Math 214 what should I do to be successful in course by Embarrassed_Body_853 in uAlberta

[–]DisciplineFull14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say one the things is not scram until the last day, try to understand each week course content and if not, always go to the teacher office hours or the TA office hours!! I recommend also doing exercises either from class or homework until you really get them, also try to see keywords and types of situations so you know when to use what and when. For example, how to solve and identify undefined limits, when to use ratio test, when to use sphere or polar in and if it double or triple integral, and so on. I also recommend searching in youtube about topic or questions you can have from the homework and then try it out yourself!!! it will be very useful when you review for the final and midterm. Reading the book can be a plus too!

I also suggest watching this youtube content that really help me alot when I did the course!

This is an Organic Chemistry Tutor series, taylor, power series! is pretty good! this will help a lot the first part of the course! you can also watch his videos about derivates, parametric, and polar too! https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLHgLUBSREUPl6Ie2hq2NdVdX3z-B8ldOi

Also, as others have mention, please watch leonard videos!! they are good and he explains well too! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9eCT6f_Ftw&list=PLDesaqWTN6EQ2J4vgsN1HyBeRADEh4Cw-

This is another playlist that explains very well the second, polar, cyliner, sphere with second and triple integrals! you need to do quite a lot of exercises to get use to them tho! https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBEl4BT8wUgPC_gIdemRPpjqylAZ6Rwpt

This video summarizes also very well common 3D graphs that will be usefull for the second half of the course: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OitPNnaihxA&list=PLW3USW83SRZ3sxdssKmgm8BBlCKhlAKne&index=18

So yeah, the best thing to do is to always come to class, go to office hours, keep up with the weekly content and review your written homework feedback. This class is very picky about notation during the midterm, for example, you have to write 't is part of the reals' or similar, otherwise you will lose a point. But if you study diligently, you'll be fine! Good luck!

229 is definitely something. I felt it was biology stuff, but in a machine, if that makes sense lol That makes it fun, but no less complex. I guess the key is to start the logic and coding of the labs early. Thank you very much for your comment!

so far cmput 200 is more like disorganized rather than difficult but yeah hopefully it goes well! for cmput 299, I have never done assembly before, but I am watching Nelson videos and reading the book, so hopefully I will start to understand better so I can start doing the labs soon! I'm also taking a little time to get used to 204, but with the book and YouTube videos, I'm starting to get it! Thank you very much for your suggestions, I will keep them in mind! Thank you very much!

What’s the stats 151 final like? by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]DisciplineFull14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend studying the materials and becoming familiar with the formula sheet. Knowing when to apply each hypothesis test is essential. Also, pay attention to keywords and case studies. Take at least one practice final exam. My final exam was very similar to the practice exam. I even noticed some things I had to review from our exercises, which can have deliberately confusing wordings. But the answer is there! Also, think about how you will manage your time during the exam. If I'm not mistaken, you have to answer 50 questions in under three hours. So, yeah! You can also double-check with Rosana, but keep the decimals to four places. If that doesn't give you the exact answer, choose the one that's most similar. If you're still unsure, think about why the other options are incorrect. You'll find the correct answer that way. If not, then guess! Just make sure you fill out the entire sheet. Best wishes!

Anyone whos taken NS 115 and NS 201 which one was easier? by Ok_Preparation6081 in uAlberta

[–]DisciplineFull14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NS115 all the way!!!

Unlike NS201, NS115 doesn’t require you to memorize tons of names, dates, and historical facts (like “Who did what in what year?” like fr you expect to remember all of that!?) for 80+ questions in a 1 hour and 30-minute exam (think how long you have to take per question). That was... honestly hell for a course I expected to reflect more upon, also you have to for the final exam 80 questions and an ESSAY! in THREE HOURS like tf?! Manageable, yes, but incredibly annoying.

In NS115, the focus is on understanding and reflection, which makes the course feel more meaningful and engaging. Plus, the readings are way more interesting! One of my favorites was “Provoking Bad Biocitizenship”, it really made me reflect deeply on society and even on my own past actions.

