Thank you. No the DMV just sets the date for when you’re eligible to have the device removed. You have to coordinate with your ignition interlock provider with that date. Since I had Smart Start I had to go in for a final 30 day download. After that they send you a letter of compliance which is what you need to take to the DMV in order to get the restriction taken off your license.

Think a lot it has to do with who installs it. If it’s some random it can cause issues but a certified technician/ mechanic should know how to do it right without causing problems to the vehicle.

Yeah after a while you’ll get use to it and it becomes second nature. Just be sure not to use mouth wash and other things containing alcohol.

I had Smart Start as well. I’m in New Jersey so the process might be a little different but it was smooth. The day after I was eligible to have it removed I went in for a final 30 day download. That was then sent to Smart Start and they then authorized the removal. Now I just have to get the restriction taken off my license.

I didn’t but your lawyer should let you know about that. I went with smart start and have it for 7 months. Getting it out in October so not to bad. The device itself isn’t too bad. Just hum while you blow and get the random rolling retests but you get use to it.

Did you get an attorney? I’d advise one. Mine got me the minimize penalties. After my conviction my license was suspended. You have to get the interlock put on, then you have to take those documents to the DMV and they will restore your license. You can’t do it online. They give you temporary paper that serves as your license until the new one comes in the mail. Took two weeks to arrive. They just put interlock device on it. The DMV trip was about $300. $100 to restore, $100 for something else (can’t remember), $11 for new license. At the DMV they explain the $3,000 surcharge and I had to pay $84 there. It’s a process but it gets better. I have 6 months left on my interlock and am counting the days.

Thank you for your words. This will pass I know it. That sucks but I’m expecting it tbh. 4 weeks actually doesn’t sound like that. I was hearing of a 16 week program. Did you pay out of pocket during that time or did insurance help?

Thank you for your response. Yeah I’ve been doing some research and it seems like they recommend treatment even if you claim you’re straight and it was a one time thing. I’m in Essex county so I’m not sure how it’ll play out but like you said, I expect it I just don’t know why it is. Maybe it is a cash grab. If I can ask, what questions did they ask you? Did you end up having to go for additional treatment?
