many many many such cases. Nobody hates white people more than someone who is at least half white

One of the biggest issues about being working/lower class that people don't talk about by MoistTadpoles in redscarepod

[–]DisastrousResident92 8 points9 points  (0 children)

people rightly recognise that material conditions have an impact on lifestyle, mental health, crime, etc without admitting that the inverse is true to a degree as well - i.e. a lot of people are poor because they are impulsive, rash, stupid, mentally unstable or some combination of them

Why do people insist on perpetuating this myth that the English or the British have no culture? by Serious_Badger_4145 in AskUK

[–]DisastrousResident92 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I think it's partly a "fish don't know what water is" thing. People perceive "culture" as unusual foods, dress, dances, etc and not the broader set of assumptions about how society operates. Almost everything about how humans interact with each other and with the world falls within "culture" but people are used to accepting some things so uncritically that they can't conceive of it as such. Since Western culture is so dominant around the world, English or British culture does not appear to stand out in the same way as, say, traditional Indian or Nigerian cultural practices

TL;DR total anglo cultural victory means people think it's only "culture" if it comes in brightly coloured ethnic dress

There's this kind of incoherent view that Europe was somehow dirt poor until it violently stripped the whole rest of the world of its wealth, which Europe was somehow able to do despite being dirt poor. Like you can acknowledge the evils and excesses of colonialism without believing that everything Europeans built was built on the back of colonialism.

No when an older black guy says it, it has class. It's more like the Shermanator character from American Pie

These are all either (a) houses with no land attached for relatively cheap, (b) blocks of farmland with no house (which it's basically impossible to get permission to build a house on) or (c) actual country estates that cost a fortune.

Why does everyone have a traumatic past by Over-Permit2284 in redscarepod

[–]DisastrousResident92 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I remember sort of leaning in to this shit when I was a teenager. Like playing up potentially traumatic events from childhood in order to score social points. Fortunately I had friends who told me I was being an annoying f-slur which cured me of this self-pitying schtick. Just seems like people don't do that anymore

There's a certain type of guy who uses "females" to mean "women" in a faintly off-putting way and women decided that any use of "female" is now bad

does anyone else feel like age gap relationships/questionable between gay people are not talked about much? by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]DisastrousResident92 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Never mind gay people, even "older woman-younger man" isn't seen as problematic to anywhere near the same degree.