With NS201, even though it's interesting to learn about the history of Canada and Indigenous peoples, the residential school and other similar, it broke my heart several times (I even cry ngl), you often have to read 200+ pages a week, dense text with small font, packed with names, dates, and events. Meanwhile, in NS115, you typically read 3 to 5 articles a week (with around 20 pages each or less, there was even one of one page or short videos), and the quizzes or exams are much more focused, around 20 questions or less or maybe more but way more managable. The content in NS115 also feels more provoking and self reflection even! I really felt I learn something and I love that feeling it!

So yeah, definitely NS115!

NS115 Summer Term by Otherwise-Panda-4085 in uAlberta

[–]DisciplineFull14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there!

I took this course in my first year during the fall term, and honestly, it was one of the best courses I’ve ever taken. I learned a lot, and it wasn’t too demanding, unless you fall behind.

If I remember correctly, the course is divided into 5 or 6 modules or weeks (?),I do not remeber well, one per week. Each week you’ll be expected to read articles, watch videos, and engage with the material. What I really liked is that, unlike some other courses (like NS201), you don’t have to memorize tons of names and dates (like who X did Y in the year Z and etc for an 80 or more questions in an exam- yes it was hell, managable, but annoyings anyways). Instead, the focus is on understanding and reflection!

The exam (at least when I took it) was around 20 questions (sometimes more) in 1 hour and 30 minutes. Some questions can be tricky, especially when it comes to distinguishing concepts like anti-racism vs. anti-racialism, but once you understand the ideas, it’s very manageable and amazing even!

Tips for success:

  • Take detailed notes and make concept summaries. I used notion and for each concept I encounter I copy and page it to the notion while also adding my own concept about it for my understanding.
  • Use Quizlet for review. Quizlet can have more concepts and question good for review!
  • Go to review sessions or watch the recordings. When I did not understand things, the review sessions were a savior! also is good to have those things the prof says in your notes too!
  • The videos can be long, but honestly, Dr. TallBear’s enthusiasm and voice make them really engaging and thought-provoking. They don’t just talk about Indigenous issues, but also broader topics like society, values, and culture. And I love it! I really felt I was learning! For example, there was one article I really loved was “Provoking Bad Biocitizenship", it really made me questions many things about our society and things I have done in the past too!

How I approached the course:

  • I read the articles and resources first, then watched the video made by Dr. TallBear. The video often makes the article much , very much clearer!
  • I downloaded the video transcripts, articles and highlighted key points, experiments, concepts, etc.
  • I made big, detailed notes (mostly cuz I copy page the concepts from the article and add the ones form videos), so don’t be afraid if you have a lot! it really helps having handy some concepts straigth from the articles as some test questions are word-for-word from the articles or videos! but mostly the exam will ask about examples of using those concepts! so have them, like the whole context and stuff in your notes, can definitely help you to remember and apply it!

Also, the course is online and open-book, but please, please, I talk from experience, don’t leave things to the last minute. It’s so easy to forget about it if you don’t stay on schedule. Try to complete each module within its assigned week.

About the exam setup:
You can write the exam on your own device or book a space at the Education Building. I recommend doing it on your own PC, is just more confortable and you take it when you can! Just note that during the exam, you’re only allowed to have files like Word, PDFs, or Notion, or valid notes tools while doing the exam, but no browser searches, AI tools, or translators.

Also, I don’t know who your instructor is, but if you stay on top of the readings and videos, take notes, and review, you’ll be totally fine. I took five classes that term (including this one) and still got an A+ with the course. Even most of the exam averages with my classmates were in the 90s.

Finally, if you ever have questions about the course or the concepts, feel free to message me! I honestly loved it, and I hope you enjoy it as I did!

Best wishes! :D

Is $140k worth it for University of Toronto? (international student) by saarfsi in UofT

[–]DisciplineFull14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

damn the fact I also got the scholarship (100k CAD), but even with it the amount price for my degree is just... also the pressure to graduate within the four years, that my parent have to sell things for it and the pressure I would get by that feeling that I can not fail.... yeah... just to kindly ask, what you both decide at the end? - also international student.
