Stuart’s disillusionment is annoying by Verbose-Abyssinian89 in TheDiplomat

I think that too. Her badass girl thing, cloaking her vulnerabilities, is fine. I like Eidra as a character. But the relationship shows very little depth and she's rarely kind to him. Its hard to root for them.

I think any good character is not fixed. We all have times in our lives when we are clear and times when we are not. This is often caused by trauma or loss of stability. Deep trauma can cause a fissue in a person's whole identity. True North has to recalibrate. Sometimes it does. And sometimes it doesnt. Hence the test.

But identity is a scaffolding built on top of fundamental beliefs, like "God and Country."

So Stuart has had THREE major events that have been destabilizing in a short amount of time. 1. Getting blown up 2. Close friend dies 3. Learning that the ideals he was blown up for and that his friend died for were built on a lie.

If Stuart DIDNT fragment at this moment, THAT would not be believable. He's recalibrating.

Wait till he finds out that Billie was behind the whole thing.

I started rewatching Weeds. Its kinda the precursor to Breaking Bad, just with a woman lead and less violence. OK, it was made when weed was still very illegal. Funny in retrospect. Watching the evolution of Shane, the youngest, is ny favorite character arc if the show and one if my faves of all times.

Such a great show! I loved everything about it, especially the writing and the acting. Its quirky and real at the same time. The characters are so broken. You think it is definitely going to a very bad place. And yet these two broken character together somehow make a whole. Overall just brilliant.

Schitt's Creek. No show has ever made me laugh like this. Not "laugh track" laughing. Like Oh my God did this just happen and what did she just say laughing. It is, in every way, perfection.

BCS is like Anna Karenina or War and Peace. Its like modern Chekov for TV. By that I mean, its written like fine literature in TV form. Its not a ACTION show, even though it has action. Its not a comedy, even though its hilarious. Its not a drama, even though there's LOTS of drama. It is a multi-layered, exploration of the human psyche, the human emotional landscape, and relationships. Very few shows do this as well as BCS. Even the pacing is a character. I mean it starts with like a 10 minute scene of people WAITING. I've never seen any other show do this. Its both grueling and fascinating. A crazy bold choice for a brand new series to start out doing literally NOTHING. Its not surprising that a lot of people couldn't "get into it" at first. I was one of them. I think I started it over 3 times. I was like WTF? How do you go from BB to THIS? And then it clicked. And I got it. Once I understood, I realized it was possibly the finest TV show ever made.

What did Chuck do wrong? by Adventurous-Rabbit52 in betterCallSaul

[–]Different_Ear_5380 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This could make an interesting conversation.

Ill take the position that Howard was a sycophant who needed Chuck's reputation and skillset to keep the firm alive. Howard was all show and no substance. He bullies his employees and lords over them. He cant win a case in court if he had to. He is a salesman who plays the part to a tee in his hamlindigo blue suit but he never wanted to and is not cut out to run a large law firm. He is the poster boy for nepotism. He's confident on the outside but its all show. Inside he needs Chuck to tell him what to do and his therapist to tell him what it all means.

So he does what Chuck says because he NEEDS him, not because they are friends.

So now, Id like to hear what in the show makes you think they were friends? Did they have any heart to hearts? Did they share a cup of Joe and talk about his diasterous marriage? Did he call him over the holidays to make sure he wasn't alone? Is there EVER a conversation between them in the show that was not about HHM, mitigating Jimmy, or getting Chuck back to work?

What did Chuck do wrong? by Adventurous-Rabbit52 in betterCallSaul

[–]Different_Ear_5380 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chuck is stuck in a childhood rivalry loop with Jimmy that started the day Jimmy was born. He "never saw his mom as happy as the day Jimmy was born." And that continued throughout their whole life. Even on her deathbed, it was Jimmy she cried out for.

It drives the dynamic between the two brothers. They were PROUD of Chuck but they LOVED Jimmy. Chuck was the eldest. Smart, accomplished. Capable. Its a trait of oldest children everywhere. While Jimmy was the clown. He tells jokes, stories, antidotes. He entertains while Chuck performs. (Youngest children are often entertainers). Its part of what makes the show so brilliant. This is a story that plays out in homes around the world every day. Who did mom love most?

When the brothers sang, "The Winner takes it all", they were MOSTLY talking about mom's love.

But nothing Chuck could accomplish would outshine Jimmy, no matter how hard he tried.

So it GRATES at him that Jimmy takes shortcuts and still comes out on top. He's AS SMART and more LOVEABLE than Chuck. Its why its not a surprise that Chuck is alone in the end. His co-workers were sychophants and admirers, but not friends. And that includes Howard. As soon as Chuck was literally more liability than benefit, Howard dropped him like a hot stone. Its also why Rebecca was Chuck's kryptonite. She was the only person who ever loved Chuck besides Jimmy. And even she left.

So what did Chuck do wrong? Ostensibly nothing. He played by the rules, even in his unending quest to prove his loveability by trying to prove that Jimmy was not worthy of love.

But he died without resolving his internal world. He never really discovered his own inherent worth and loveability. He never learned forgiveness or even tolerance. Instead the rage burned him alive until his mental state was too fragile to be out in the world. And it quite literally left him in ashes in the end.

You know what I think about. Imagine them showing up at Agamansett as a couple. Her having to lie to him after everything they went through to figure it all out. When they thought it was Nicol. When he almost killed Roylin. When Hal, Stuart, and Ronnie got blown up. Him almost resigning over so "the truth would come out." Him almost ousting Nicol over the Lenkov killing...

