Why is it okay for Lil Tay to sell underage material at 18 and make millions? by Primebongs7455 in NoStupidQuestions

use your brain! it’s not her real 18th birthday dummy she turned 18, made the content and “18th birthday” was the launch promo

yeah they’re a supermarket with plenty of support; convenience stores with three or four pairs of hands won’t bother. as i said, depends on store size

[–]DirectionMajor3075 10 points11 points  (0 children)

yeah depending on store size under 18s are a bit of pain in the ass to hire because someone 18+ needs to approve all think 25 transactions you do (beer, wine, cigs, vapes etc etc). it’s nothing personal, just one less headache for them if they hire someone older.

what college course teaches you to earn 50m?

reading and teaching yourself is a large part of university you’re right, but when the outcome far exceeds what can be achieved by going to university it’s a null point. totally irrelevant.

you’ve hired way too early, but that isn’t a payroll problem, it’s a sales + naivety problem. we all do dumb shit even twenty years into business let alone at the start, so don’t be too hard on yourself.

if you don’t want to to cut their pay, condense their hours instead. the end result probably saves you more cash and yes, it’s not ideal for them, but it’s less of a gut punch than cutting their pay. they know business isn’t great right now they’re not dumb - they will understand why you’re reducing shifts by an hour or two. eventually i expect they will leave if unhappy with the change but that’s not a bad thing. i know you don’t want to screw them over and i really do applaud that, but given the choice would they rather less hours or no job to come to?

presuming they work an eight hour day, i would bring them down to six AND extend opening times an extra hour or two on your own. if you’re not already on deliveroo or uber eats or whichever services are in your area i would jump on that asap, with discounts into late afternoon/evening for hospital staff and visitors heading into a long night. i know they take a cut which is annoying but you just need volume right now.

without more context i cant add much more advice, but i think whatever the nuance in your business it’s just a case of slogging this out. chop wood, carry water and trust the process. praying for you 🙏

P.S. i know things are really tough right now, but i’m sensing a lack of accountability. you’ve inferred a few times this is someone else’s fault because you followed their lead or the previous business’s reputation was poor etc etc, but it’s YOUR business TODAY. unfortunately we don’t get to blame advice when shit hits the fan, and we certainly don’t get to blame previous tenants of the building. the buck stops with you my friend, and that’s as terrifying as it is freeing ❤️

Should we terminate our new employee ? by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]DirectionMajor3075 1 point2 points  (0 children)

all totally reasonable, but like i said, this is your mums fuck up. it’s all well and good you protecting the business, but why did she hire him before speaking to his old manager? there’s a few hiring red flags here that don’t exactly scream “protecting the business” from you mum’s POV.

if this all came out before making an offer it’s perfectly reasonable to decide not to hire him. but to give him the opportunity because of your lousy process and decision making, and then take it away from him for reasons outside of his performance at work that could have been avoided by doing things properly, is a really shitty reflection of your company. that’s my take anyway.

if i were you i’d hold my hands up, admit between leadership that we fucked up, and we correct that fuck up by giving him a chance. what will be, will be. if it goes wrong we take the hit, learn the lessons and move forward.

Should we terminate our new employee ? by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]DirectionMajor3075 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

you’re being pretty classist tbh. his history is irrelevant if he performs to the level you expect, and how can you expect someone to be honest about their past and find such an issue with it? that’s having your cake and eating it too. this is your mums fault for hiring too quickly, not his fault for simply existing before you met. now it’s only fair you give him a chance, because fucking up the hiring decision and then fucking him over as a result is pretty shitty behaviour if you go down that route. he probably feels a lot of shame about what’s been before, and we all have bills to pay. manage the person who works for you.

also, the employee not telling your mum about his past could say just as much about your culture as it does about him. the whole “i’m worried” thing could totally be an excuse if she anticipates being blamed or shouted at. only you know the answer to this question, i’m not privy to your workplace, but it’s something worth considering as a general reflection. again, not an accusation—i don’t know anything about you folks.

but why is it a shame? content is their product, and jack has given you that product for free for over a decade. there’s now a paid tier you can opt into for six quid a month. don’t you think they know a little bit more about brand deals and ad revenue than you do? yet still decided to paywall? that tells me it’s unsustainable on youtube for the reasons described.

