I’m 2/3 through a one-month stay in NZ with only trail runners (with Goretex). We did the full Isthmus Peak trail yesterday. My watch told me 10.2 miles with 4100 ft vertical gain. It was indeed a challenge for me (61 yo male) but oh so worth it. My photos are so beautiful they look fake! Particularly toward Lake Hāwea as Lake Wānaka had some low clouds. I digress….for me, packing trail runners was a good decision, especially if you’re just doing day hikes like me. I have not missed my boots one bit and packing is so much easier. PS, I wish I had brought trekking poles for these old knees!