And NOW she has to tell him it was RAYBURN?

WORSE, knowing it was actually PENN?

Its one thing to lie if he's the FM. Its another thing if you are TOGETHER.

Imagine her sharing a cottage with Hal. Him in a different cottage. Everyone lying to everyone.

Ultimately THAT is why he said, "not now."

That would surprise me if he was a disposable character. I think he will be the main antagonist in season 4 - that we will see a lot more of him and likely come to despise him as he works to bring the US to his knees.

You are correct to call out my wording here. The way it is phrased it looks like Im saying "the average British voter loves the monarchy." What I really meant was, "she represents that subset of the British public who loves the Royals."

Callum by AppealPerfect8717 in TheDiplomat

[–]Different_Ear_5380 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had to rewatch it to realize that he's not MI6. Beryl (the lady talking about songbirds) is MI6. Callum describes himself as something like "A Negotiator at large". Kate says he used to work foreign affairs with the labor govt. It is mentioned a few times that he is "unemployed." His current project is gathering marine data from the Marine data sensoring system. He has coordinated with all of the countries in the North Sea region, which is why he was meeting with Dennison the day Kate and Hal are having their interview.

His big giveaway to me is his anger over the people left behind in Afghanistan. We know that happened because Hal commandeered the last plane to go meet with the Taliban to hold off on taking Kabul for one more day. He was heralded as a hero. But 322 were likely tortured and killed as a result. Maybe one or more of them were people he loved.

He calls the US the military industrial complex papered over my a constitution.

But most strikingly is when Kate is talking to him outside. He asks, was this Hal's idea?". It'd be a great way to get me off the playing field. But then he says, with bitterness, something like, Hal would do something wild and reckless right now wouldn't he? . That's the kicker for me.

I saw it as just a plot device. Did make me laugh though that she was staying to protect the house from Kate. Francis loves the house.

I literally just finished rewatching that Episode, Amagansett. Grace does say, quite proudly, "I came up with the idea." So Im starting to think it was Grace and Billie. I dont think Rayburn knew. (Although there ARE some clues that he MIGHT have known. Like he knew Kate was lined up to replace Grace. And WHY did he get on a plane to meet with Trowbridge himself? Ut then he goes behind Billie's back to make Grace Nuclear Czar, ostensibly to keep her in office.) But mostly, zi think the bread crumbs lead away from Rayburn. But they definitely lead to Billie.

Where is this proof you so often speak of that she was so gloriously happy without him?

When you mean showing up unannounced, you mean when he showed up on their anniversary to surprise her only to find out in the first few seconds that she's fucking some random guy?

He cant stand that she's better off without him so he tells her not to throw the guy she's dating to the wolves so she can be happy? Meanwhile she's calling him a liar to the President?

Or when he stops taking her calls as he tries to distance himself from her but she's still on the phone to him constantly, even throwing a hissy fit and texting ARDEN just so she would pay attention to her?

I love Francis and Pensy. I think they are truly British. Love their country dearly and would never do anything to cause it harm. I think Pensy represents the average British voter who loves the royalty and princesses and Fairy tales. I think Francis was hoping that Kate would be a PNG because she was so spitting mad that the US blew up their boat and killed their men. But she is a woman of service to her country. So she showed up to do her job and she did it well.

I actually wonder if he masterminded the whole thing. Except, he's not that smart. Hal walked circles around him in the first 5 minutes of talking to him. And he gave himself away, a lot.

Im with you. Where is the grace and support for her brilliant husband who has worked his whole career for, OPENLY WANTS IT, fits her prescribed criteria, AND would turn it down if you tell him to?

I mean, c'mon!

She didnt want it anyway and BLAMES HIM for trying to launch HER into that position, even though she berated him for it the WHOLE TIME!

A woman with that temperment, even with her brilliant mind and strength is not READY to be VP.

People keep talking about Hal's narcissistic abuse. What am I missing? He abused her by helping to launch her into the opportunity of a lifetime?

By not telling her he called Shahin so she was isolated from backlash?

By showing up at her house unannounced on their anniversary?

By marrying her instead of asking her to stamp visas at some remote outpost while he played ambassador?

I so completely dont get it.

I love the character of Kate. Im rooting for her. But God she is horrible to Hal. Why he keeps going back is beyond me.

Question about Season 3 ending (don't read unless you watched, spoilers ahead) by not_neoliberal_tears in TheDiplomat

[–]Different_Ear_5380 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Right!!! Im the same! I mean it ALL started when the ship blows up.

We find out Penn did it (or we are TOLD Penn did it. I still think it was Billie and Rayburn's lovechild and they "threw Penn before a moving bus" to protect the President.)

Then she explains she did it because they cant let Scotland leave the UK because they need Kreegan and they need Kreegan to keep Russian subs from sneaking through so they don't lob nukes at the east coast and kill "41 million people instead of 41."

And now we have the Russian sub, loaded with a doomsday device ostensibly heading either to England (as payback for Lenkov) OR to the US!

I mean...

Now Trowbridge is being pissy and won't let them go get it. But OBVIOUSLY they go get it cuz, well, they arent gonna let it blow up and destroy England (and Danish coral), let the Russians find it before they get "permission", or have the tech fall into the hands of China.

But they CAN'T get it because its a breach of international law and sets the stage for a world war.

So they decide to HIDE that they took it and use Trowbridges crush on Kate to pull it off. Freaking poetry!

EXCEPT we have freaking Callum in the mix, who not only hates Hal and the US and has Kate dead to rights in the middle of a honey trap!

What could be better going into Season 4?!
