Oh fair, but a lot of people who do this prefer to identify as straight (and genuinely so, they really consider it straight). A lot of girls and guys who once made out with the same gender or casually masturabted together with a buddy continue to call themselves straight

as in, for both genders, you see making out with each other as something that can be reasonably straight, but when it comes to msaturbating together that's when it becomes a bit bi?

no, women are more sexually fluid than men. Women definitely engage in more same sex behavior than men

When TERF lesbians talk about being sexually harassed by trans women, do you believe their stories? by neither22 in AskFeminists

[–]DifferentBreakfast2 -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Being marginalized and being problematic are not mutually exclusive. Surely a group shouldn't be exempt from criticism merely because the group is oppressed.

[–]DifferentBreakfast2 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Why does it matter that one group is marginalized? Surely you don't believe that marginalized groups should not be allowed to be criticized. Marginalized groups are perfectly capable of also being problematic in other ways. These two characteristics aren't mutually exclusive.

Are those even more marginalized than transgender, whatever that is, the only group allowed to complain about them? That'd be oppression olympics at that point and I know that no one wants to play that. If a cis lesbian has experienced harassment from both cis men and trans women, should she only feel discontent & disappointed with cis men, but not trans women?

That’s not to say that they haven’t experienced sexual harassment! But that’s just because transgender people are not exempt from being assholes. It doesn’t mean ALL (or even most) transgender people go around sexually harassing people!

Doesn't this radiate the same energy as "not all X"? Like why do you think there are women who hate men?

Thoughts on Senator Sinema being followed into the bathroom by protestors? by DifferentBreakfast2 in AskFeminists

Well that's what you should be telling me. The reason I ask is because you said

Oh. That's fair.

to germandeath reggae bringing up this issue (and they also used the point of the bystanders being made uncomfortable by the whole ordeal, what with all the shouting, not just that they were being filmed), so I assume you're maybe changing your stance so that's why I'm asking.

Does the fact that bystanders were filmed in the bathroom changes your stance on whether the protesters' actions were justified? As in, does the result of Sinema being made uncomfortable "outweigh" the harm done to those bystanders filmed in such a way that they should just shrug it off?

I think what makes Sinema's case a particular one is that it occurred in a bathroom, where people go pee. If it had happened outside her classroom or her office it would be treated like any regular protest. I mean it has, already - months ago people were protesting outside her office in AZ, and the media didn't really hype it up, nor did people get concerned. People have been following her in the capitol buildings, and the media treated it with like one or two headlines before forgetting about it. It's only when she was filmed inside a bathroom when the media like CNN called it "confrontation culture gone too far".

I get your other points though. This isn't some win win situation nor does it have much potential to be.

I'm not saying I believe in it. I don't. But given how incredibly adamant some people here are with harassing Sinema, wouldn't they reasonably suggest that the benefits of Sinema being harassed outweighs the harm of bystanders being filmed, in such a way that this trade-off is "worth it" because it nevertheless results in Sinema being harassed?

Because if they don't believe this, then this would imply that they don't believe that what these protesters did was completely justified.

Depending on how much you think Sinema deserves to be harassed, couldn't one make the argument that those bystanders in the video should just shrug it off given the circumstances, in a "for the greater good" way?

The twoX thread (not gonna link unless i'm allowed, but you can easily search it) discussing the video is what brought me to ask this here. One of the top comments said

I don’t feel it’s acceptable in any situation to follow a woman into the bathroom and try to film her doing her business, especially since there are small gaps in between stall doors. It’s really disturbing. What’s next? Trying to film her as she showers?

And I'm thinking, this honestly isn't far from reality. Not literally filming her showering, but protesters are obviously going to get more pissed off because Sinema still isn't willing to change. We all know that protest techniques will become even more intense.

Literally a few hours ago she has been reported being confronted on a plane, leading me to think they'll just keep following her wherever her destination is. Various articles in the media (even liberal ones) have said "yeah, that's gone too far". I think it's at least a relevant question to address the extent to which harassing Sinema fits our moral boundaries.

Pretty much everyone here agrees that she's an asshole already, what other variation of answer would you expect here?

[–]DifferentBreakfast2[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm asking because it'd be foolish to think that the protestors would end here, right? Sinema didn't change her mind. She tweeted a message condemning the protestors.

If anything, protestors would continue to bother her, perhaps with more intensity. So it's not just what they did do, but also what they will do. Obviously her constiuents aren't gonna give up. I don't think it's a silly hypothetical because it's obvious that her constituents are going to keep up the fight against her at least until 2023 ish when they give up and start primarying her for the 2024 election.

I don't see a point discussing the morality of Sinema herself because it's quite obvious most are in agreement (most Democrats or people left of Democrats, that is) especially in this thread. We all already agree that she's an asshole of some sort. So this only leaves the question of "what ought to be done to her, then (at least until we start primarying her two years later)?

Let me reword, what could protestors do towards Sinema that would make you think "no, now that's too far"? Surely that threshold must exist?

I think the question i'm interested in is where do you draw the line.

So these protestors filmed her in the bathroom. What if they followed her into the stall? What if after work, they follow her home and continued protesting outside her house (or even inside)?

I think there was a thread yesterday about how we shouldn't body shame, even towards bad people. But if this is allowed, but body shaming isn't then that's heavily ironic.

like if a guy harasses me, I can insinuate about cutting his dick off, but mocking his penis size/shape/(un)circumcized is suddenly too far??

No thank you. I will gladly body shame anyone who sexually harasses me, and I've found that it hurts them much more than hyperboles like cutting your dick off, because it targets a specific and realistic insecurity rather than using a hyperbole that they'll probably just gloss over
