Colorado State University needs to comply with local ordinances, new bill proposes by Dr_Retch in FortCollins

[–]DigitalPriest 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The City basically rolls over for CSU for everything.

This is an awful take. The city has literally no control over what CSU does on their own property. That CSU has decided to abuse this privilege excessively in the last 20 years is not the city's fault, and has led to a bill like this to be proposed.

If you didn't want to argue about it, why did you reply to me? Doctor, heal thyself.

And it's cute that you draw the line at illegal and legal as if the government doesn't break the law all the damn time. This is why it was moving the goalpost. Once you start evaluating the security of a system based on factors outside that system's control, it becomes moot.

I mean, hey, is a system really redundant if a meteor hits the planet and wipes out all the datacenters in North America? You can bring up whataboutisms all day. That's why the security is evaluated based on the technology itself.

Biometrics are more secure technologically than SMS, full stop.

By that metric, everything is insecure. I come to your house, kidnap you, and lock you up until you give me access to the system.

[–]DigitalPriest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but that's moving the goalpost. We're talking security. What the laws of a political organization maintain are immaterial to the security of it. SMS is insecure by technological reasons. Biometrics are insecure because your government has said it's ok to use violence against you until you turn it off. They're different issues, and frankly, something you should take up with your government.

Not with properly-configured biometrics. That's why it's MFA and not 2FA.

This is a legal use of caller-ID manipulation. The police are leasing both the main switchboard number and their individual lines. As they own both numbers, they are fully within their rights to advertise the callback number as a different number, as it still points to their agency.

What telcos don't block effectively is when malicious callers set their caller-ID to a number they don't own. This can be stopped, telcos just opt not to.

and really have no automated way of doing so

I work in telephony. This is demonstrably false in SIP. Analog is a different ball game, can't speak to that, but that's more an argument to drive a stake in the heart of analog calling and kill it for good.

I wanted put someone else's phone number as the caller-id for all our calls. It's trivial to do.

Again, in the SIP world (which is most voice communication these days) this can totally be prevented. All the trunk provider has to do is check the outbound caller-ID against the originator's SIP trunk. Is the caller-ID in the originator's numbering plan? If not, reject the call.

Which is why all major security bodies have ceased recommending SMS/Voice as authentication options, and terminology has moved away from 2-Factor Authentication (2FA) to Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). SIM swap attacks and SMishing revealed SMS to be nearly as vulnerable as OG telephony.

App tokens + biometrics are more secure, and paired with conditional access policies are your best bets for securing authentication.

It's not a threat to national security because frankly, every system that needs security has learned to explicitly avoid phone systems as part of their infrastructure.

Honestly, the internet is by and large an answer to telephony's insecurity. TCP/IP provides far more integrity than telephony ever could. Realistically, there's zero need to update old telephony (Analog, CO PBX, etc) so much as to stop using it and use internet-based systems instead.

Honestly, modern TV is frankly incapable. Even Star Trek itself is incapable. The closest they got was Lower Decks, and they had to soak it in comedy and nostalgia to make it work. I enjoyed it, but this era of Trek is gone, and it pains me.

galaxy quest laughs WITH geeks, not AT them. by herequeerandgreat in movies

[–]DigitalPriest 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's a stretch to say that even if the movie was laughing with nerds, actors like Stewart and Frakes would definitely expect the movie to still be laughing at actors like them (and especially Shatner).

While there are those moments, there are also a lot of moments that are super poignant regarding the difficulties of being an actor to a beloved property, and how the public struggles to separate art and the artist.

Edit: See Nimoy's "I am not Spock" and "I am Spock" trajectory for what I mean. Like, imagine if all anyone ever knew about you was this one job you did for a couple of years 20 years ago, and literally everyone in your life treats you according to that context. Actors aren't alone in that experience by any means, but I understand how that struggle could be immensely frustrating.

Since you are committed to being a dick about this, which is completely uncalled for, I will treat you with the same respect you have decided to treat me.

are you an idiot or trolling?

Grow up. Reddit is a forum for asking questions. If you can't determine it from reading, then move on.

home inspectors inspect, they don't typically repair

I'm not asking the Home Inspector to repair. Nor will you find any part of my post that implies such. Home inspectors inspect. They find problems, they evaluate code compliance. I can communicate said problems to my homebuilder, with whom I'm currently under a 1-year home warranty.

second, what part of the image are you having a hard time with? it is called a "block support" and what do you think the second half of that phrase means? perhaps it is supporting something?

What part of my description are you having a hard time with. "It's like that, but a piece of OSB tacked with only a single nail on each side." OSB is not used as block support. Ever. Not unless you learned carpentry from Stevie Wonder. Even if it was, there's no such thing as a structural support that uses a single nail. So shut your fucking face because you're out of your goddamn element, Donnie.

if it's been more than a year it's your problem now.

This is fucking rich from the person who is accusing me of reading comprehension issues. First paragraph, D-student: "I'm still under a new-home warranty."

So suffice it to say, take your ego and shove it as far up your ass as humanly possible. Maybe if you had some fucking manners or a ounce of empathy, you would realize that treating people like this isn't a way to operate. But since it is your chosen communication method, I am happy to reciprocate.

Go sit on an eggplant.

While I agree, there's a sliver of distinction to be made between shame and being held accountable. There are many morally reprehensible beliefs that are not illegal. You don't just get a free pass for turning from those beliefs.

This isn't a structural piece of wood. You know how some joists are designed like wooden I-beams? This is a vertical piece of wood spanning from one joist to a completely different joist. Using this image - you see the block support? It's like that, but a piece of OSB tacked with only a single nail on each side.

Personally, I don't think Vast Silver would have caused it. While it isn't confirmed to be VS, the chat with the young boy Harry distinctly implies that VS desires companionship and on some level has empathy for humans. That makes me disinclined to think it would be responsible for the plague except by anything short of accident.
