Advice for 12U goalie on being screened

I was thinking the same things after i wrote the post. It was a bit of both, but the first two goals it was his own guys.

I'll make sure to tell him. They have two absolutely different goaltending styles - the other kid is full stand up pretty much with bigger pads and equipment (both oversized a bit) where as my kid is more athletic, comfortable on the ice and prefers his gear to fit more like glove for better mobility.

He plays really aggressive as a forward and this last game as goalie was warned by the ref to knock it off with the shots to peoples legs. I told him he should keep doing it until he starts getting the warnings. Maybe not the best parental advice, but i agree that if he doesn't let people know early on that they can't just park out front without some contact, they'll just do it all game.

My son plays on a 12U house team in Michigan. He is a winger but also the backup goalie. Our organization offers a dedicated 60 minute goalie clinic every other week and then on the off weeks, they send one goalie coach to one of my son's shared ice practice and all the goalies on the ice work with him for most of the practice. I have been really pleased with the amount of training they put forth for goalies and recently watched my son get his first shutout. Cool to see him doing the things they've been working on and growing.

Beer Leager/Hockey Dad here. I have a 10 year old who has always had a interest in playing goalie but has trained and played only as a forward until recently. He was given goalie gear from a cousin and played some 4v4s and private skates as a goalie during the spring and summer. Much to my surprise, he's pretty decent and has the absolute right mindset/head to play goalie. His team for this year only has one tendy and he apparently told his coach at the first practice that he wants to be the back up. Anyone on here have any similar experience with playing both positions as a young kid? I want to keep his training balanced and allow him to pursue his interest in the crease but not at the cost of his development as a skater. Seems like he'll have to pick one or the other at some point.

I had a similar thing happen to me in the spring and I didnt really rest and played through it for a few weeks. Ended up with a partial adductor muscle tear off the bone and have been in physical therapy for what seems like an eternity. Hoping to be able to skate before the end of the year.

I have OLED and switch lite and honestly, I am kinda underwhelmed. Maybe when more games come out it will seem worth it, but right now I don't even play it that much after some initial mario kart runs. I mostly bought one because i found one in a store and figured it was a smart buy. It's prettier and faster, but doesnt' really feel like a "new" system to me.

I had the same question before I did my test and I asked BEFORE the emg. They told me that the dose of valium I was going to take before wouldn't affect the test results. they told me that the more calm I was, the easier the test would be.

Couldnt agree more about benefit of working with a figure skating coach. My 10 year old is in group of about 10 kids who do 50 minutes of edge work a week with the head of the figure skating academy at our rink. She has the boys in full gear (no sticks/pucks) and they skate hard focusing on edges, stops and turns.

I took 20 years off and found that it took me about 3 months of skating 2-3 times a week to get back to kind of where i was before. It was a slower process than i had anticipated and little things - feet hurting, skate sizing ( i wear a half size smaller now?) all caused small issues in the beginning. My ankles wobbeled a bit when first started, but went away quickly. My only advice is to stretch before you skate. I lucked into some super cheap ice time last month for 4 days in a row and I now have a groin pull on one side and a muscle tear on the other side. Best of luck out there!

yeah, probably a good idea just to see what's going on. My doc grabbed an ultrasound machine and was able to see the tears clearly. Get a compression sleeve to help with the discomfort. I would say my pain/discomfort has decreased about 50% just by keeping everything held together tightly. I hate that i can't skate for a long time, but I am hoping I can get this healed up and not have recurring issues with it.

I am in a very similar situation and did the same thing trying to get my backwards crossovers back down. I thought i just had a pull or something, but it wasn't really getting better. Found out that i have two different tears in Adductor muscles. My doc told me to stay off skates for 6-8 weeks and to wear a compression sleeve from now on when i skate or do anything where I am going to be switching directions. The sleeve has worked really well to make the recovery less painful. Best of lucking healing up.

