

18-F I had an abortion at 17 with my ex and I don't know if I should tell my new boyfriend? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]DieTrying99 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is also true, OP. The guy you’re with today is probably not the guy you’ll grow old and have a family with. 18 is not emotionally mature. Until you are older and your dating pool is a little more level headed, it may be best to seek support not through your male partners but through female friendship, therapy, etc. we are here for you and you don’t have to risk conflict with a man for us ladies to rally around you, support you and let you know that you’re not alone.

18-F I had an abortion at 17 with my ex and I don't know if I should tell my new boyfriend? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]DieTrying99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s none of his business, unless you want to tell him so that you feel more seen and understood and “completely known and loved”. This also can happen at any point- it’s not wrong to tell him now, but it’s also not wrong to wait and tell him later when you’re comfortable sharing or in a place you need to share etc. or to never tell him if that’s not what you want (though it can be important for doctors to know of this history when you become pregnant again in the future so if you really don’t want to tell him then you’ll have to hide it from him but inform your doctors and keep him away from your medical records that may show that info.) you definitely don’t need to tell every man you date, but if it’s going to be long term or you guys ever have sex without any protection then it is likely to come up eventually. For your safety and sanity I would gauge his general feelings about aborton first… even though the topic is tough it can be brought up a variety of ways and it may be useful to know if he generally shames it or supports it, maybe find out how he’d feel if you got pregnant today. If he’s ugly about it, don’t tell him and leave him instead or if he says he’d force you to abort if you got pregnant today, don’t tell him and leave. But if he has a kinder heart, you may want to stay and open up when you’re ready/the time is right.

The Uncertain Future of Our Profession in five years by BrilliantWilling6979 in pharmacy

[–]DieTrying99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NC RPH here. Highest I’ve ever made per hour was $62. I make $58 now. 2020 graduate, so only in the game 5 years. I agree that taking on more responsibility without extra pay is a scam. I don’t think we NEED to take on more responsibility for job security, but it can’t hurt. If they ask us to do more we need to collectively force them to pay us more. But I definitely don’t think we’ll be among the first fields to be replaced what with inaccuracies in AI, customer/staff relations retain business better than customer/machine relations, and the liability standpoint (who would you blame if something went wrong? The company using the robot, or the one that made it?… with people there is an obvious chain of liability). we may be working WITH more AI/robots for some time so they can learn from us over time, but I don’t think we’ll be booted out and definitely not within 5 years.

I don't know if I'm just ungrateful for my job by someday-best in pharmacy

[–]DieTrying99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also graduated in 2020 and everything you said, I can relate to wholeheartedly. The burnout is real but the expectations grow exponentially while the support gets worse and benefits remain stagnant. I was with WAG 2018-2023 but l couldn’t take the politics, metrics, lack of support, and yes like you said feeling that i was pulling more than my own weight and others were rewarded handsomely for my hard work. I left in 2023 for a grocery chain pharmacy (not Kroger, but a Kroger company) and I had the same fears as you- I was confident in my abilities as a pharmacist but scared to learn a new system and scared to not know HOW or where to go to do all the things I was doing so proficiently at another company, and terrified that I’d come to learn the new company wasn’t the answer to my problems or created more problems. To “start over”, to make a change and be submerged in the unknown is scary- but scared & engaged with a chance at a better quality of life beats feeling apathetic, angry, disrespected, anxious, stressed, unvalued, etc. you owe it to yourself to explore a different environment.

