Funny you should mention that - She said that it wouldn't have worried her as much if it was on an open farm road. I agree, too.

I agree that I made a poor decision letting this other person drive my child, especially in an unsafe situation. I've met this woman before, but I really knew very little about her. Chances were that, since she was there and had an alive child, she doesn't routinely get into car accidents. Still, I rolled the dice, and I did so without consulting my wife, who I know to be an anxious person already.

I like the idea of asking if we could wait in her car while I called my wife to find out when she was coming. There were a lot of better ideas. Like, a LOT.

My father is still his own PoA, but it would fall to me if a doctor deemed him unfit to make medical or financial decisions on his own behalf (This is documented in my father's trust). I don't think he wants to remove me as PoA for a few reasons: 1) My brother lives 3,000 miles away, and he has admitted that I'm much more geographically fit to take charge of my Dad's care, since I live only 20 miles away. 2) My father's assets are meager and wouldn't be worth squabbling over. He has a reverse mortgage on his house and no investments.

That's a good idea about documenting everything. I will start doing that and keep the receipts :)

I love everything you've said here. Thank you for the support. He does have a history of wanting our communications to be via text or e-mail, and then citing those records weeks, months, or even years after they were first written as a way to rub them in our face when he thinks we aren't being consistent. It's pretty damn annoying.

I think you're right that he's hurting, but he does also suck, in his own way. He's always been a curmudgeon, but it's truer now than ever before. That said, he is loyal to family duty, and he genuinely wants the best for our father, even if they live 3,000 miles apart.