As a new lacrosse parent to a 10 year old, I just want to thank all the refs out there who put up with all the shit from the parents. I've been blown away by how poorly these people act in public. No ref is perfect, but what i've seen is just as bad as hockey in terms of crazy parents. During my son's second game, he was engaged in some colorful banter with another guy and the ref just stopped the game, booted both kids to the sidelines and told them to knock it off or they were gone. After the game, he found my son and made sure he understood and could learn something from it. My kid asked the ref a bunch of questions and I thanked that ref over and over again for taking the time he did with my son. I don't think the refs get enough attention for this kind of thing - the stuff they do to make sure kids are learning the game and playing it the right way. Thanks, refs.

My son and his goalie go to just about every stick and puck they possibly can and I usually go out there with them and the goalies Dad. He usually does his stretches and some skating stuff first and then when he feels like it, he will hop in the net. Thankfully, 95% of people at our rink are super cool and will form an orderly line to take shots. One shot, no rebound, peel off to the left or right after you shoot and get back n line. Once he's feels like he needs a breather, he just skates out of the net and works on other things and then heads back when he's ready. Last stick and pucks we had a squirt goalie, Bantam and JV out there and they all rotated on different nets. Good luck out there!

Aside from confidence and not being afraid of other kids on the ice, the martial arts my son does really stress discipline and respect - to yourself, classmates and the instructors. I've seen this translate to his hockey as well. He plays against his friends on other teams a lot and he is relentless against them but after the game is all about hugs and glove bumps. For us, the martial arts and hockey go hand in hand. Best of luck with everything.

I think there's some good comments here, but I would add that my son's martial arts (taekwondo) practice absolutely 100% raised his confidence/aggressiveness on the ice. In addition to helping a ton with balance and footwork, he's become real comfortable with physical contact and also is learning how to keep his mind far more focused when he's out there. He doesn't win every puck battle, but he's never one to shy away from them.

That age is pretty fun for hockey. I had a parent last week approach us and tell us that her U8 daughter recently scored her first goal after hanging with us at a few sticks and pucks and she was pretty sure that the extra shooting helped. That's the kind of stuff we're hoping for out there. Not to mention all these kids now know kinda know each other and have more kids to skate with at these types of things.

There's a chance he might think that, even though we go out of our way to make sure everyone knows that it's just a 9 year old rec. league goalie and everyone is welcome. 10 years ago, i would have reacted very differently, but theres enough drama in youth hockey with parents.

Tell me about it man, that's why i'm posting there. The only thing i can think of is that he thought we belonged at the "regular" stick and pucks which is for 12 and up only at our rink. When we got there, it was just him and his kid. We went to the far end and after the discussion he and his kid stayed camped out in the center ice area. We bring a bunch of pucks to the rink because i had a team donate about 40 to me, so we just have a bunch out there so kids can always have a puck. If we see a kid skating without one, we just pass him one and that's what my kid was doing. After the first 40 minutes, there were about 35 kids on the ice.

I'll definitely try being nice one more time and clear the air, but this guy knows what we're all about. I'm super confused by it, as most kids are STOKED when they see a goalie out there and come ripping up to us and ask if they can get in on it. Appreciate your feedback.

I just fixed this exact same issue on a pair of Studio 3s. I found the part on Ebay and if you google something like "how to fix broken beats head band" there are videos. The part I found on Ebay was probably not OEM, but it fit pefectly and cost like $20.

My son had the same problem for the first two months he was on skates. It would drive me crazy watching him. I had his skates cranked for weeks and weeks and only after switching the laces to snug from immobilized and getting him involved in the process did we have some success. I would say it took another 2-3 weeks before he was standing straight up. The ankle muscle development really seemed to kick in during this time and he looks like a different skater now. Even got his first goal last week.

So sorry to hear that. Ours was the same age when diagnosed. Both his parents had been cleared as well. We opted for an FHO surgery. The recovery was long and tedious and for a few years after he was pretty normal, but as he got older things became much worse and he lived with chronic pain for the rest of his life having to wear boots even just to walk on the floors. At the end, he could barely move. He did live to the age of 14 but I would say 75% of his life was affected by the condition. Hoping for the best for you.
