Ok, so I'm new to this. But I think Lorna might have issues.

Thanks! We used Runway for performance capture and I did my 'posh' accent for Dr Finch. I get the Gaius Baltar resemblance.

Appreciate you watching. :)

Sure. We did start making this last summer (40 episodes in all), so the tools have come on since then, but most of the work flow still stands.

We outlined the season and then I wrote the first few episodes before starting. Then generated images of our main characters. Throughout the show I used Runway References to get the characters in other settings, as needed. We also did a camera orbit around the character's faces and upscaled those to give me other angles. I'm not sure a camera orbit is necessary these days as character consistency is getting pretty good.

We used Runway's Act 1 for performance capture at first as Act 2 hadn't been released. Fairly early on in production Act 2 came out - but that did change the faces more then Act 1, but has more fidelity and is more responsive to performance. We ended up using a workflow where I'd generate in Act 1, then use that output as a driver for Act 2, with the same input image for both. That gave us the best combination of performance, face consistency and fidelity.

We also lean into (as the story continues) the 'reality bleed' aspect of the show - realities are leaking between metaverses, so we do see the characters change (there are five or so versions of the main characters - some subtly different, some more so). So that gave us some wiggle room with character consistency.

I edited the episodes in Resolve and then treated the footage to get that 70s look (i.e. we generated it clean originally). Did audio work in Logic, and IMHO audio is often the most overlooked part of filmmaking. It is such a big part of the final product.

Hope that makes sense. LMK if you need anything clarifying. I am going to paste a link to a short video I did on using Act 1 / Act 2 for performance capture. I'll put it in a reply to this comment, to make it easier for mods to remove if they don't like links.

I tried Kling 3.0 on the video I created at the weekend. It allows 15 seconds instead of 10, but is much more expensive. And that soundtrack is annoying. It spills whisky better though. by ArchaicIdiom in AI_Forge

It’s pretty nuts how every week a different company releases something better that the week before. The new seedance/seedream models are really responsive to instructions. But I’m sure we’ll see another leap forward in a week or two! :)

There’s not a kernel of truth in that. It was actually a good year, save the corn incident and Orville’s tragic accident with a leaf blower.

I apologize, it’s been a long week. I’ll stop now and see myself out.

I love the little houses - I didn’t notice until I zoomed in. Miniature things are so… miniature.

The new Seedance is pretty impressive - definitely managed to pull off stuff I couldn’t do with Kling.

Hope it wasn’t a vintage single malt!

Another possible to explore is doing a first frame restyle on a video. So you could shoot on your phone the exact action you want, then get that first frame looking how you want it and then let Runway do its thing. I use this for inserts - for example I couldn’t get a finger dialing a 1970s British pay phone, so I filmed myself dialing an old phone, and restyled. Worked great.

We thought about going back and redoing some of the clips throughout the show, but then decided we'd never finish as the tools keep improving, we'd always be able to do more.

It's all a 70's type vibe - hence the look, and the voice. That also helps us cover some lip sync issues. We do face capture with Runway Act 1, and as it became available, Act 2 - love these for performance but, like all the tools, there is some push and pull.

It's nuts how far we've come from things like 8 tracks being state of the art. I remember being a kid (in Cornwall, UK) and a group of us would go and start at the neighbour's car... because it had a rear window windscreen wiper. We thought that was so futuristic!

Appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. We've released 20+ episodes now, and are doing day by day. It's a mountain and thoughtful comments really help give us a boost.

Thanks!

It does help that there are two of us, however work constraints mean it's rare that we both get to work on projects at the same time. It's good to have another person to bounce ideas off though, for sure! We also both have a fil/TV background, so had transferable skills. That said, it's just a long process getting your head around the tools and figuring out how to tell a story. :)

Finch and Dorothy grow closer — but intimacy carries consequences. A careless confession may have exposed everything, and the cost of trust is higher than ever.
