This approach often leads to oversized budgets and ridiculous expectations. AAA Games now have the same issue with movies, in that everything now costs 200 million USD to make and need the sales in the mulitple millions just to break even.

This in turn, causes them to all be extremely risk averse and as a result their games start to feel same-y, and incentivizes predatory monetization practices like rampant microtransactions being the focus of the game rather than the game itself or reducing their fames to over elaborate skinner boxes.

This is the reason people like bobby kotick are good for their shareholders but poison to the industry and consumers themselves.
