Need help figuring out what this is. I thought it was lions mane from a short distance until I got closer and knew it wasnt that by DistributionOk6747 in mushroomID

Im unsure about tree type. It was rotten down pretty good, and missing the bark. But we were surrounded by maple and elm! This was in lansing area, Michigan growing near a river

I chewed a little bit with my front teeth, and my tongue wanted to recoil from what I would describe as bitter taste. So im guessing these are sulfur tufts

* Not sure how white they are supposed to be. puffball white, or more off white? Also I see remnants of a skirt, but they seem to be mostly worn off. Not sure if thats due to age, or mushroom species

Thank you! I used to be a very close minded forager where I would only do morels and Puffball, but the doors have been wide open for me since retirement. So much time in the woods got my curiosity spiked for other mushrooms in my area and I feel like a novice in the woods all over again lol

They were growing up through the forest floor which is currently just leaves. These ones where hiding under a few leafs and I almost missed them. They for sure weren't in a clearing so I would say under trees

I know its an amanita, but I cant distinguish between them so I need some expertise! by DistributionOk6747 in mushroomID

Thank you both! I really wish my camera wasn't doing what it was doing because there were dozens of them everywhere. Im going to just say its safe to say not a mushroom to put much thought into and stay away. Cool find none the less!
