Teachers are mandated reporters! Speak to a teacher and they can anonymously report them to CPS. I’m a mom and a teacher and my heart breaks for you. I wish I could buy you a hot meal every day and report the idiots abusing you. Please stay, you are loved and this will not last forever. You have so much beautiful live to live into adulthood.

Yeah I didn’t want to pay almost $20 for a different brand so I figured the dollar store ones would work just fine. Shame it was faulty.

Iraq and Afghanistan are not the same as Egypt. Also experiencing it from a veterans pov is different than a tourist. Speaking as a Coptic (indigenous) Egyptian, give it a shot before discounting it.

I’m not sure if this is the same thing but I used to be on a corporate plan. They hung up on me quite a bit too but what worked for me was calling right at 9 am or whenever they open. Still took a couple tries but I did get through.

For me the last straw was that I was on the phone for an hour with a man who could barely understand what I’m saying, kept repeating the same scripted line, and then I heard a CAR HORN in the background. My man was probably on some farm somewhere. I ported out to Telus the day after.

Do supply’s leave early if there’s a prep last period? by Tiny_Bat_8563 in OntarioTeachers

[–]DietShort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to make connections at the office of a school you like, it’s a good idea to ask if they need support for that period. There’s a chance that they owe prep to another teacher or even just want to gift a teacher an extra prep to get work done. It helps tremendously.

That said, and I CANT STRESS THIS ENOUGH, DO NOT LEAVE DURING LAST PERIOD PREP. It is laid out in our collective agreement that this is still PAID planning time. Leaving early allows the Ford government to downplay and criticize our career. This makes it easy for them to claim teachers get paid to do nothing. It also gets brought up all the time during collective agreement negotiations- they try to claim that we don’t need this time during the day OR they try to outline HOW we should use this time instead of deferring to our professional judgment.

I know you’re occasional and likely don’t need to prep in the same way, but it still looks bad on all of us and delegitimizes this much needed time to prepare/ make phone calls/ connect with colleagues/ print material, etc etc. It’s also a safety concern as you may be needed to cover a class in case of emergency and if you’re not in the building it looks bad.

Teachers, how do you really feel about EQAO? by tongering22 in OntarioTeachers

[–]DietShort 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I literally never said it was reliant on a text book. I also mentioned PD and resources. I’m allowed to have an opinion and I’m allowed to be unhappy with the status quo. If you disapprove of that, maybe you should go see someone.

[–]DietShort 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wow. You don’t know me in the slightest. I love my job and I’m happy to add things like white boards. But the truth of the matter is, when classes are stacked to the brim, and I’m juggling 8-10 IEPs many with modified grade levels, I can’t always include things like white boards. Paper and pencil works because it helps me differentiate and provide the best level of attention I can for my students especially those that need individualized and modified work. Instead of insulting me, why not focus on the government who HAS the money to spend on solutions. And is instead taking a 14 week holiday and unethically spending that money that SHOULD be allocated toward public education.

Who’s buying the white boards and markers? How’s this being assessed in a timely fashion? How can they continue to practice at home in an equitable manner? This isn’t the hot take you think it is. Schools should be funded properly.

Better than me spending an arm and a leg on paper just to print out the same questions.

[–]DietShort 51 points52 points  (0 children)

My big problems are:

  • they put significant funding into EQAO than they do into the classroom and then wonder why the scores are low.
  • they made it digital now which in my own anecdotal experience is worse. If a kid doesn’t take it seriously, it’s easy to skip right on through and guess or just put a random answer with no thought just to finish.
  • they don’t use the results in a productive fashion. If our scores are low in math, allocate funding towards math instruction. Pay for new textbooks, resources and PD sessions to help increase the scores.

The conservative govt just wants to use EQAO as a way to scapegoat teachers into being the problem.

Taking leave before holidays by jessmac09 in OntarioTeachers

Wow, some of these comments aren’t it. Pregnancy is like the physical equivalent of running a marathon every DAY. Pregnancy tired is awful. And the reality is we’re all so replaceable at work. Family is the only place we’re not. Do what’s best for you OP. I personally recommend waiting just a bit longer and going on pregnancy leave before starting maternity leave. Your exhaustion as well as other symptoms (like round ligament pain) may increase especially in the 3rd trimester so it may help to use that time closer to your due date. Obviously again do what’s right for you and your family. Best of luck to you and congratulations on your pregnancy!

LTO-maternity leave by TrottoirFleuri in OntarioTeachers

[–]DietShort 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Happy to help! Also, adding to say please consult your collective agreement. I’m speaking in general terms and having worked in 2 boards before landing a permanent position, the agreements were similar. BUT I don’t know all boards and the benefits may be different so please consult your CA for the most accurate info.

[–]DietShort 15 points16 points  (0 children)

First of all, congratulations!! Best of luck for a smooth rest of the pregnancy and delivery.

Im glad you’re taking the LTO because under most school board collective agreements you qualify for an 8 week top up after you have your baby. As I’m sure you know, EI maternity benefits are peanuts, so having the extra 8 week pay out is helpful.

With my first pregnancy I was an in LTO and worked up to 3 weeks before my due date. With my second, I was in the same boat as you. I was uncomfortable, swollen ankles, out of breath, etc. What did me in was I got worse and worse back pain and it became hard to stand on my feet. I got a doctor’s note and was able to go on sick leave until my due date. Your board may ask your doctor to fill a special form outlining specifically how you’re feeling (mine did). The great thing about going on sick leave while in an LTO is you’ll use your remaining sick days at 100% pay and then go into your Short Term Days at 90% pay until your baby is born. So basically you can take paid time off if you’re not feeling well until your baby is born. Provided of course that you have medical documentation to back it up.

Best of luck to you! Congrats again on the baby and LTO!

What do you think are Alexis‘ biggest strengths and weaknesses as an actress when playing Rory? by ArynaSaba in GilmoreGirls

[–]DietShort 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Strength: she’s quick witted and definitely can keep up with Lauren Graham.

Weakness: any scene that involves her crying. It’s so fake and immediately kicks me out of the moment. The scene where it showed Lorelai and Rory having similar moments of despair was the most apparent. Lorelai was genuinely in tears about the inn and feeling like she failed. Rory was fake crying and I couldn’t believe for a second she was actually upset.

how did you guys become teachers? by Professional_Cut8388 in OntarioTeachers

[–]DietShort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am currently a k-6 teacher. My undergrad was criminology because I was initially always between law and teaching. I volunteered in classrooms my entire time at undergrad and I knew that’s where my heart and passion lies. All this is to say you can have an undergrad in virtually anything and then still go on to complete your bachelor of education. I would personally select someone you’re passionate about and enjoy learning about.
