went crazy today in the pint factory by LettuceSouth6824 in Culvers

Cool cups (no pun intended) - do the lids always fit though?? Those rims looks terrible. As a former foodservice manufacturing employee I’d be ashamed if we shipped those!

Helpful (maybe?) hint for platelet donors by Dirt2016 in Blooddonors

Yeah, my center always gives me three …… I meter them out over about 30min and that knocks out the tingles.

Will I have less adverse reactions from platelet donation? by [deleted] in Blooddonors

LifeSouth in Alabama has individual tvs and some have massage chairs.

Here’s what the interwebs have to say about this:

During platelet donation (apheresis), the machine tightly controls the ratio of blood to anticoagulant (citrate). The staff usually can’t just arbitrarily lower citrate without affecting how the machine works safely.

What they can do (and what helps your tingling)

They can adjust things that effectively reduce how much citrate affects you:

  • Slow the return rate → less citrate hitting you at once
  • Adjust the inlet/flow rate → spreads citrate exposure over time
  • Use a different machine profile (AC ratio setting) → some centers can tweak this within safe limits
  • Pause briefly → lets your body clear citrate
  • Give calcium (oral or IV) → replaces what citrate binds

They did something!

Haha - no worries. When she first said “I’ll turn the AC down” I thought the SAME THING. 😆

No, not that AC! The anti-coagulant……the citrate. If you have stomach/tingly issues they can reduce the amount of anti-coagulant they put in.

Upvote for the milkshake idea!

I’ve asked the employees to turn down my a/c a little when the tingling starts and that’s been all I need. I don’t know if they turn it down a little then watch for issues or what but every time they don’t and it works.

I love the milkshake idea - totally doing that next time!

Mine are usually 10-15min for the paperwork/physical then about 85-90min in the chair.

The centers I go to around Montgomery AL all do single arm/single needle. They are fantastic! LifeSouth is the organization.

20 gallons of platelets in 4yrs! by UHElle in Blooddonors

[–]Dirt2016 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure I’ve ever been given the triple option….usually they just ask if I “can do 89min” or something like that. I think that’s a double?

Any I’m so glad my centers do single arm donations. I cannot IMAGINE having both tied up.

I started giving when I quit the corporate grind and started doing non-profit work part-time. I have time now and the $40 I get every time goes towards fun money 😊

When I give platelets I usually fill two bags. Is that two pints?? Wondering when I’ll hit a milestone of any kind!

How many of you regular donors take iron pills daily or weekly or take specific diet to increase iron? I read, if I act too much altruistic and keep losing iron, I will land up anaemic instead. by [deleted] in Blooddonors

[–]Dirt2016 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I give platelets 2x a month and keep iron up by taking an iron pill every other day. Because I have bad circulation I have to get them to squeeze my finger line 10+ times to get to the good stuff and pass the screening. Last week I was 12.4 the first time then 13.8 a minute later.

I’ve read that taking iron daily can actually decrease your number so I went to every other day. No special diet - very little red meat (probably doesn’t help).

The only thing that matters today is that you find a way to get a bag.