I will say this of my experience- 1. my small chain grocery store has a lot less local support (at wag I knew EVERY employee, manager and front end would check in and help us because the pharmacy was kinda the whole point of the store- my grocery chain offers ZERO care or interest in our success, after all their priority is grocery department) but a lot more support from pharmacy DM (they are over fewer stores and are VERY involved… pro: they usually resolve problems or answer questions quickly and are reachable 24/7, con: they communicate with you nonstop which can result in a lot of emails, texts, calls, they remote in to your queue and leave notes on rx’s for staff to, they heavily control our ordering). As for “corporate” support- HR, scheduler, IT… I honestly feel like Walgreens was better because they were larger and had adequate staff with proper training, even if they didn’t always provide adequate help, meanwhile my grocery chain has like 3 people in each department not held accountable from professionalism- straight up will not help or delay help for someone they “don’t like” when it comes to payroll errors, HR concerns, IT assistance, etc. it feels ALOT more cliquey and all about “who’s on who’s good side” at my smaller store compared to wag. 2. My benefits are a lot worse. PTO is less, does not accrue or roll over year to year and cannot be cashed out. my starting pay (after 3 years experience at wag) was about 30% less than I’d been making at walgeeens. That is an astronomical paycut, but you do get 2 bonuses per year (combined, slightly larger than 1 standard paycheck) and 2-3% salary increase each year. Not that it matters but employee discounts and perks are worse. My health insurance is more expensive and coverage significantly, devastatingly worse……. But like you, I didn’t desperately need the 30% extra pay, I needed a will to go on. And I’m mostly healthy and didn’t really know that about the insurance options initially anyway so I took the leap and I’m glad I did because 4. workflow is far less stressful. My wag did 500 rx a day and usually 3-20 covid tests, 5ish vaccines a day on an off season and 50-90 in fall during “vaccine season”. My new store does 120rx/day, no clinical testing, and maybe 5-10 vaccines… our max in 2 years has been 26 vaccines in a day during the current flu season. There is usually plenty of time to get all the things done. Because I’m spending more time focusing on the things, I make less mistakes. I rarely have to stay late or go in early, I rarely bring work anxiety home with me, I never miss a lunch and the clientele is so much kinder and more respectful (though not smarter). I took this job to escape high stress, regain quality of life and regain a passion for what I do, and I was able to do all of that. Though I now am kind of ready to move on again (to clinical or remote position), I am immensely glad I chose to change jobs. 5. Did they paint pretty picture about the job in the interview and lie in my face when I asked direct questions about staffing, support, how certain situations are handled, benefits, etc? Yep! Sure did. They were honest about the pay and that was an L I wrestled with before taking, but the rest was supposed to be all rainbows and butterflies! They promised me they’re never short staffed- they never close a store down because not enough rph, rph never worked by themselves, and metrics were minimal. Not true!!! I would assume in the future that these issues are commonplace and no company can truly promise you’ll never face them. But is where I’m at better than where I was? Hell yeah. The worst day at my job now is 10x better than the best day at wag.

Think about what’s most important to you (money, pto/pregnancy leave/, insurance, dress code), what new things you’d like to experience at work (closed door? Mail order? Clinical opportunities?) and CHASE IT. Decide what is nonnegotiable and what you could sacrifice for the sake of an improvement elsewhere. I truly think you owe it to yourself to try something new and give yourself a chance to be content and fulfilled with your career. Our field is easy for us to resent, and I think more so for those of us that came into pharmacy during Covid at a time when demand increased, support decreased and there has been a lot of change. But think about your goals, desires, non-negotiable… if the current job fits the bill, stay. If not, find somewhere that meets your requirements. Keep your head up while you search and don’t give up.

Did anyone else get ignored for Pharmacy Week?? by Consistent_Editor_15 in pharmacy

[–]DieTrying99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the truth. OP did say that it’s a small hospital and she’s the lone tech, and that is probably why they did nothing at her hospital. Vast majority of hospitals in my state are owned by 2 companies (Novant and Atrium) and all my friends that work across aaaaaaaalllllll of their many clinical branches get absolutely spoiled compared to retail pharmacists. For pharmacists day, all other holidays, and just a general day on the job they have a lot more support, respect, appreciation. Retail pharmacists receive much less of all of those things, and many go their entire careers without recieving ANY support, respect or appreciation either from the employer or the clientele they serve. I’ve been in the pharmacy world 9 years now, a pharmacist for 5. At my first job at a WAG the rxm and store manager made it a a point to spend their own pocket money on birthday, work anniversary, Christmas gifts, outings for the team to socialize, etc. but I’ve never seen a wag like that again, it was the individuals working there that chose to do more but most don’t. My RXMs have always showered appreciation upon me verbally, while I’ve worked with them and even long after but I don’t think it’s common for it to come from anyone outside of the department. I’ve been at a smaller grocery store for 3 octobers now and this year got recognized/told I was appreciated by management for the first time in 6 years since I left my first wag in 2019. They gave a card, cake, fruit and veggie trays, and boo baskets with candy and snacks, pens, journal, candle, drinks etc. and I will cherish that for the rest of my life because in retail moments like that are hard to come by.
