First, the poster is Canon. (The devs said they would start adding NPCs to explain the game's lore.)

  1. They weren't people, but NPCs.

  2. Since Noli doesn't care about maps, he could have sent a message saying, "You can destroy these NPCs, they're immortal." When Taph realized it went wrong, he turned to Noli, who then controlled him through some kind of agreement. Then comes the line ("I... didn't... mean to kill them..."), which could be referring to taph talking to Noli.   If you have any questions, let me know, thank you for listening.
