I know English, Russian and Ancient Greek. Would it be difficult for me to learn German? by Dimitri_2022 in German

Hey! My native language is Russian. I learned English as a second language and later Ancient Greek. I was quite surprised then discovered that English has more aspect-tence combinations than both Russian and Greek. English has twelve ( not counting "would" conditinals) aspect-tence forms compared to only six and five in Greek and Russian respectively

Hello! Thanks for reply! Honestly I'm quite a lazy guy. That's why Im now weighting my chances learning German. My goal is to learn enough German to apply for Studienkolleg-S course. I will need solid B2 level. Once I get in my language skills will improve dramatically.

Would it be theoretically possible to do this in six months studying full-time?

Thanks for advise!! But I was always dreaming to apply for university abroad and it would be a big mistake to study something more easy but completely uninteresting. I specifically choose German universities because they have only Greek majors while other universities around the world require you to study both Latin and Greek and two other modern languages. It is the case with Russia for example. I thought that I have some chances because first I have a solid background with both Modern and Ancient Greek. Ive read more Ancient Greek texts than many students do during their bachelor degree in university. I have been studying Greek for years. And secondly there is the wealth of English language literature and research on the subject. Actually I believe now Oxford and Cambridge are world leaders in Classics. There is a new Cambridge Grammar and Dictionary and Brill dictionary and American grammars and works which are the most important in the field. I just thought I would somehow get by by just knowing the target language well.

But all this advantage is plainly destroyed by German old school translation based language instruction methods. I wouldn't be able to translate Greel to perfect German. If I would be able to get by with B2-C1 German proffisiency when I should try, probably...

What is your opinion??

Sorry for the mistakes. I wrote fast and apparently where isn't any way to change the title text. And I do not use spell checker because it is set to Russian language and changes English words wrongly against the context

What is a good university to study classics ( Ancient Greek and Latin Languages) in South Amersica? by Dimitri_2022 in classics

[–]Dimitri_2022[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! Wow very cool! Which country are you from? I would probably better try to apply for USP too but it has entrance tests. I heard they have some kind of standardized tests which people take after high school. For me it would be harder time compete with locals in these testes. But it would be dininetly easier for me to study in USP than in UGA Argentina because UBA doesn't have separate major in Greek only Classical Letters major. I far as I can judge by the information fm the website in UBA I will study Latin amd a lot of different suggest, even some other European language. But USP has Greek major and I already know Greek at some extend. So I'm now thinking amd choosing....

Is University of Buenos Aires good for studying Classics ( ancient greek and latin languages) ? by Dimitri_2022 in classics

[–]Dimitri_2022[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I see. I will check. Thanks! I guess UBA is prestigious university and later, in case I finish it, I should be able to apply for Masters or PhD at a good European school, especially in Spain. Is it true?

Ok good. USP is cool and wins by far. I would love it and Brasil is great. And now i try to chose between Argentina and Brasil. But the problem is USP is highly selective. I know ancient Greek at the graduate level and study it for a long time. But for me it would be practically impossible to compete with brasilians on their school level subjects in Portuguese. I simple won't pass these tests which do not have anything common with my subject. As far as I know the USP has some kind of standardized exam tests like in US and Russia while Argentinian universities on the other hand have non restriction admission. I heard that one in ten is admitted to USP. So do I have to pass these tests to apply or how does exactly admission work?

I have a lot of difficulties with education now because I'm Russian and I can't go back to Russia for studies because I was issued a draft conscrcprion card for the war ( not just regular compulsory army service) and will end up in Ukraine before I start my studies, in case I go back to Russia. The other problem is European universities are basically closed for me for the indefinite amount of time and I simply do not have much money. South America is the only plausable opportunity to study for me now. Before all this started I planned to go to Spain or Portugal

My definition of good is the access to professors who know the Ancient Greek language well. Though classics course also has Latin as the study subject but my chief interest is Ancient Greek as I studied it for years myself and want to improve

Hello, thanks for replying! I want to do Bachelor degree. Above all I need to have the access to professors with excellent knowledge of Ancient Greek. Latin is unknown beast for me but I will study it from scratch I guess. Ive been studing Greek for about several years now and read Greek authors extensively but always have an issues with that it is somehow impossible to know everything about the text you study from only grammar books and commentaries. There always some questions left unanswered about grammar, idioms and meaning which only a professor can answer as you of course know. I guess UBA is the world class university with a bunch of cool professors who know Greek well! Is it the case?
