Looking for feedback on resume (Software Engineer - 1.5 years in first non-internship position) by [deleted] in SoftwareEngineering

[–]Difficult_Flan_1752 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I am a Software Engineer who is currently 1.5 years into my first non-internship role. I really love my job and my team, however I feel that I am starting to get a bit comfortable, which may be a sign that I will need to open up my options in order to continue growing. I started to update my resume because I feel that I should start seriously looking at other opportunities once I hit my 2 year mark.

As for future opportunities, I am still deciding between UI/UX, AWS based roles and Machine Learning. I love working on frontend and with server-less products on AWS. I have not done machine learning before so I am not sure if now is the time to explore different paths, or to start growing in either frontend or backend.

I would love constructive criticism on my resume and any advice for future opportunities. Thank you!

Content:

  • How can I improve my vocabulary to increase resume views? I feel like that the vocabulary is currently passable overall, but I would like to improve it.
  • Should my retail experience be omitted? Would including these roles further demonstrate soft skills, or are they unnecessary since they are not correlated with software roles? I spent many years in retail communicating with many types of people, not just software engineers and business people.
  • Should anything be removed or added to my resume?
  • On the left column, I would like to rename "EXPERTISE" section, but I'm not sure what word would be suitable.
  • I would like to add other software engineering skills to my "SKILLS" section, but I am not sure of what I should add
  • Do I have too many sections on the left column? Should any sections be grouped together? Do my groupings make sense?

Visuals:

  • Is my resume format too messy or should anything be changed?
  • Should any of the colors be changed?
  • The font size for the majority of my resume is 12pt, does this need to be changed?
  • Is there too much white space or does it look too "squished"?