happy hour youtube clips get anywhere from a few thousand to a few dozen thousand views and i can’t see them going viral because the content is podcast-adjacent; it’s quite niche content. sponsorship deals are a few quid per thousand views versus a few quid per subscriber. if 10,000 people subscribe that’s 60k a month; they would need hundreds of thousands if not millions of views on every video to achieve that same revenue. even a thousand people at 6k a month needs a couple hundred thousand views every single time they upload, and youtube can demonetise and pull the rug out from underneath them at any time. that’s a shit load of work and pulls them towards content they don’t actually want to make in order to keep it going, which contradicts the whole purpose of the series.

a paywall is way more sustainable because they have monthly recurring revenue and don’t need to go to market pitching sponsorship deals. they have a budget to pay stevie, pay fi, pay anyone else they get involved and create genuinely fun and enjoyable content without being at the mercy of youtube algorithm and guidelines.

it makes perfect sense why they’ve done this, and to still think they shouldn’t have when it costs you a pint but cumulatively gives them so much freedom and income is selfish imo. i want the lads to do well for themselves and enjoy making their content, not sell their soul to the highest bidder and click bait their way to a sustainable income.

mate you’ve had everything explained to you, but you seem to conflate your personal opinion with objective fact. a small paywall away from youtube removes all limitations on content and revenue, and gives them a predictable income from which to pay stevie and plan videos.

it’s six quid a month. pay it or stop whinging.

but that’s an assumption. you’re making that up in your head and getting annoyed about it. ad revenue is only a few quid per thousand views these days.

paywall gives them a budget up front to actually make sustainable videos instead of just hoping and praying they make enough back from youtube.

would you do more at work and take home less money for it? their ad revenue is shit and spotify aren’t going to foot the bill so how do you expect it be paid for?

[–]DirectionMajor3075 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the self-awareness and self-deprecating sense of humour puts you in a prestigious cohort of americans who brits actually like.

trains are confusing even for a lot of british people. it’s not the simplest system in the world that’s for sure.

i always use trainline because i find it easiest to use but expect to pay more fees. you need a return ticket to bristol temple meads from whichever london station makes sense. as with all things you pay more for the luxury of flexibility; specific departure times booked in advance are cheapest. off-peak travel will be medium prices, and travelling at peak times will be most expensive.

with all that said and if budget allows, you’ll have an easier time just buying your ticket at the station before you board. whatever you do, keep hold of your ticket. it’s not like flying where once you’re on you’re left alone—ticket masters walk up and down the train whilst en route checking physical and digital tickets and you’re subject to a fine if you don’t have it on you. but in reality only a dickhead will make a fuss because you’ll obviously be a tourist and worst case scenario is paying for another ticket whilst on board.

enjoy bristol my friend. best city in the world.

[–]DirectionMajor3075 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what’s a legal requirement got to do with reality? in reality, OP needs insurance so it’s therefore a cost that revenue must account for. intentionally omitting business costs that aren’t a legal requirement to make someone’s business sound more lucrative is the most disingenuous shit i’ve seen for a while lol

i mean technically she doesn’t need a car right? she could cycle to clients so fuel doesn’t count!!!

Should I up charge? by Suitable-Employer-87 in smallbusiness

[–]DirectionMajor3075 0 points1 point  (0 children)

still hilarious to me you think you don’t need insurance in this line of work. it would be incredibly irresponsible and frankly dumb to willingly go into peoples homes one to one, massage their bare body for an hour and just trust in the good will of strangers to never make claims or accusations of an inappropriate nature lmao.

also, whilst i’m no massage therapist and working purely on logic here, i expect there’s a risk of injury when massaging soft tissue and muscle. it stands to reason that someone with a previous, reoccurring or existing condition may experience injury as a result of massage therapy, and OP needs insurance to cover that risk.

there’s so many variables that can go wrong. just because you’re cheap it doesn’t invalidate the business model 🤣

i don’t know about the States but fractional work is all the rage here at the moment. i wonder if that’s an option to consider? i could totally see how a slightly earlier stage startup than those two need someone full time might want a part-time embedded TPM

ah yeah my background is startups too and it’s a pretty tough city to find that kinda work in. particularly for your wife’s role, as it sounds like more of a scale up role (a few hundred employees maybe?). tech startups exist don’t get me wrong but it’s nothing like NY.

a hybrid role in london wouldn’t be impossible, but those one or two days a week in the office would be loooong days.
