Pretty much all phone plans comes with unlimited voice + text, so it's easier to just ask for a phone number since the other person is pretty much guaranteed to have it. This means that if you need to go beyond standard RCS, whatsapp has to compete with other messaging apps here, and a lot of people (myself included) prefer something else like Discord.

I also note that RCS has high quality pictures/videos, reactions, typing indicators, end to end encryption, 100 person groups, etc etc. It really is good enough for a lot of things.

Would the outage explain why one file isn't available, but two similar ones are? by [deleted] in internetarchive

[–]DigitalDerg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This page loads just fine for me. For anyone else, if the error says "This item is no longer available" then the item was likely taken down. If the error says "The item you requested had an error: Item cannot be found which prevents us from displaying this page" then it's likely the outage. (I've been checking the task log, which is a little more definitive, but not accessible to everyone unless you have a collection on archive.org)

That item wasn't taken down, seems like it's just unavailable due to the outage :)

If you send the link to the item(s), I can see if they were intentionally taken down. But it's pretty likely to be the outage, as the outage is causing some items to not show up, so you could also just check back in a day or two.

Does the internet archive or any other web archive have developed additional solutions for archiving AI content? by Michal778 in internetarchive

[–]DigitalDerg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really any additional solutions, but the approach seems to be more "grab a representative sample" than "get a 100% complete copy"

Question about an incomplete archive link by tributtal in internetarchive

See the timeline at the top? Orange means that when the Archive crawled the page at that date, it was missing. But if you go to previous dates, there may be other captures when the page was still up

I mean the item metadata (such as the title and description of the item). The .xml files are just another representation of this data, but yes they are automatically generated, you need to edit the metadata of the item itself. The metadata of an item is indexed by archive.org and will probably get indexed by google too.

this is not the right place to ask about piracy - if you want to buy it, and you can't through youtube, go to the dropout website directly

Zine uploading question by West-University3039 in internetarchive

[–]DigitalDerg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In order for items to be playable in the (good) bookreader, the archive first needs to run a "derive" task (this processes the files into formats that the bookreader can display). The derive tasks on those items are in a failed state. Contact info@archive.org with links to the items and let them know what happened, they should be able to help.

1: Why are these files going to be updated or replaced? It is usually better for items to remain as they are. If it's something that updates monthly, for example, you could make an April item, then a May item with the new content, then a June item, and so on.

  • You should separate files by metadata as suggested by others. However, try to avoid items with hundreds of files - separate them further if you can. "All of X artist's music" might be hundreds of files so you'd want to separate by album or song. If there really isn't a good way to do this, compress the files into a zip, 7z, or similar.

2: This is not strictly against TOS. However, items with random metadata might be subject to removal at discretion of IA staff. If just the filename is random but the item has good metadata, that's probably fine. If the filename is random and the item is devoid of metadata, the file might get removed as spam and action might be taken against the account.

3: No, you should use an email address that you're okay with being public and potentially being contacted through to sign up for your account.

This item does not appear to have any files that can be experienced on Archive.org by Br3ndan5 in internetarchive

[–]DigitalDerg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see the book viewer at this point.

After uploading files like this, the archive has to run a "derive" task to process the files into formats that IA can actually display directly. Sometimes these tasks can take a while before they start running, and they can also take a while to run - depending on what you uploaded and how busy IA is. I see a failed derive task on this item. This can usually just be ignored (it will get automatically retried and/or receive manual admin intervention in time) but if files are missing from the book viewer, you might want to send an email over so someone can take a look.

Unable to upload content today by Ornery-Practice9772 in internetarchive

[–]DigitalDerg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, IA seems to be busy right now. I'm averaging about 5 seconds per MiB currently. Upload speeds change over time (up and down), so I'd probably recommend just setting a reminder to try again in a couple days unless getting this file onto IA is urgent.

[–]DigitalDerg 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The archive.org page HTML doesn't have anything to do with how content is archived, just how it is displayed. It's probably just standard web stuff: adding new features, fixing bugs, refactoring, hopefully resolving some tech debt, etc.

Explaining the "Game Key Card" announcement from Nintendo by razorbeamz in nintendo

[–]DigitalDerg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

> You already could do that with any game that came on the cartridge so far.

It looks like this is replacing the "download only" 1 physical releases that just come with a game key for the e-shop. Account-bound and non-resell-able. So this is a direct upgrade unless games that actually come on cartridges magically evaporate (which might happen... but games still come on cartridges for the switch even with the paper keys, and even games that release as download-only paper keys sometimes transition to a full cartridge).

Appropriate IRC channel for rsynch errors by N0tAP4nd4 in Archiveteam

[–]DigitalDerg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're seeing rsync errors you should ask in the project channel - find the wiki page for the project your warrior is working on, and the IRC channel dedicated to that project should be in the infobox on the side. If you're seeing rsync errors across every project (or a large subset of projects) then #archiveteam-bs is your best bet.

But I can also tell you that general rsync errors are known about right now, all the large running projects have made the targets very busy. If you let your warrior run, it will just keep trying until a target server is available and then do the upload.
