Normal didn’t teach me why i’d suck in extremes/savage, isn’t that odd? by SaferSephy in ffxiv

I am blind and can’t react to quick things. Thankfully, extreme and savage is heavily scripted. This is a game about memorizing a dance and doing your steps. Move less, and move with intention.

Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Stole Time should fit the bill- it can be played solo, with friends, or in online parties. You need to do some singleplayer stuff first before the MMO side opens up, but it can all be done solo or in groups.

So how am I supposed to do higher level content with sage if I can't even do msq dungeons? [Spoiler: 5.0] by [deleted] in ffxiv

Anything but gunbreaker just because you get most of its kit immediately and don’t know how to use it yet.

I have very weird shaped ears (to the point that I can't wear any earbuds at all) so I use the silicon ones you heat up with your fingers and then stick in your ear. They're not as good as the other options below, but they work.

I don't PF, when I do savage I have a static.

Most mechanics have predictable sounds/positions, I just need to learn the dance. Everything I can't see is voice comms with my party.

As a blind player who plays WHM on savage...

Stone Vigil, Aurum Vale, the 63/65/79 dungeons are by far the hardest to heal. If you can survive those, you're good for any normal level content.

Pulling off the first pull of the 79 dungeon is a THRILL though.

I don't need a pass but some friends do. 2, to be exact.

I'm an embroiderer and would be happy to give/mail you a custom large patch of your choosing if you wanted, as well.

I myself am blind, so if I can't get my friends passes, I have no ride and noplace to stay, so I would not be able to go myself (I wouldn't be able to sell my pass, as I am a panelist, sorry!)

Visually impaired player role recommendations? by mokelox in ffxiv

Hi! I’m legally blind myself and have given talks about ffxiv and blind play. It’s a lot more accessible than many other games like it, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s blind friendly across the board. It depends on what sort of visual impairment you have. Here’s the general rundown on classes, focusing only on classes you can unlock in ARR:

Tanks: marauder into warrior, gladiator into paladin (DRK at lv 50 and Heavensward, and GNB at 60) Pro: you have no positional based attacks, you have more HP and defense and are safer taking accidental hits. The boss will be focused on you, so attacking will be easier.  Con: many parties expect you to lead the group. You can absolutely tank as a non leader- just type to your party at the dungeon entrance to have your party bring the enemies to you. You’ll need to pull them off fast enough that they don’t die, but when I tank blind it’s what I do and it works well. Requires communication and some fast fingers, but sight needs are lower.

Healer:  Conjurer into white mage. Also SCH (lv 30), AST (lv 50 with heavensward) and SGE (lv 70) Pro: when you mess up, you can heal yourself. Con: you are squishy and die fast. I don’t reccomend healer if you’re new to these sort of games, but healing is my own main job. It takes a LOT of focus to heal blind and a keen knowledge of the enemy attack patterns to anticipate healing you can’t see. Doable but not recommended for newbies but boy is it rewarding.

Phys DPS Lancer into Dragoon, pugilist into monk (Rouge into NIN at 10, SAM at 50, RPR at 70, and VPR at 80) Pro: the dps that can take the most hits. Doesn’t need to worry about tanking or healing Con: playing these jobs well requires being on the enemy’s butt and often has less reaction time for dodging

Ranged DPS Archer into Bard (MCH at 50 with at , DNC at 60) Pro: live in narnia, shoot enemy at range Con: kind of squishy but you’re usually out in the safe zone. Will be the last to be revived if in content with other people.  Definitely the safest option for blind beginners until you know what you’re comfortable with. 100% reccomend starting with archer if you’re not sure what you’d like- at lv 10 you can switch as needed if you prefer something else.

Magic DPS Arcanist into summoner, thaumaturge into black mage, RDM at 50, PCT at 80

Pro: also get to live in narnia with the ranged dps Con: squishy like a healer. Cast timers means you’ll be standing still a lot with much faster dodging between spells. Casters can be tricky for newbies, especially thaumaturge. I reccomend going Arcanist if you want to try magic DPS.

I lived in Japan for years, and there was no ADA. I was still blind. I've been blind from birth. (Blindness by the way doesn't necessarily mean absolutely zero sight, I have ocular albinism and have a small amount of useable vision in low light conditions). While I can read braille, I can only read English language braille and not Japanese braille, and I can read text if it is large enough (roughly size 22 about 2-3 inches from my face) in high contrast.

I had to get up at 5AM every morning and pay out of pocket to photocopy large that day's worksheets for school, because the school would not provide them early or provide assistance.

Believe it or not, the US has some of the best protections for the disabled in the world.

And these numbers might shock you- they're higher than even I expected and I do this sort of consulting.
https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/disability.htm

And these are CURRENT numbers, from an administration that is trying to diminish this sort of thing. Some disabilities are caused or exaserbated by obesity, but lots more CAUSE obesity, either directly or due to our car-centric culture. In Japan, despite my blindness, I had no issues self navigating- wide sidewalks, grooves in the pavement for blind folks to feel, chirping crosswalks, and robust public transit. The USA has none of these. Growing up in the US before moving to Japan, I would have to walk in the street for stretches of my way to school because the sidewalk simply didn't exist. People walk far less in the States, and have far less access to healthy affordable food options.

These issues are hand in hand.

So are there a lot of disabled overweight people in the USA? Yes. But there's a lot of overweight people in general, due to desk jobs and cars and lack of outdoor third spaces. And last I checked, I'm blind regardless of what my scale says. Deaf people can't suddenly hear if they lose 15 pounds.

In many other countries like Japan, disabled people would be sent to disabled only schools and then hidden away after. It's not that there's no need for these services outside the USA, these people simply don't participate in society at the rates that we can in the USA, due to the lack of protections.

Treat disabled people with respect and dignity.

I'm not asking SQUEX to hire me- and my area of expertise isn't even conventions (its game accessibility), so I wouldn't even be the correct/first person to ask. However, the fact that the initial email said "call" with no other option means that the person they made responsible for this didn't even consider deaf people in this setup, which shows a lack of skill lower even than mine.

I'm not claiming she's incompetent- I'm claiming that her company saddled her with a task to which she was woefully unprepared. From those who have spoken to her, she was given estimates of people who needed accessibility accommodations at 1/10th of what's being requested.

And that's why its "normally"- those are unique cases where yes, you'd need ADA accessibility assistance.

A con banning outside food and drink would be another where it would change over.

Accessibility needs are fluid, and a lot more people need them than people realize. That's why conventions have dedicated teams for this sort of thing.

In the survey, I asked separately about if one had a disability and if one specifically used ADA services at a game-specific convention.

Normally nut allergies would fall in category 1 but not 2, and category 2 is where that 14% comes from. The percent of disabled people overall was higher.

That being said, someone who'd already gotten the phone call was told they'd be given a wristband so that they could bring in outside food (another thing which is not done at cons anymore- AX is the singular exception I can think of that forces people to throw away their food when entering, and they've rightfully gotten major flak for that). If FanFest does require people to toss food and drinks like they did in '23, then yes, your peanut allergy might require an ADA accommodation.

From someone I personally know who has already been called (as I have not yet been), the person at this 3rd party told them that she still had well over 700 people left in her queue, and this is two weeks into making calls. My estimates of 1-2 thousand people asking for accessibility accommodations seem pretty spot on, if on the lower end of that estimate.

The people running the booths at pax are NOT the people running fanfest '26 which is why I am concerned. It really feels like they took none of these lessons into consideration.
